Language / Czech language sounds like baby talk to most Poles. Similarities? [222]

Just Polish people I talked to.

So, instead of seeing it for yourself (which you didn't), you chose to believe anecdotal evidence?

Czechs do however have long memories of how Poland invaded their country more than once in recent history.

I also talked to a Brazilian girl who used to live in Prague and had the misfortune of having a "Russian look" and working as a waitress. The stay in Prague was very traumatic for her. In the end she got beaten up by a security guard for no reason and decided to leave Czech Republic.

Again, anecdotal evidence.

I just had one day of a recreational stay in Czech Republic

One day is hardly long enough to form a valid opinion, especially as they would know you weren't Polish.

For what it's worth, I found Czechs to be exceptionally patient when trying to bridge the Polish-Czech language barrier.

And then many come to Czech republic and are shocked to discover that Czechs are actually not as friendly or worse, they are very rude towards Poles.

How many times have you been there, seeing as you don't actually speak Polish very well - how would you know how Czechs behave?

Language / Ukrainian language similar to Polish? [236]

this must be a recent development since all of the inhabitants had to speak Russian - I guess it is political.

I think it's a problem with the younger generation (maybe late 20's at most) - as they never really had much contact with Russian.

Apparently, you'll often find older Balts struggling to understand each other rather than simply using Russian.

They usually speak with their fists, no? ;)

Good question, though. I know that in Belarus, a lot of the top guys don't speak the language.

Belgium? ;-)

Not a chance, even their King doesn't speak Dutch! ;)

What about Polish Silesia where a Silesian speaks pure Polish outdoor and pure Silesian indoor? ;) What about Beskyd highlander who speaks pure Czech at work, pure Polish after crossing the border with Poland, and his local lingo while drinking beer with neighbours?

Well - I was thinking more in terms of the whole country, as opposed to parts of it.

All of the inhabitans of former USSR are bilingual.

What's interesting is when you look at the Polish/Russian minority in Lithuania - some of them are genuinely unable to use anything but their own tounge.

Law / Your experience as a foreigner running a small business in Poland [43]

I'd actually say that family members can be terrible in Poland - I heard about one guy who trusted his wife's father with some building investments. Unsurprisingly, her father made a complete mess of it - he had no experience in this sort of thing, nor with that sort of money.

I'd say that it takes a year just to learn who you can trust and who you can't - especially as in Poland, a nice image is no guarantee of quality. I know of several useless accountants who speak English and charge fairly high prices for basic work - yet mine, who has a small office in the middle of the osiedle, is fantastic. Looking at the place, you'd never consider it to be of high quality - but the service is second to none. She also practices a very 'safety-first' attitude with taxes - never deducting anything questionable without checking it out first.

Delph, I assume your accountant is English-speaking, right?

Actually, no - but my wife uses the same accountant for her business, so there's no real need for me to have an English speaking one for mine. But if I was to do anything more complicated than English teaching, I'd be looking for someone who really knew what they were talking about.

Without a background, how are you going to do any market research? Advertise, promote effectively? (Unless you're thinking of eg IT outsourcing where your market's not local anyway).

I'd say that without a local background, it's almost certain that the locals will take advantage. Even little things such as accountancy fees - I know someone who was paying nearly 2000zl a month for something that should have cost about 500zl a month!

Law / Your experience as a foreigner running a small business in Poland [43]

For those who have businesses, would u strongly recommend learning the ropes of the country first, and only then go into business?

Strongly so. Poland is a very specific place - and if you don't know how people are thinking, they'll take advantage of you. A good example - people will simply often refuse to pay, or lie outright about why they haven't paid. They'll also convince you that you don't actually need a contract - or often refuse to sign one.

If there is no reasonable work or employment to be had, then the only option is to create work by creating a business, regardless of whether one is familiar to the country.

And that will almost certainly result in ruin. Poland isn't a place for those who need a safety net - if you get into a financial mess, they'll come for you quickly. With the lack of options, you can easily find yourself in a financial mess with no means to get out of it.

Life / The day Poland ran out of artists. [40]

The most impressive Polish Work of art is of course the Crazy Horse Monument by Korczak Ziółkowski.

Of course, he wasn't born in Poland and never lived in Poland.

I've watched your painting and sorry but they're seems to be pretty amateur to judge it fair.

His channel is fantastic - paintings (Hitler loved to paint), busty blondes (again, Germans love this) and Nazism (German again).

Language / Ukrainian language similar to Polish? [236]

I see no difference between Ukrainian and Russian. These languages are different and some people may believe these are similar to each other. They are not.

They're definitely not similar at all.

Still, one thing that amazes me about Ukraine is the level of bilingualism - isn't it unique in Europe to have so many people able to use both languages interchangably?

There's some very interesting art from the 1970's in the National Museum in Wroclaw - it seems that this period actually produced some interesting stuff. I don't know much about it, but it's intriguing.

You should start a thread on the Polish antifascist movement

You mean the movement that is full of spoiled rich kids pretending to be anarchists?

Personally, I'd rather Poland does what it takes to win.

Didn't you learn anything from your time in the American forces?

History / What was it like in 1989+ in Poland when the Soviet house of cards fell? [237]

2. Possibility of blood revenge on Polish Commies - Commies would have to fight to death if their lives were in danger.

This is what amazes me - somehow, everyone got together and managed to prevent bloodshed. It could have easily turned out like in Romania - certainly, 1989 was Poland's finest hour in a long time.

It seems to me that the people screaming about the Round Table and subsequent events are the ones who weren't there.

Life / How many Jewish people live in Poland? [145]

Sorry, hon, to burst your bubble but majority of Poles today don't give a flying-you- know-what about Jews one way or the other.

