UK, Ireland / What do Polish people think about Wales and Welsh people? [191]

How close is John Llewelyn's "How Green Was My Valley" to the real Wales??

How close is " A Tree grows in Brooklyn" to life in the New York these days????
Life in wales is fine these days as long as you avoid the forays from Harlech castle by roving bands of English knights and men at arms harrying the countryside............................

they say in welshpool your more likely to hear some one talking polish than talking welsh!

How can you tell? It all sounds like a cat coughing up a furball........apart from that ultra sonic screech of Polish women between words.....

UK, Ireland / How to recruit a Polish female for work in the UK? [11]

I'd hope and expect that it is illegal to advertise for a specific gender or nationality

Depends on context. Someone to help women in and out of their dresses and pin to adjust them could quite reasonably be expected to be another woman......well,thats what they told me when I applied for the Bra fitter job in Top Shop the other year.....

As to the "Polish",all he has to do is add the words "Polish language speaker prefered" and he's well within the law,its a "skill" not a "ethnic" thing that way :)

History / Pieces of Real Polish History [60]

Dont worry too much,a native english speaker can kind of figure out what you are trying to say but maybe it is slightly harder if english is a second tongue?

Put one on top of the other,like this;

History / What do Poles owe to Russians? [193]

its funny all this hot air. I know some 100% patriotic,if not outright nationalist Poles who, hate what the Soviets did but have studied in Russia, worked with Russians and dont have a bad word for any of them baring Putin et al.

News / For all Americans worried about Schengen in Poland, dont worry about it. [142]

It worked hand in hand. The Americans, the British and the Russians defeated Germany. Take away any one of us and it could have been very different.

Exactly.

What Patton said was correct. "While we are here, lets take what is left of the German Army and beat the crap out of the Russians." Too bad the idea wasn't well received. We collectively could have prevented decades of Soviet occupation of Poland.

It might have done, but, after 5 1/2 and 3 1/2 years fighting respectivly, and with the war in the Far East still far from one could it really be reasonable for the British and Americans to have taken on the might of the Red Army in 45? With hindsight we can all wring our hands but ,at the time, with real politik in play and a " Polish " government in place in Lublin/warsaw and the promise of free elections what other road could have been taken? The Red Army was in Berlin, they were not taking another step back.

A convenient place to store such a precious object without loosing it? Spoons had no hooks to hang at one's belt.

Its very handy place to keep it. The same place was used by members of Russian army during WW2,Ive personnaly spent 5 days at a time with one shoved down my sapogi and never lost one yet :)

History / The Greatest King of Poland? [117]

That's what I meant, you idiot!

Nah,face it BB, he got you there :)
I was tempted to bring up cassino......you know, a tiny force of falshies holed up for months against the might of the combined 5th and 8th armies, bombed to buggery by day and night air raids and assualted on dozens of occasions by men from so many countries it would make your nose bleed trying to remember them all.......but hey ho, again, twas the Poles who won that battle......

But,on a day long battle, yes, one small contingent of troopers can turn the tide and effectively "carry the day".

We feel that we liberated Europe

feel what you want, doesnt make it true though.
twas the soviets who crushed the nazis, and, short of Patton,no American wanted to go toe to toe with uncle Joe to actually liberate the parts of Europe that still needed liberating.

So,lets see, you are moaning about "English" and Poles for not feeling greatfull that your grandpappy "liberated Europe",well, lets see...

England was never occupied so didnt need liberating, and, well,Im sure I dont need to spell out when Polands occupation ended,so,I ask again, why should we be greatfull for something "you" didnt do?

as many are related to someone who died in battle in Europe

And those brave boys get our deepest respect.
Im sure you have been to as many US armed forces cemetries in Europe as I have and Im sure you can vouch for the fact that those American boys are being cared for with as much love and respect as though they were native born sons of whichever nation the have found eternal rest in.

History / The Greatest King of Poland? [117]

I love it when history becomes a fairy tale full of dragons, knights in shiny armour and evil villains. :D

mate, id just give them this one....a small force of mounted troops in the right place at the right time can topple empires........but I dont want to get all "classics" on you,Im sure Dessi can fill you in there :)

UK, Ireland / Polish burglars 'tied up pensioner and stripped her of jewellery before leaving her to die [28]

This doesn't reflect on the polish as a people. Just two stupid men.

Well,it wouldnt if there wasnt plenty of form with a certain sector of Polish sociaty, the type who at the mere sniff a house may have been pre war owned by jews(no matter how much of a p!ss poor shtetl hut it may have been) will be in there like sh!t through a goose with spades and metal detectors........so,Im sorry,in this case I suspect the fact that the victim was Jewish had a huge part in the crime being commited.

UK, Ireland / 4 teenage boys held in UK - murder of chef stabbed to death as he celebrated his 30th bday [24]

PP, the UK is ,well, pretty much the stereotype you may imagine in most places, but, its cities are just cities like any other.
Frankly,Ive worked in some pretty scary places but Ive not had a fight since I was a 15 year old school kid.......................mind you,see above story re the sort of mates I had ;)

One way to measure this is to take into acount that the British police are still only routinly armed with pepper spray and a stick, the other is to take a second to look at the Roll of Honour for all Officers killed on duty since 1980. RIP.
