UK, Ireland / I worry about the Poles working in the UK [77]

Like most other societies.

Link? :)

If the point of this thread is that the OP's opinion is that the far right is rising in Europe and immigrants will get the blame first and we can expect a rise in xenophobic attacks or at least tabloids reports of attacks turning them into race attacks. he might have a point.

I've fought, I've been stabbed, was it a race attack?, was it in the news? no, would it have been if I were living in a country where people buy newspapers that sell such dribble? maybe.

What goes for 'journalism' in tabloids is nothing short of fear mongering, just look at how many dailymail articles are quoted in this forum, if that doesn't tell you everything, then I give up (NEVER;)

But through all this fake 'worry' blaming people on being racist and generally slagging people off, is anything to go by, then I am not sure what the point of this thread is?

Real Estate / Poland Housing prices in July 2010 [129]

actual floor area is somewhere in the region of 160m2, excluding 12m2 balcony and an external storage shed + 2 parking spaces.

What no swimming pool? ;)

I take it all back, chips are more expensive.

Lake views, by any chance?

120m2 for 300,000PLN.

That's cheap as chips.

How many bedrooms was that?

Fair play.

Well if you make money

Could you not afford that?
Not even a good one double bedroom apartment at 50 metres square?
That'd work out at 31250 Euro (@4zloty to 1 Euro).
Do you work at all?

News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

This name is derived from Ruś Czerwona (Red Ruthenia), not from Russia (Rosja):

Ha! Thanks, I always thought it was like Russian style pierogi, what about Chicken Kiev? :)

Polonia / MOVING MY STUFF TO MOSCOW and a Harley motorcycle ...any ideas? [58]

I'd assume that it would be cheaper to either bring your vehicle on the train or sell it here and buy another there, as you would have to fart about with re-registering it maybe a MOT test? and petrol costs etc...

Just a thought, as I read that you are looking for an inexpensive way, although really I'd love to drive to Moscow.

Life / A frozen then burst pipe in Poland - what to do. [18]

Polish houses have water tanks? or do they operate without.

I have never seen a water tank in the attic here in Poland.
Some boilers have water tanks but that is heated water, the pressure comes from the mains, not from gravity of having a tank in the attic, with the complementary dead pigeons in it, or if you are real posh dead rat.

I still find it difficult to drink water from the bathroom tap but here there is no open tank, so it doesn't matter.

I met

I am sick of people on here, who live in Poland, have facts to back up their arguments and have met people involved in the business here.

I prefer Milky's opinion instead.

Law / Any good business ideas - what Poland needs? [114]

I'm told that the magic number for starting a business in Poland is the 200,000zl figure.

Talk about pulling a figure out of the air.

It depends on what business it is, you can't just make up a figure and call it a magic number, unless you are Paul Daniels.

Any good business ideas for Poland?

I would like to see lots of remote controlled bells.
basically a bell that would ring if you pushed a remote controlled button.
You could put the button in your wallet or as an application to your mobile phone and attach the electronical bell to your keys, so you wouldn't lose them.

When I was a kid we had a whistle operated bell that you attached to your keys, so if you whistled the bell would ring and you could find them. (where are they now? the market was obviously limited to those that could whistle but why should I have to pay for lazy kids in the playground? :)

Also you could attach the button to the T.V. and the bell to the T.V. remote control, so when you lose your remote you can push the button on the T.V. to find it.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

not as much as in the rest of the country if my memory doesn't fail me,

I thought it was colder up there and therefore snowed more, the Baltic can hardly keep a temperate climate, isn't it too small?

where're Darius and Fuzzy when you need them :)

I am thinking of giving up teaching and starting my own beauty salon

I don't think anybody has thought of that before in Poland ;)

Another one, while I am at it, is the sign for 'Buty', you'd think you could go in and make a buty call, well you can't.

So I have been told. :p

that is not a bad idea at all and I can see that the Krakow mayor is a smart man.

One of the main differences between Ireland and Poland, is Polish people complain, this forces mayors to react.

Love / How to ask the Polish parents for her hand in Marriage? [32]

It is a big step in a person's life,a life long commitment is scary, it is natural to over analyse in this exciting time, everyone does. Just think of your love.

The main issue is how to deal with the mother-in-law asking for money from you, all I can say is be polite and don't give her any.

It's easier for me to type than you to do, I know but it is the only fair thing to do.

And you're not living together, the mum has a nice big house and savings, so it doesn't sound like the mother is in that bad of situation.

How short is short? Like, 15 minutes?

I would say less, wear a suit, meet her, give her flowers and chocolates, let her open them and have a few and ask.
Then say that you are so happy you want to tell your fiancée immediately and run like the wind :)

You know I try to avoid staging things too much, in my life anyway, it never happens the way I play it in my head.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

As you probably know, Polish women like to have their nails and eyebrows done

When I came here first I kept seeing big signs with "Tipsy" on them, that's false advertising :)
I also think 'manicure' is misleading, girliecure would be more appropriate.

Szczecin is not a city very familiar with snow.

Does it not snow there every winter?

