History / Kaczynski's Legacy [88]

that can be easily done at the moment If only local authorities do the right jo

You know nothing Jon Snow.
It's not being done right though, because of the central government doesn't allow feck all to be done. It's typical Polish bureaucracy. The Bureaucratic processes here need an overhaul. Poland continues to be left behind because trying to get anything done here takes an eon. Even someone like you must agree with that.

Wow man, I'm not even a Pole and I know more about how your country is run.

albeit it in a "camouflaged" way.

I wouldn't mind if Silesia became part of Germany to be frank. Better roads/infrastructure etc and there wouldn't be so much effin dog-sh!te everywhere.

Easier language to learn too.

But its obviously nonsense, I know loads of RAS supports here and none of them feel "German".
I would fully support Silesia becoming a federal Polish state though. Don't see the advantage of Warsaw dictating how Silesian tax money is spent.

Sure, tis well-known that Silesia is the richest region in Poland, but the place is kind of a kip coz of its mismanagement over the years.

Finally Katowice is getting a much needed facelift, but most of the other surrounding cities are dumps - Zabrze, Chorzow, Ruda Slaska etc.
Of the lot only Gliwice, Zory Tychy are decent. Kato is much improved though in the last few years, long may it continue.

I'd rather my kids used their imagination and watched cartoons like Samuri Jack or Batman that muck like BP.

in ur opinion should they later and watch war/ horror movies

Certainly not the shaggin news anyway.
Why are they even watchin tv, they should be playing at that age :P

Work / Dental Student moving with wife to Poland, how difficult will it be for her (IT degree) to find employment? [10]

There's a good few IT companies around Krakow, (I don't really know Poznan that well) but it would be risky for her to move here w/o having a job already tied up.....and w/o Polish it might be extremely difficult to find a job in that field.

I work for one of them and a huge amount of the Polish workers already speak great English or German and a few other less popular languages, so she'd be at a disadvantage having only one language y'know.....then again, you didn't say if she speaks more than one, so I'm guessing here.

However, if she took a few months of Polish lessons first it would help, or maybe she could teach some English for a year or two. The money won't be great, but at least it would push her to learn the lingo and then get back into IT.

Love / Asking her family for permission to propose to my Polish girlfriend? [28]

"doubling the odds against "

hahaha ;)

I guess you wanna stay single bud

Oh to be single again...altho not married, in a very very long term-er.
I wish I'd moved here at 18, full of life and with a full head of hair. If only I'd known Poland had to most beautiful women....but no, one dziołcha had to capture me before we moved here ;)

Love / Asking her family for permission to propose to my Polish girlfriend? [28]

I doubt very much they taught you about polish family traditions and culture, or did they?

Place didn't even come up in my geography classes coz you were still behind the Iron Curtain then.
As far as our geography lessons were concerned Poland was part of the USSR.

Thankfully things have changed since then.

Didn't do WWII either, my syllabus allowed us to choose. I did WWI instead. Bit more interesting and far easier to learn about. I was only thinking about getting a better grade I hope you understand.

Anyway, back on topic.
Where did OP go?

I understand what Landora is saying about it being sexist.

I'm all for equal opportunities, I think women should have to ask their future mother-in-law if the men have to ask their future father-in-law :P

Evens up the playing field..............or else just don't bother at all. I think most people would prefer that option.

I am open minded

That's your opinion.

unless you experienced these times or have grown up in a Polish household you will never quite understand Poland and her people

Passive aggressive much?
Ah so unless you lived during WWII or the French Revolution you can't have an opinion on it. Oh, OK, sorry, I should have known that.

How silly of me for daring to have an opinion. I promise I won't do it again.

Ask her, not her daddy

+1

Another good post by dominic as well.

Travel / Gdansk - long weekend, what to do? [3]

Hop on a local train and head to Sopot, that's where all the partying happens at night, it's only about 10-15 mins away form Gdansk.

Gdansk can get pretty quiet at night so it's best to head out there. Loads of pubs/restaurants out there, and head down to the beach and there should be a few beach parties on too.

News / Palikot - too liberal/modern for Poland? [197]

Tell me this one lads,

How long have I got to live in Poland before I can vote?
I can vote in local elections and EU, but what about national ones?

Or do you have to be a Polish citizen?

As I already speak basic Swedish this would not be a problem, as for learning the language of ones future wife that's a no-brainer.

Ah but w/o Japanese & Finnish you're in trouble :P

Smurf, its funny how things change with time eh

Wow, just wow.
You must lead an incredibly busy life ;)
Trawling for a post I made just shy of exactly 3 years ago.
I suppose you've never changed your mind in your life.

