Law / How can a Non-EU citizen extend a D Visa? [5]

Will my 90 days of tourist visa start after the expiration of my visa? Or do I have to exit Schengen and re-enter?

It'll start straight away upon expiry of the visa.

Life / $3,000-$4,000 a month - would we have enough money to live in Poland? [273]

Told you I have a balcony that I smoke on, well on that balcony is a shelf (will show a picture at the bottom) I decided I want to make that shelf my "Beverage Center" I have some more work to do but here is a pic what what it looks like so far. Still need to add the wine and more spirits but, it is starting to look better!

I wonder how long it'll be before someone steals all the alcohol from the balcony. Any bets, anyone?

Law / Establishing a Private College in Warsaw [6]

Funnily enough, despite cracking down, they've allowed all sorts of exams to be used as "proof" of language skills. I certainly don't think that the Cambridge exams are "secure" for instance, despite the claims made at the time.

News / Poland ready to receive Libyan refugees [159]

NATO shouldn't have gotten involved.

I'm getting more and more pissed off with NATO acting as some sort of police force - Kosovo was bad enough, but this is a Libyan civil war and nothing that NATO should be getting involved with.

The insurgents were already pushed to nearly being toppled. Ghaddafi would have played the people against them (he had already started). That's what was going on. Now it's a deadlock. Perpetual war.

And in terms of stability, no bad thing.

News / What are Poland's optimal both real and virtual neighbors? [81]

Wrong on both counts, there was a time when it was under Polish control so you can’t say Poland never did asserted its claim, as for the latter you speak for every person in Poland now. LOL

Most people in Poland couldn't care less about Kaliningrad.

Vilnius and L'viv, sure - but Kaliningrad?

As far as I can tell, the vast majority of Poles (even the PiS voting ones) only want the land that they had during the II RP back - nothing else.

History / Nowa Huta and other achievments of PRL (People's Republic of Poland) [79]

I think she meant 2,200 netto after taxes got taken away, so up to 3,000 brutto i'm guessin'. Still it's average or just below average, a woman in a good office job. How about some simple laborer or housekeeper they make much less than that.

Aha, yeah, it's possible. Usually in Europe (I have no idea about the US) - civil servants earn less, but they have great job security to make up for it. Still, the cost of living is really low in the East - even lower than in Ukraine.

Housekeepers actually do earn quite decent money here, because it's hard to find one that's reliable and trustworthy. Harry will know better than me, but I recall that a good housekeeper in Warsaw can earn a decent amount of cash.

Average wages in 2010

Something to bear in mind - in Poland, the black economy is huge. While that might be the "official" average wages, you'd be surprised as to the true extent of cash-in-hand work.

Urzad Gminy, she decided who gets money in her gmina for welfare also goes to places that have been let's say damaged by floods and decides if they get money for it. In her gmina in Podkarpackie that's how much they pay. Her husband works at a steel mill as a welder and makes like 1800zl. So it all depends on the job and what region you work in.

They're winding you up - a qualified welder in Poland is going to earn much more than 1800zl, especially in a place like that where qualified staff are very hard to come by. Heck, I was in Rzeszow not so long ago - and the place actually looks better than Szczecin and Bydgoszcz - neither of which are poor.

In fact - I was on the train to L'viv a few months ago. After Rzeszow, the landscape is full of new houses (actually - far more than even in Wielkopolskie) - where's the money coming from if the average wage is so low? But probably the best example of the lot is Medyka - many nice houses. Like Shegyni on the other side of the border (which also has very nice houses, untypical for rural Ukraine) - it's a guarantee that they were all built with black money.

It is a very common Polish trait to pretend to be earning far less than you actually do.

Love / British male with Polish background. Marriage in Poland. [12]

I read however that you 'applied' for your certificate of no impediment 3 months before the wedding, THEN waited 21 days, which ate in to your 3 months. Were you told this was the only way by the polish authorities??

That's how I did it - I was advised to do it like this to avoid any doubts at all.

For what it's worth, if you already live in the UK, then your local council can issue the document - no need to mess around with the British Embassy.

History / Nowa Huta and other achievments of PRL (People's Republic of Poland) [79]

In Lublin, in Podkarpackie, Podlaskie and many other provinces your 3403 is a dream for most people.

