Travel / Poland - never again [593]

how the f*** can anyone prove from a distance that he speaks a language with the Google translator being as good as it, in fact, is?

see that's the point google translate isn't that good (it's amazing for what it can do but it has serious limits). a person using google translate to imitate a real Polish speaker will be found it very quickly since it would produce the kind of very unidiomatic phrases... you have.

How allowing the foreign, unemplyable, and hateful scum into, say, Sweden makes any anyone there better off. I just don't get it.

There are people who make massive bank from government contracts to provide housing and other services (not to mention documented links between ngos and human smugglers).

The entire world economy is one big grift aimed at milking the people keeping the whole crooked mess afloat.

Collapse (or enhanced enforcement) will not be pretty.

son of a well known scientist, with a degree from a Polish university who doesn't speak Polish

Son of a communist party member, no way did MM do that stuff without being a member in good standing (or major connections to those who were)

The guy left in bloody '66!

No. No he didn't. There is no Rich Mazur who left Poland in 1966 and then came back to harangue emergency room workers or invade elementary schools.

It's a troll, not sure which one (since I don't keep track) but he displays almost no knowledge or Polish language and culture. Agreeing or arguing with him is about as productive as putting mud in a frying pan for breakfast.

Life / I'm British in Poland and I think that it's time to go back to the UK! [240]

If people in Poland get offended by a direct ty, they must have some deeper unresolved mental issues.

And you're obviously not Polish. Politeness in Poland is about maintaining the proper distance. Using ty with someone you don't know is like hugging someone you don't know in America, an invasion of personal space.

So.... how did you manage to leave Poland in 1966?

English is so common in Poland among the 30 and under that I would default to English and I was never disappointed

I'm very skeptical about that.... to the extent that it's true it's a sign you're being treated as an outsider.

I already said that this would never happen.

What would it take for you to stay away from this forum too?

the emergency health care for foreign tourists

Poland doesn't live up to your standards, szkoda, people here will try to survive (and hope you never darken an airport lobby here again).

Law / Poland's citizenship through grandmother in US [20]

, but what knowledge do these fourth generation types have of Poland? Zero.

To be clear, I'm completely fine with people with extremely distant Polish ancestory moving to and living and working in Poland (and learning the language and how things work) in order to get citizenship, but just wanting a passport/ticket to Western Europe? No.... they can go chase a cat.

Law / Poland's citizenship through grandmother in US [20]

What would be any other reason to claim citizenship of a country

that they have no intention of ever actually living in? that's the giveaway.... rather than live in Poland and get citizenship that way they want to head straight to greener pastures, Poland is better off without them

The American grafitti by the gangs is better because it serves a specific purpose of letting the competing gangs

animals marking their territory (half a step up from urinating) i hope they kill each other completely (and not any civilians)

Poles just picked it up because it was American.... empty copying.

Life / Is it safe for Indians, Sikhs living here in Poland? Any Temple / Gurudwara in Wroclaw? [159]

to be fair, the massive religious intolerance and unremitting violence against anyone who isn't a sunni muslim is a relatively recent development, probably related to saudi influence after the grand mosque seisure (the most important historical event no one remembers) and the subsequent sunni convergence into intolerant religious fundamentalism

I remember an interview with a Pakistani man who said when he was a child (60s maybe early 70s) he and his friends played soccer and openly drank water during the day during ramadan and no one cared, whereas now it would start a riot or three

Food / Name of a Popular Food Program (Show) in Poland? [9]

Gessler never busted her ass in a kitchen

A couple of years ago there was an interview in Polityka (or Newsweek) with someone (about political changes in general) who said the show was the best exploration of Polish management-labor relations ever and that anyone who wants to understand what's going on in Poland should watch it.

He made a good case of clueless owners who have no coherent plans (beyond easy money) and don't know who to manage (beyond yelling and blaming employees for not following orders that weren't given) and who do anything to try to not pay employees. He also praised her ability to bring the sides together. I made a good faith effort to watch it then but.... couldn't get past her, cause I cannot deal with her at. all. ever.

I'm sorry your trip wasn't pleasant, I'll note that

grafitti - is of course an American invention and I hate it but at least in Poland it's not gang related

restrooms - ime free public toilets are not the rule in the US either outside of institutions and public places like malls

emergency healthcare - you were totally unprepared for a medical emergency and you're surprised things didn't go smoothly?