You're right, a majority really couldn't care less.

It's only a small vocal minority that scream and yell about Jews - and thankfully, that minority will never again win any sort of power.

Seeing antisemitism in Poland is just a hobby of couple of bored out of their minds foreigners living in Poland.

Come on, you know fine that it exists. But it's no worse than in any other European country - when the most shocking thing is the vandalism of a couple of graves, you know things aren't bad.

Most of it is just talk, nothing else.

History / What do Poles owe to Russians? [193]

Correct. In earlier times though Jews kept to themselves because people disliked them.

This "dislike" only really came about during the wave of nationalism that swept Europe in the 1920's/1930's. Before that? Nothing.

Poland should rightfully be proud of the way that her people were incredibly tolerant towards others up until the 1920's - and even today, when Poland still has a relatively open door for many other cultures to come.

He was 1/4 Jewish im not sure what the smaller groups of people he mentioned though.

Plenty of Poles have Jewish blood, too. Centuries of intermixing would tend to do that to a race.

News / For all Americans worried about Schengen in Poland, dont worry about it. [142]

As for Americans giving damn or not, I don't care, as long as USA demand visas from Poles, Poland should demand visas from Americans - simple!

They'd have to leave Schengen as a result.

Do you really want to go back to the days of 3-4 hour queues on the borders in summer?

Still, they should toughen up the long term (3 months +) rules for Americans - in fact, make it virtually impossible for them to obtain residency.

The Polish government can buy me a ticket back to the good ol USA.

You do realise that Poland doesn't buy any tickets? You don't have the cash, you sit in a Polish jail. I'm sure, with your macho claims of streetfighting, that you'd be eaten alive in a Polish jail. Then again, your imagination would probably have you winning against the whole prison.

One catch, permanent residence for me is but a document away as I am married to a Pole and have been for 14 years.

Fantasising again?

Thanks to the cordial invitation of your government, I can stay in the UK for 6 months solid and I have friends in the UK.

Quite a few Americans find themselves refused entry if it's ascertained that their sole aim is to stay in Europe for as long as possible.

And the rest of Europe is just an expensive ****hole clowntown.

Aw, can't afford it on your welfare checks?

So, no, Americans dont worry about Schengen. It is a ridiculous idea. The EU is a ridiculous idea. Look at it. Every bleeding country needs a bailout.

That's okay, we quite enjoy the EU here. You only hate it because they don't welcome fat, bald Americans who fantasise about how they get involved in street fights with Polish guys.

Life / How many Jewish people live in Poland? [145]

particularly the late Jan Paweł, who bucked the Polish trend towards anti-semitism.

Indeed, his clear rejection of it, combined with some personal acts were something that every Pole should try and emulate.

The fact that he asked the Jews for forgiveness (without them asking for it, something that anti-semitic Poles use as justification for not forgiving) says it all.

It seems a shame that a minority of Poles seem hell-bent on ruining his legacy.

What Poland did there ?

Poles murdered Jews and Ukrainians for the crime of being Jewish/Ukrainian civilians.

Law / Can I travel to other EU countries with my Polish Karta Pobytu? [19]

do i can travelling for another country member in Union Europa like France or Germany or Italy without any problem.

Yep.

The Karta Pobytu effectively acts as a 3 month tourist visa in other EU countries.

However, not all countries accept this - best practice is to stay within the Schengen zone.

Yes.

Lies.

From your profile -

Znasz j. polski? a bit

"A bit" hardly counts as "speaking Polish".

You seem to be making the typical foreigner mistake of believing everything that Polish people tell you.

For what it's worth, the Czechs say the same thing about the Poles.

I don't know if Europe will be stunned but Polish artists might be.

Why should they be?

Good on Poland for playing by everyone else's rules and choosing someone who might win, rather than a no-name Polish artist with no hope whatsoever.

Life / How many Jewish people live in Poland? [145]

. Any Jedwabne, pogroms, real or imaginary, put all together pale to the terror, torture, and executions of Poles at the hands of Jewish prosecutors and judges. This deserves its own thread.

Remind me, since when did the Catholic religion practice revenge as a principle?

Anyway, what was Poland's excuse in Lwów?

And please, don't forget, that many Poles supported such "Jewish terror".

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Nobody knows how long Polish teachers will keep their priviliges.

You know, I like PO in general, but their work with education - well, the current minister is...I can't even begin to comment.

The plans for the Matura to have several subjects cut (including Philosophy!?!) is just... I can't even begin to talk about the stupidity of it. It seems to me that they really have absolutely no idea what they're doing - and that's with really passive teaching unions who are quite happy to accept changes.

You're a star, thank you :)

What's surprising to me is that the Polish system pays extra for overtime - the UK system is very much "you've got extra lessons, deal with it" :)

USA, Canada / Polish-Americans as seen in the false mirror. Type A and Type B. [141]

I speak for myself on this forum not for Poland, nor have I ever claimed otherwise.

Right. That's why you harp on constantly about being Polish-American, as if it's something superior.

I side with Piłsudski and not with Dmowski when evaluating the 2nd Republic and I have never made a racist comment on this forum.

Do you?

So, you approve of Piłsudski's concept of emcompassing many people within the Polish state? You approve of Poland being home to essentially anyone who wants a home, regardless of ethnic origin? Riiiight. Your comments about Germans says quite the opposite.

You on the otherhand have made racist remarks about the impurity of Polish-American blood and were suspended yesterday for so doing

Would you like the history lesson about Poland now, or after?

Ask yourself about the purity of people such as Mickiewicz, Pilsudski, et al - and you might just learn why Polish-American blood is highly unlikely to be 100% Polish, especially as many of them came from the desperately poor Eastern borderlands.