'supposed to' is quite different that have to, but since moving here I've noticed that it's not required at all.

thank you but our plan is to get married in Poland and live in Poland in the future

Fair play so, best of luck.
You'll need the lingo so, wouldn't move here without it if I was you.....and don't come in winter, 5 months of snow will break your heart. Summer's awesome though.

do you consider it normal to marry a woman from another country without accepting her culture, traditions and language. david_91 has obviously put the ground work in & wants to be informed on the etiquette.

Etiquette that he does not in any way need to follow.

So, let's say you meet a Swedish/Finnish/Japanese chick, fall in love with her in Poland you'd learn her lingo just to ask her Dad 1 question?

No you wouldn't.

Learn Polish

Yea, that's smart. An English guy who has no plans to move here.

*slow clap

Don't bother Dave, why bother doing something that only conservative country bumpkins do here? Whenever I hear of people doing it I always laugh that they must be afraid of the future father/mother in law.

You don't live here, neither does she. Why bow to Polish tradition when you both live and, probably plan to stay, in the UK.

From my group of Polish mates here only one of them did it, it's gone, the vast majority don't bother with it anymore.

Love / Girlfriend visiting Poland without me concerns [7]

Wouldn't worry too much about it lad,

most Polish males live with their parents until they're in their late 20s, early 30.

The only place they can have sex is in cars, forests or bus shelters, so tell her to avoid them and she'll be fine ;)

News / "Shale Gas Revolution" will make Poland a Leading Country in Europe! [202]

Watch the documentary Gaslands.
Shows the horror of shale gas.

Say hello Shale Gas, say goodbye the the Water Table beneath and it's not long before our drinking water and our rivers, streams and lochs are destroyed and the life in them killed.

Life / An Englishman wanting to watch TV in Poland [51]

Harry7, if you subscribe to UPC, they have the fastest Internet bwt, they have toa fair few English language channels.
They are no extra cost too, just when you select the channel you need to hit the 'info' button and change language to English.

A few diff BBC channels, a few sports channels, all the documentary channels, some american Fox channel, music channels. It's not many (about 20-30) HBO is available too, but I don't know how much, I usually just stream their stuff from the Net anyway.

Also, if you get the Internet, get yourself an IP proxy, I use this one [overplay.net] it's only about $5 a month
You can change your IP address to a UK one and then you can watch things like BBC player, 4OD, ITV match streaming etc.

There's a handy Irish website too, called aertv.ie, so use Overplay to change your IP to an Irish one and they also stream a good few Irish and UK channels, BBC3, 4, etc

For skysports, just use, thefirstrow.eu

Life / Are Polish people brave or scared? [32]

The Turks and the Greeks know how to riot thats for sure, we should all be a little in awe of them.

I find it heartening that people are standing up to the govt.
I saw it here too when the protests again ACTA were in full force.
Wonderful stuff.
I really hope the protestors in Turkey get their way, their PM is a proper nutjob.

if that's what the majority

Hold your horses there chap, just coz the majority of the Sejm idiots want it doesn't mean jack sh!t.
To find out if the people want it we'd need a referendum or something similar.

Work / English speaking tradesmen in Poland [8]

Hows your time in Poland been smurf? Been there long?

Near 4 years lad.
I'd move back to Ireland tomorrow if I'd the chance. But no point, I know there's no work at home.

Better craic at home, pubs here are sh!te, everyone sits. There's dogsh!t everywhere here and I mean everywhere. People take moaning here to a new level. I thought Ireland was bad, but f@ck me, complaining is a national sport here....they even complain about air pressure. WTF!

Food is grand, women are gorgeous, beer is great, weather is good except for winter (-33 last winter) People are friendly, but only after you get to know them (strange), otherwise people don't really like or engage with strangers and are not that helpful.... although to be fair, younger people are, older people are mostly a**holes, stuck in their ways and angry with the world, they seem to think they are owed something by society (can't lose their communism ideals). Racism is huge, way, way worse than in Ireland......towards anyone that doesn't look European that is.

Wonderful countryside and wildlife/hiking stuff/boating/mountains etc if you're into it. People tend to be pretty conservative too, which is weird coz the ruling party are pretty liberal. I'd say Poland will be one of the last EU countries to allow gay marriage for example.....but they do have a transsexual in the parliament.

Football is popular, but there's no point in going to a match coz of the huge hooligan problem. Volleyball is popular too, but that's a stupid 'sport'

Music-wise/gig-wise, Poland isn't a great destination for touring bands..... it's OK, but they don't get anything like the concerts that Ireland or the UK can have.

Reading back over that it looks like I don't like living in Poland.......It's OK, but it's not the best place I've lived. I just got lucky here with a good job, awesome missus and a few good mates.

I suppose man, if you were offered a gig in a mine, it must be in SIlesia?
