News / Warsaw is the natural capital of Europe, not Brussels [67]

Suburbs are rather bedrooms for Warsaw.

that's why we call the "bedroom communities" ;)

People would be better off taking the WKD commuter train, 40 minutes and you are guaranteed to be in the city centre on time but then what do you need your SUV for? ;-)

Ah the troubles of modernity :)

Life / Mental health problem or one of the grieving stages? Death and denial in Poland. [93]

Rybnik, yes she still refuses 100%, no chance. Her typical response is "What for?"
Llamatic, thanks and yes it is still going on and worsening if you observe her carefully. About 2 weeks ago she used a sentence which I misheard and so I thought for a moment she had suddenly snapped out of it. When I asked her to repeat what she had said I then realised what she had meant and that she was indeed still unwell.

Is her work suffering? Do you know any of her co-workers? Is she still paying attention to her appearance? How about where she lives? Watch for signs of further detioration....

I have noticed having seen her last week and today that she has less and less grasp of time. I am also noticing she is forgetting a few more things that have happened to her previously

These symptoms are very troubling indeed. I am not a psychiatrist but this sounds like depression. Is she still resistant to seeing a doctor?

USA, Canada / Going back to the Old Country of Poland after more than 25 years! (from USA) [249]

There was a club right on the Rynek Główny in Kraków back in 1978-79. It was the only one. Does anyone remember the name?

my cousin wrote this in a recent e-mail:"czym chata bogata tym rada". What does it mean?

There is a thread dedicated to translations. Use it!

History / What was it like in 1989+ in Poland when the Soviet house of cards fell? [237]

Do you remember how much for one dollar? Bananas! You are spot on. Bananas, oranges, forget about it. That must've been a sight to see citrus and tropical fruits in the stores. Back in my day it was solely bruised apples. That's it. (strawberries in the summer).

I don't recall the country rioting during hyperinflation(pls correct me if I'm wrong) so what was the reaction from the people? How was it explained/presented to the people? Who was the "communicator" in this regard?(not J Urban right?)

Not many cared.Poles were travelling freely to West Berlin months before Berlin wall came down and during this period East Germans were escaping to West Germany thru Poland.

How and why would they do that?

"Commies" were never ousted

Did

Challengers to what?

Did he have any political challengers or was he just "decried President for life"?
I touch a nerve?

I think you are expecting too much from him Iron. They ("westerners") were (are) being feed with propaganda and they simply have no clue

History / What was it like in 1989+ in Poland when the Soviet house of cards fell? [237]

I have all but forgotten the silly money. And yes, I lived in Poland at the time. All I can recall is getting 200 000 zł for 60 minutes of teaching English - I have no idea how much anything in the shops cost, or what the average salary was. Nothing. Honestly

How long did this period of "silly money" last? When did it begin?

In 1994 milk cost was 5500 PLZ

what does the "PLZ" stand for?

I remember my rent was 1 million in the old zloty. The same year it went down to 100 zloty.

what year, more or less, was this? what accounted for the sudden drop?

So far so good. Maaarysia, special thanks for y3)our post. That was a nice synopsis.
I have some questions.
1) what was the mood like when the Berlin wall came down? what were some of the immediate predictions?
2) What became of the commie rulers immediately after the communist collapse? What ever became of the cretin Jerzy Urban?
3) what was done with the big companies like Ursus and Polski Len?
4) how was private property reassigned? what did one have to do to reclaim land, buildings, homes, etc?
