Real Estate / Cousin stole my dads home in Poland... [49]

The location of the house is heart of Warsaw centre..I would fight tooth and nail for that money thats worth probably over 10/15 mil PLN

The OP says home rather than house and "across from the Palace of Culture" which suggests a fairly modest flat.

I think it would be very very difficult to do anything at this late stage and expensive in terms of legal bills. The OP should be aware that court cases in Poland tend to drag on for years, often with very little effect except making lawyers rich. I'm personally aware of two wills that were challenged. In one case the parties concerned agreed to set it aside to avoid going through a long and expensive legal process: in the other case the will was written so unambiguously and professionally that there was nothing the aggrieved parties could do.

UK, Ireland / Warsaw to UK flights? [10]

two on the arrivals level (at the far left as you face the doors out of the building).

That's probably why I didn't notice them.

Personally I'll be sorry to see the old terminal go, I like it quite a bit.

Same here.

UK, Ireland / Warsaw to UK flights? [10]

The changes are part of the preparations to close zone A,B of Terminal A. Work on the old part of the building with a distinctive, claret roof is due to start in September. The old terminal will be integrated with the new part of the building (zone C,D,E) to form a single, architecturally and functionally coherent structure."

Drat. As of last week the only bank machines were in that part. Let's hope they've got their act together to put one in the new bit, though frankly they may well not have. Also the waiting time to go through security was much quicker if you walked through to the old bit.

News / Romney visits Poland: Gets support from Lech Walesa? [29]

Indeed. I've got a lot of great respect for Wałęsa's actions during that time - he did what was best for Poland, rather than for his personal glory.

Exactly. Most of the posters here are a long long way from Warsaw so don't get to see the Solidarność people marching through the streets demanding all sorts of things, usually opposing privatization or relaxation of employment red tape.

Life / Why are Polish so conservative and religious? [240]

When will Poland become a liberal secular country ?

It is already. Poland has a centuries' old liberal tradition and there is absolute freedom of religion. regular churchgoers are in a minority, even according to the Church's own statistics. You shouldn't judge a country only by its villagers.

News / Warsaw Modlin Airport is finally moving [29]

Friends were charged 150zł for the taxi drive

That's actually about the right amount - most people using the airport get the fast train to Nowy Dwor and the shuttle bus from their to the airport. I agree with you about Wizzair; it isn't that cheap and the hidden extras add up. I'd add that rather than looking on the LOT website, try the BA website - they have the same tickets for usually less money.

I recently travelled from Warsaw to Yorkshire. I checked out Wizzair from Modlin to Doncaster, but given all the extras it actually worked out cheaper flying with BA to Heathrow and travelling by train. First class from Kings Cross to Doncaster even, because I booked in advance from their website.

News / Romney visits Poland: Gets support from Lech Walesa? [29]

most of American electorate don’t even know who Walesa is

A good percentage of the ones with Polish roots do, even if they haven't a clue how he's seen n Poland.

Personally I think he's a good guy and the allegations of collaboration are a fabrication by his enemies.

Life / Individualism in Polish culture...Is it almost Nonexistant? [170]

ah yes, it naturally boils down to this in most threads.

Certainly in this one, Fuzzy, being a thread started by someone from the US but concerning Poland. Quite a relevant contrast too, since quite a few of the American posters in the thread have talked about personal freedom.

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Poland comes 22nd out of 27 member states.

To put it in perspective, that group of 27 countries is the richest and most highly developed region of our planet.

News / Romney visits Poland: Gets support from Lech Walesa? [29]

Am I reading this right? That Lech Walesa supports Mitt Romney? Is Poland generally critical of Obama?

I shouldn't think most people have a strong opinion about Obama. After all, he's a foreign politician who isn't especially controversial outside his own country. In Poland, people love talking about politics however I don't remember hearing anyone express a view about him even at election time.

As for Wałęsa, he'll meet just about anybody now he's retired. Especially if they make a donation.

Life / Individualism in Polish culture...Is it almost Nonexistant? [170]

Very true. One contrast between the USA and Poland in all this is the police department websites that exist in some parts of America showing people's photos, addresses etc. even if they're only accused of something and havent been found guilty and the anonymity in Poland where the media don't even report people's surnames after theyve been convicted of something. Two extremes really, but I prefer the latter.

Love / Please help in this long distance relationship (I live in Canada, she is in Poland) [12]

Would it be completely stupid to defer my year of school and go to be with her

Yes. You've never even met her, can only guess what she's actually like (and you may be unpleasantly surprised) and even if you had met this person (are you even 100% sure she's female?) allowing a teenage crush to interfe with your studies is a very very bad idea.

You say you may regret it if you don't meet. I say you will regret it more if you do.

Real Estate / Credit secured against the land in Poland I wish to purchase. [5]

There still seems to be credit attached to the land, with two payment deadlines, both past. You'd have to look a bit further (it gives the index number of the documents) to know if the credit has been satisfied and if so, have the charge on the land removed from the documents.the fact that there is still a charge suggests that there is still outstanding credit. You need to consult a lawyer.

Best to avoid OLT given their problems. There are still good deals via the BA website.

Life / Calendar of Polish Name Days [36]

Google ''saints' days''. Not unusual to Poland; around half of Europe and Latin America celebrate people's name day.

As for the water, it's a hangover from a pre Christian fertility tradition. Very similar to various traditions in the UK and elsewhere. Not strictly legal in Poland if the victim is unwilling: every year there are arrests for public order offences.

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

If there were no fully-fledged offensive by either French force or Britain navy and air force or both, then we cannot agree as to definitions of help and military action.

There was such an offensive, and Germany was beaten on 2 fronts. France was hors de combat however the USSR joined the allies. They liberated Poland too. The US was also involved, in exchange for help against Japan. We know how the story turns out and you know that the treaty was fulfilled.

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

In September 1939?

With what? Do you really think that was feasible? Or even desirable.

The UK declared a war on the Axis and fought it with tremendous loss of life. What more do you want?

Edit. I'll answer the question for you. You want someone else to blame for Poland's shortcomings...

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

Really? Is that why you point-blank refuse to ever go into detail about the aid which it was within Britain's power to give to Poland in September 1939 but which was not given?

Exactly. Much easier to moan about betrayal than analyse what was achievable at the time. No other country did more for Poalnd than Britain - there should be a bit more gratitude floating round this thread.

Law / Worked for a restaurant in Poland and the owner refused to pay me. [60]

If you have a proper contract 'Umowa o Pracy' you should be able to go to the Labour Court (Sąd Pracy). They a usually very quick and effective. If for some reason they really can't help you they'll tell you, however if you have a contract for 1500 and that contract is a legal one the employer has to be able to prove he paid that much via a bank transfer until the contract was ended.. For the part that was under the table, nobody can help you.

UK, Ireland / And you wonder why there is Anti-Polish feeling in the UK [187]

Yes actually. Macmillan was wrong on that and many other matters. No country helped Poland as much as Britain during that time even defying the American allies who refused to assist the uprising. And since EU entry no country has received so many migrant Poles or treated them so well.

And there isn't much anti-Polish feeling in the UK either, given the sheer numbers who arrived in such a short period.

Given the likelihood of a low take-up rate, you should probably use all of them.

UK, Ireland / And you wonder why there is Anti-Polish feeling in the UK [187]

Given that so many Poles came and of those who came, a high proportion were small-town and rural jobless it is a credit to them that the problems aren't bigger. I agree with one thing though, they aren't picked on.
