UK, Ireland / Websites for Poles to benefit from Britain! [210]

exceptions like Tony Benn as the highest example of a genuine leader

Yes. I'd also include Arthur Scargill in that. You may not agree with their politics, but it's hard to fault their dedication and honesty.

Perpetually living off benefits is an unsavory lifestyle choice for some people in this country of any nationality or ethnicity that I consider low-lifes.

It's the lowest common denominator - people who are happy with accepting tenth best as long as they don't have to make an effort.

News / Poland a top pot producer? Legalization? [30]

Churchill was also an alcoholic and chronic cigar smoker.

And for just over half of his lifetime pot was perfectly legal in the UK.

News / Damien Perquis Football player granted Polish citizenship insulted by the PIS ? [30]

I think you don't know much about Polish football and thus don't understand what he ment.

There is a wider issue, about language used in football and treatment of players (Posh Spice takes it up the whatever, throwing bananas, sectarianism etc) that means the issue must be dealt with before he is seen to be condoning the use of such language by fans.

News / Gap is setting up shop in Arkadia in Warsaw [20]

I agree. I remember when C&A first came to Warsaw and I kept seeing people turning up to things wearing near identical clothes. Not that cheap either.

At least Zara change their stock every month.

News / Poland a top pot producer? Legalization? [30]

Then not gangsters but the state will have revenues like from alcohol and tobacco.

“Marijuana is less harmful than alcohol and cigarettes…”

Do you agree with this line of reasoning?

Yes.

In any case, who the hell are the state to tell people what they can or can't put in their bodies.

One million Poles smoke pot once a week? 1/38th of the population?? I'd doubt that for starters.

Same here.

History / Do Poles really blame Britain for Poland becoming Communist after the war? [104]

PWEI , aka Harry , vel Davidson , attorney , whoever you are :

Now that's just paranoia!

I suggest you have a look at the link that is cited. It isn't pretty reading, but it is true.

Remember, the existence of Poles in (say) the Armia Krajowa doesn't rule out the existence of Poles in (say) the Armia Ludowa.

Travel / Swedish 19y male, Spontaneous visit to Warsaw, what to do? [10]

Meaning it was too hot?

Dramatically so, (this from someone who's almost addicted to the stuff) and no other discernible spice. I was with T (you know who I mean) and he had the same thing. The flesh was nearly coming off our bones. Maybe they were just having an off day in the kitchen since everything else about the place was OK. Good service.

Cracking little spot that!

Isn't it. Even if you stay sober, you still feel drunk after a few mins. If the OP's 19, he'll probably like Chinatown (behind the buildings opposite Sense)

That new one at the Nowy Swiat end of Foksal seems lively at the moment (the one with all the PRL kitsch) during the night - it usually gets some of the Piotrus crowd as well as the jeunesse doree. Don't know what it's like in cold weather though.

Get a curry at Namaste Clay Oven on ul Piwna.

I had a really bad curry there not long ago. I like chillies, spicy food etc, but that was just taking the p1ss. Not as bad as the Tandoori Palace, but still awful. Expensive too.

then carry on down Nowy Swiat and have a couple of cocktails at Sense before trying some of their 120 different types of vodka.

Great place. On the way back, Przekaski Zakaski is fun, especially in the middle of the night.

Law / Medical Malpractice in Poland - seeking accountability? [146]

It's a shame. I remember about 5 years ago the nurses in the Lodz voivodstwo weren't paid in the several months up to Christmas. They are dedicated professionals but they were living off donations put into collection buckets. No wonder the nurses strike was so big.

Law / Medical Malpractice in Poland - seeking accountability? [146]

It is not today`s Poland, doctors make salaries 15000 -30000 zł a month . They really don`t need your gifts .

A friend who's a doctor complains about all the extra work he has to do. He's a specialist and from his main job in a state hospital makes less than 3000zl.

Why the lies, polonmed/Moania? Are you incapable of being truthful?

Real Estate / Demand for apartments low in Poland's main cities [89]

tripled in many places over a three year period.

examples of prices 'tripling' then this 'bubble' bursting, please.

prices out there are very stable or actually going up

In some parts of Poland this is certainly happening.

hwikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_prop...

Is it just me or is the style of writing on that wiki page somehow familiar.

Law / What are chances for Poland to join in Eurasian Economic Community? [100]

Just from time to time Russians and Poles complicated to each others

That's certainly one way of putting it.

Now its time that Poland and Russia settle their account and learn to live in peace thru cooperation

The people of Poland voted to join the EU instead.

Language / Intensive English Language Courses in Poland? [44]

JonnyM - you are of course biased, because you may have seen cases from Berlitz that have been negative.

No bias at all, just sound judgement based on a professional assessment of their methodology, knowledge of their 'business practices' and yes, having seen many many 'cases' of people who've done courses there and subsequently gone to more effective training providers.

The OP wants the course in Krakow.

@Gazzaroon, what is your own experience of Berlitz?

Language / Intensive English Language Courses in Poland? [44]

Slightly amusing but untrue. In my case I'm making my money far from Poland, in a market that Berlitz can't compete in, so I'm unbiased.

Trust me, Berlitz are a company to avoid. Great at selling, nice glossy adverts (paid for indirectly by the customer), but the (grossly overpriced) product just doesn't cut it.

Real Estate / Who designs houses in Poland? [66]

Whomever designed this really didn't like windows and it's 490,000zl in a reasonably modest size town!

Foul isn't it. There are 'houses' like these all over Poland - real eyesores. And they don't even have the good grace to build them from shoddy materials so they'll fall down eventually.

Language / Intensive English Language Courses in Poland? [44]

Why can't we major on the student

Exactly - rather than a slickly marketed inflexible method taught by barely trained individuals.

our prejudice?

In my case it's my professional opinion.

Language / Intensive English Language Courses in Poland? [44]

However, in my view, why not try them to see if it works for them? Good idea.

Yes. Tried and tested, recruits well and, unlike Berlitz, respected.

Language / Intensive English Language Courses in Poland? [44]

Berlitz was overly commercial in Japan. Some schools can't hide their rampant capitalism.

They've been like that pretty well since day one.

Richfilth's idea might be a good one for the OP, or speak to International House who tend to have good teachers.

Language / Intensive English Language Courses in Poland? [44]

I teach English and I have learned that one method doesn't fit everyone and so adapt to the student and their way of learning.

This is the problem with Berlitz - it doesn't adapt to anything. Basically it's about marketing and has been for years.

Language / Intensive English Language Courses in Poland? [44]

Don't touch Berlitz. They have slick marketing, but a Nineteenth Century method. A good language trainer will use elements from diffrerent methodologies for sound reasons. Not just one. and an old one at that.