The city mayor gave a couple of days off to people who park downtown - so they don't have to pay, which was a nice thing to do considering the situation.

When the first major snow feel in Krakow, the snow ploughs couldn't get through the traffic and had to have police escorts, so the mayor made all public transport free, to encourage people not to drive.

Love / How to ask the Polish parents for her hand in Marriage? [32]

Congratulations!

I've heard that for the Polish, it's a cultural norm that the man asks the father for his daughter's hand in Marriage.

It is kind of old fashioned and up to the individual but I consider it proper form and I would ask the head of the family, in this case it sounds like the mother.

This makes me slightly ill. But I'm not marrying Mama.

Agreed, I think ever family has their skeletons and negative aspect.

Anyway, I expect that I really do need to ask her mother before I propose. How should I do this?

Dress nicely, bring flowers and chocolates (sweeten the deal) and ask.
Then ask her what kind of dowry she's willing to throw in for you, whatever she says double it :)

I want to survive this conversation without her issuing ridiculous threats or ultimatums, to which I simply cannot and will not bow down.

This is a bit vague, ridiculous threats? you are not going to live in the same house are you?
And why the hell would you be ruled by your mother-in-law? perhaps you are just nervous and thinking of the worst case scenario? although I would be wary of the mother asking for money in the future.

What do you think I should say, and what do you think would work best for a woman with her mom's personality?

Throw in a bottle of wine, make it short and sweet.

I also want to counter any threats or unpleasant suggestions with my superior manners, strength, breeding.

Again you are not being clear, what threats?

Mama (and for that matter, psycho sister) are nervous that my beloved will be "leaving home" to join my family.

Could it be possible that you are over analysing?

Food / Why carp for Polish Christmas? [157]

Then on the 23rd, I'll put my wife, my mother-in-law and a carp... in a car and drive back to the Netherlands to celebrate Christmas over here, together with my mother.

Do you put it in living or dead? the carp, not your mother-in-law.

stilton, soaked for two weeks in red port.

Do you prepare it in any other way, baking etc?
Sounds delicious, wow my mouth is actually watering thinking of it.

Love / Concerns about Polish Family / Child Support Law [68]

Am I going a bit lala here or does anyone else think this thread is a bit woo woo

I assumed that the guy has got a bird knocked up and this is his cover story.
But then again I have a very suspicious mind when it comes to such threads, it's the whole issue of trust.

Travel / In Poland, Can I cash an American Check? [14]

I cashed a check from Ireland here in Poland about 9 years ago and it took three and a half months to clear and I had to have an account.

The system here really just jumped the whole check thing and went straight in to cards and internet banking.

I don't know if anything has changed since.

USA, Canada / Expat Poles swearing allegiance to the US - how did you feel? [157]

all the atheist and agnostic nutters have been trying to have the 'under God' removed from the pledge.

You mean to restore the original Pledge of Allegiance before the religious nuts changed it

News / John Godson, born in Nigeria, might become Poland Sejm's first black deputy! [313]

Who are you guys to say others shouldn't have an opinion?

Show me where I said you shouldn't have an opinion, I didn't but you did say races should not Mate or breed.

Classic double standard over here

Classic twisting of words.

Them damn drunken Leprechauns. :p

Stronger words have been used in this context for Irish immigrants, in the States too.

Don't let this happen to Poland.

You seem to have no contact with Poland whatsoever, as it is apparent you know nothing about Poland. Yet you talk down a guy who was democratically elected and then true Polish wizardry got in to the Sejm (which I don't even understand but he must have got votes at some stage otherwise he wouldn't be there).

Why would you not try and learn about Poland instead of telling us what you think is happening?

This how they teach American history over there? Lol.

You should see the photos that come with it in the school books :)

News / John Godson, born in Nigeria, might become Poland Sejm's first black deputy! [313]

Mating and breeding ... This goes for other races too. Everyone should stay with their own kind.

Who are you to say who people shouldn't have sex with?

Haven't you folks learned anything from being overrun by Muslims and others in the UK?

Others = Irish, yes I have learned a lot thanks.

keep him out of the Sejm.

Good job you aren't dictator of Poland but just a foreign fool on a forum.

News / John Godson, born in Nigeria, might become Poland Sejm's first black deputy! [313]

They see that they are criminal scum and get pissed for the scummy ones giving them all a bad name, as folks tend to lump them all together.

I thought the best explanation of this was Chris Rock's - Black People Vs Niggaz
(contains strong language)
...

I cringe when I meet another Irishman who is complete scum, cringe factor 100.

I myself take much issue with blacks and don't think the races should mix, ... my black neighbor with whom we borrow yard tool back and forth and enjoy a beer and a cigar together from time to time.I've never called him a n*gger nor have I tried to lynch him. As well as the good Rightie black politicians I support...

Hypocrite :)

What do you actually mean by ''don't think the races should mix''?
Segregation? Shouldn't live in the same countries? Shouldn't mix drinks?

I have been to different countries in Africa and the majority of people I met were fine and some great.

I would be more against scumbags of any nationality, colour or creed than anything else.