However, it's quite normal in places like Dolnoslask, Wielkopolska and so on.

My aunt a college educated woman who's been working for over 20 years in a good position, government job makes 2200 a month.

Can't be that good if she's only earning 2200 a month. I have a good idea as to the salaries in public institutions - and 2200zl is very much the kind of salary for a clerk who simply processes papers and doesn't have to make any decisions.

Work / How can Americans of Polish descent get work in Poland? [22]

Odds are that if him and his parents were both born in the USA, the grandparents would have been stripped of citizenship at some point.

Start a company.

It's the best and simplest way. There really is no need to mess around - 360zl a month for compulsory social taxes, 123zl a month for an accountant - job done.

Travel / Easter in Poznan. Will everything be closed? [14]

I am informed that there are English language services held at the cathedral in Poznan at weekends. Catholic service, of course.

It's only once a month.

There's also some random Christian church in Piatkowo that has weekly English services, but I know nothing about them apart from that they have some okay-to-talk-to volunteers.

Life / Reasons for moving to Poland [291]

I'm sorry but the health service here is absolutely shocking

No it's not. While it's underfunded, there are many, many excellent people within the service who are doing a great job with what they have - and Polish NFZ funded dentistry can be far superior to anything found in the UK.

Study / When will Polish schools start to recruit for September 2011? [23]

Actually, 1363.

Hang on.

I'm even more confused than ever. By reading this - does it confirm that it's perfectly possible for someone with a BA to start working in a school, with the CELTA?

I was always under the impression that it was obligatory for teachers to have an MA with an approved teacher training qualification/modules?

Study / When will Polish schools start to recruit for September 2011? [23]

I was wondering if anyone know when Polish schools start recruiting for for September 2011? There doesn't seem to be much around yet.

You do realise that the salary in a Polish school will be about 1100zl brutto for a teacher at the lowest rank?

As for international schools - forget it. Those jobs go only to those "in the know".

News / Poland ready to receive Libyan refugees [159]

lols, how many tens of thousands of Polish refugees scattered all round the world after '45?

Indeed, how many were taken in by the UK despite the country being financially ruined after WW2?

Travel / Help! Want to take the train from Warsaw to Amsterdam! [7]

From what I've been told, avoid the seats and couchettes - make sure to have a proper sleeping berth on the train. It's also apparently always delayed in Germany, so don't plan anything important for the day of arrival in Amsterdam.

Life / Are there ISP's who have a broadband speed of 25Mbps in Poland? [6]

I have a 25mbps conection, runs about 22mbps steadily and hits 25 in the early hours. Never goes below 20. But I have a cable connection, not copper.

The consultant told us we could get a speed of up to 25Mbps

"could" and "up to" seems to suggest that it's a potential maximum, rather than being the actual speed.

If UPC is using the old lines, then you really can't expect much from them.

Life / Does anyone know Hubert Anna Justyna (the painter)? [22]

I am when I see that picture ;)

I imagine if I put myself in his place now, I'd ride my horse to Słubice, I'd cross the bridge to Frankfurt (Oder) - and then probably get fined for riding a horse in the wrong place, or something. :(

Life / Does anyone know Hubert Anna Justyna (the painter)? [22]

well, if you say so... i'll paint you some pictures half price then....lol

I actually am starting to think about collecting Polish art. :)

I found something a while ago, but the painter seemed really uncertain about the price :(

News / Poland leads nations in raising 90 million euros for Belarus opposition [73]

It's quite possible - Russian security has been so incredibly beefed up, but Belarus has been pretty weak in terms of guarding against terrorism. What better than to strike terror not only into Russians, but also Russia's friends?

Poland (and Poles) presumably wouldn't get involved with such nonsense, while Russia would hardly take to bombing a vassal.

News / Who is "the enemy within" in Poland? [88]

You paying the maximum tax rate?? LOL

He's paying taxes, yes. Unlike you, who seems to spend his time in his bedroom ranting about conspiracy theories online.

What baloney. I've paid more taxes then you ever will.

Prove it.

We can get a moderator to compare your tax return with Jonny's. How about it?

You really do need to get out more - it seems that you have a serious case of paranoia if you think that we're all like you - a bum on welfare who leeches off the State.