Now I think the whole purpose of your trip was to have a miserable time and even though it took some doing - whining about pay toilets you managed it. Congratulations!

Study / West Pomeranian University of Technology, Szczecin - Good or Bad?! [5]

Merħba!

I don't know that institution but Polish universities usually don't teach in English. For Erasmus type people either they have a few special courses taught in English especially for them (and maybe local students if they're interested) or they set them up with faculty to do individual work.

Academic Polish is too hard to learn in the few months before you'll be here but you should learn some survival Polish before arriving (note: Polish and Maltese share the letter ż but it's pronounced like the French j in Polish). Typically Erasmus type students socialize more with each other than with locals.

Which semester? The Polish academic year is very weird, the fist semester is from the beginning of October to the end of January (meaning you stay over for the holidays or go home and come back again for a few weeks...) and the second runs from late February to late June (no summer semester).

UK, Ireland / Letter from Polish Prosecutor??!! [34]

how can i go to court without ever being charged with anything?

Yes, I doubt if a phone call is sufficient grounds for requiring someone to be in court.

This has scam written all over it (as did the original phone call)

Life / Mothers day in Poland [19]

Mothers Day in Poland is celebrated on May 26th.

Barely, it's nowhere near as big a deal as in the US, it's more like Secretary's Day or something.

Work / Job offer in Lodz, gross 1000€/4260PLN. Apartment and healthcare paid for. Good in Poland? [46]

SOME will even slaugther the animal in front of you

What scenario do you have in mind?

buyer: "I'll have that pig!"
farmer: "Sure thing boss!"
pig: "SHREEEEEEEEEeeeeeeee..... gurgle gurgle.....gurg."

It takes a lot of time and effort to turn a live farm animal (even a chicken) into food. A pig takes several people most of the day and there's no way they're going to kill one in order to sell a kilo of schabowy to some out of town rando...

Yes, people with contacts to a person who's going to slaughter an animal anyway can 'order' or buy after the fact (or help with the tedious work in actually butchering and receive a portion that way) but as a piece of advice for a foreigner mentioning that is worse than useless.

Work / Job offer in Lodz, gross 1000€/4260PLN. Apartment and healthcare paid for. Good in Poland? [46]

are thee any food stores that have meat which is not injected with water?

Avoid buying pre-packaged meat in supermarkets. Buy from smaller neighborhood butcher shops, the quality is better (though beef will be harder to get, it's not a traditional staple in Poland). You'll need some Polish to shop in them and establish yourself as a known quantity, a customer they like and want to keep (try a few and then stick to one or two mainstays). The supermarkets are easier but the quality of meat tends to be worse (Tesco is the worst ime, Lidl maybe the least bad).

News / EU confirms it will take action against Poland over court reforms [554]

Yes, there was no excuse for him to not swear in the three that were legtimately chosen by the previous government. It's fine and dandy to want to change the constitution but you need to follow the constitution that you have before you change it.

(I think the extra two were a trap set by PO to get JK to overstep and he walked right into it).

Classifieds / Translate from Polish to American English/or to Polish [8]

. In DCU, Dublin we have an MA in Poetry Studies and in the UK there are definitely MAs in creative writing in either prose or poetry.

Well an MA is also a degree so I was confused... Don't think that exists in the US it would usually, I think, be a degree in English (BA MA or PhD) with a concentration or specialization in poetry or creative writing or whatnot...

In terms of standards, I wasn't referring to institutional and/or bureaucratic stuff (I will say I've turned down work where they want something official sounding for the UK because I don't know British institutional terminology well enough) I was referring to what used to be called educated speech (the everyday language of native speakers with some post-secondary education).

Yes, you're right that the idea of translating documents into "Australian" might be kind of ridiculous, but I was referring to what might be called 'expressive usage' where more than the grammar and plain semantics are important.

Regarding Australia, what was the thing you watched?

A tv series, I mentioned the name in the post (in parentheses), kind of a dry comedy *** drama (or drama *** dry comedy).

Classifieds / Translate from Polish to American English/or to Polish [8]

A degree in literature with a Masters in Poetry is possible though

don't you mean a degree in literature with a concentration (or specialization) in poetry?

Standard English in Australia is British English.

really? the latest thing I've watched from Australia (please like me) didn't really sound slangy or British to me...

and I'd say lots of things can't be translated very effectively into in any kind of neutral English, things like comedy for example. A translation of Miś that would work for a British audience might leave an American audience cold (and vice versa or course)
