But there is - at least regarding the south of the country! Both events - acquiring Silesia and loosing the Lvov region by Poland - occured precisely in 1945 and were decided on the same conference. What is more to that, the reverse events - (legally) loosing Silesia and (legally and practically) acquiring the Red Ruthenia by Poland - also occured roughly at the same time, that is in the first half of the 14th century.

I should bring your attention to the fact that Germany's claim to Silesia would be even more dubious. All subsequent rulers of Silesian lands after Poland's Mieszko I (before 963 to 992) came into possessing them in a legitimate way until the times of Frederick the Great of Prussia who mercilessly conquered almost all of Silesia on the Austrians in 1741. The famous battle of Leuthen (Lutynia) west of Breslau (Wrocław) was brilliantly fought by Friderick. And as a result - after Silesia was taken away from Vienna by force - Maria Theresa of Austria had to live through sleepless nights to the very end of her days - such big was her dispair and sorrow after loosing Silesia, the jewel crown of her empire. I am sure that if Maria Theresa could have been re-incarnated these days, she would have told the Germans to **** off, prefering Silesia to be Polish rather than German (Prussian).

So, having such a tremendous, be it only imaginary, support of the last really legitimate ruler of Silesia (Maria Theresa was Queen of Bohemia), Poland's claim to Silesia is much much more justified than Germany's, my dear TheOther.


With this I may only agree. Just as Germany accepts the Oder-Neisse line as its present western border, the people of Poland should accept its present Bug border with the eastern neighbours.

It is an archaism meaning 'prepare', but only in the sense of food processing, so it meant 'to brew' as well as 'to cook'.

That's a very interesting problem which once upon a time Poland had been faced, too. In the 18th century the country consisting of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lituania (united together in the Act of Union of Lublin in 1569) gradually started to be known as "Poland". The people living in those coutries started to be called "Polish" in the broad political sense. While the Lithuanians or Ruthenians could specify their ethnic identity more precisely, this was not possible for the Polish people "proper". So the new term "Crowner" [Koroniarz] had to be coined for them and the Kingdom (of Poland) started to be referred to as "the Crown" as opposed to the "Grand Duchy" inhabited by the Lithuanians.

Terms describing someone as "natione polonus gente ruthenus origine judaeus" were commonly created at that time.

Notice, however, that similarly to the British and Irish governments, the use of political terms such as "British Isles" was avoided; the term "Poland" was never officialy applied to the whole Polish-Lithuanian entity. Even after 1791 when the country became unitary, the term "Both Nations" began to be incorporated in the names of central offices ("Komisja Policji Obojga Narodów", for example)

Britain is simply in decline. As every empire in this world, it has a phase of development, its peak and then a phase of decline. People start to be naive in the phase of decline and so are the British people (Rotherham scandal). People start to make wrong choices in the phase of decline and so do the British (Brexit decision). I am surprised that you don't put a comma in places where it is badly needed. On the other hand, you seem to be well aware that a comma should be inserted before a conjunction introducing the subordinate clause in Polish:

It may be confusing, so it is the context that should clear that confusion.

The Past Perfect tense (czas zaprzeszły) disappeared completely from Polish some time ago, although you can still find it in literature:
"Gdybym był miał czas, mógłbym był ci pomóc" - is the literal translation of your English sentence 3 which would set your conditional into the past in Polish. Some people would have still said it this way before the WW II and even more people would have done that before the WW I.

You are right here. When you read Polly's ranting on political and economic matters, you quickly discover his language is exactly the language of commie propaganda. I think he would make an excellent author for speeches by comrade Lenin, for example, or other Soviet or Polish comrades. Change the names in Polly's message and you would get a typical commie speech performed by comrade Wiesław (Władysław Gomułka) on the 1st of May having the Palace of Culture in the background. I did read this article and it is clear that neither politics nor religion make people choose one country over another. Money make most of them move at first, but later on there comes the question of integration. The main barrier against intergration is naturally the language. Once this barrier is overcome, there come other factors you take into account.

The main factor I would call "civility". That is hard to define precisely, but I am sure that there is a big difference in "civility" between Poland and Ireland or in a broader sense between Eastern and Western Europe. One Russian spy once put it very bluntly in a conversation with a Polish spy: In Russia as well is in Poland there live cattle stock. The true civility begins in Germany ("U was w Polsce jak i u nas w Rosji mieszka bydło. Prawdziwa kultura zaczyna się od Niemiec" - that was in the early 1990s, so I hope we have gained some more civility in Poland since then :-).

I also heard a story from a Polish psychologist who lived in France. Although she said the French seemed superiour and "venomous" towards the Polish immigrants there, she also said it was much easier for a child from Poland to integrate to a primary school in the so-called West than vice versa.
