News / Nergal should rip up Koran - Wałęsa [11]

Headlines are of necessity clipped

Not that much.

A cornerstone of journalism

Another cornerstone is to make the headline match the sense of the article.

News / 2012 - 2013 Will be the most severe Polish winter. [38]

It's impossible to give accurate long range forecasts and official Polish ones tend to be less accurate than most. Though the feeling is that it will be a hard one. As usual a wretched February, but this time colder than usual.

News / Kudos to RCC for turning Poland into a laughingstock... again. [38]

That depends if all you see is the partying, or the real meaning of Samhain/Dziady, when the veil between life and death is drawn aside, as it is this and every year by millions of Poles flocking to graveyards to honour the spirits of their ancestors.

Actually not that much of an import. Most of Europe has celebrations around this time that pre-date christianity and which will probably survive it. Dziady, still celebrated by some in the kresy is a good example.

Law / Real wages drop in Poland [28]

There's certainly a gap between income levels in large cities and in the sticks. However even small town teachers can do (and usually do) quite well from privates.

Another factor is that in cities with a large corporate presence, more training its done in-company which usually pays more, not to mention that companies often feel direct with the trainer rather than through a middleman.

Law / Real wages drop in Poland [28]

There's the key. You claim to have asked 50 people their salary, now you're looking on search engines.

It's probably passed you by that in Warsaw most people who teach in-company don't have a 'job' as such - they do work for more than one contractor and usually directly. And certainly don't work for 3500.

Law / Real wages drop in Poland [28]

You go round asking people how much they earn?

I can't imagine anyone who's a teacher in Warsaw doing it for less than 5000 net.

Law / Real wages drop in Poland [28]

Let's consider that you have no idea what I actually do :) Here's a hint - it's not "TEFL".

And even then it's inaccurate - I was teaching EFL in Warsaw over a decade ago and getting more than double that.

Life / Catholic "Telewizja Trwam" from Poland - your thoughts? [98]

Why won't Rydzyk reveal the letter from the authorities that state the reasons for refusal? Why?

Whats interesting is that these idiots don't even realise that nothing has changed for Trwam, they can still broadcast freely on cable and satellite, just like now.

This pretty well sums it all up.

They are subject to the same regulations about financial disclosure as other applicants. What certain posters here who bleat about Trwam avoid saying is why they think it should be a special case.

Travel / Is there a healthy expats scene in Poland? (drinks, food, golf, etc.) [143]

Agreed. By spending too much time in those expat places he would miss so much. Not sure about the service thing though - they give bad service to Poles too. A lot of it is because many waiters here aren't actually waiters, just students, usually from out of town. At a restaurant recently I asked one whether the chips were real or frozen. She replied "Frozen of course. What other kind are there?".

Service though is slowly getting better.

Law / Lloyds TSB International rejects Polish residents [8]

So, you really don't know that a bank should put full and truthful eligibility requirements on its account information?

The law's the law and a website's just a website. It wouldn't be the first time one country's regulatory rules are in conflict with a company's policy.

I really don't know why you'd bother posting about it. Either open the account from a UK address or use another bank - there are plenty to choose from.

Travel / Fastest way to get from Warsaw Airport to Lodz central on Monday at noon. [42]

I see what you mean and agree 100%.

From Modlin the train is hopeless unless you arrive at exactly the right time. To Lodz from Warsaw and then to the airport by taxi is easy.

From Lodz to Modlin, the train from Centralny is probably a good bet.

The best option is to pay 50 quid more for the flight and go on LOT, Heathrow to Okecie!

Food / Polish roast pigeon anyone? [17]

You do realise that the edible ones are woodpigeons from the countryside rather than urban rats with wings?

More meat on that kind too.

UK, Ireland / Do the poles like British culture [127]

Actually modern European democracy did emerge in the UK - the Reform Act and the widening of the franchise are the key elements. And bloodless too.

Maybe worth mentioning some British guys with big ideas over in the colonies too.

Find Simon Schama's history of britain to find out just how bloody our past is. It's excellent. Well worth watching.

Exactly. The country where modern democracy emerged, where Capitalism and Socialism were formed and where the basics of cultural and societal valued have evolved over centuries. I haven't seen the TV version, but Schama's bookis excellent.

They burn parts of London. They kill some people and steal some stuff.

You must have read the same 'history' book as Magdalena. The Tyler/Simnel revolt was part of a greater movement with uprisings in most major cities and decades of conflict!

UK, Ireland / Do the poles like British culture [127]

A war between different factions of the aristocracy more than a revolution. Yeah, it created a hiccup of sorts but within several years the king had been reinstated etc.

That's certainly an interesting interpretation, though rather wide of the mark. More than just 'a hiccup of sorts'!

Rich people squabbling with other rich people over the throne of England.

Again a misinterpretation. Try not to confuse English history with Polish history, which has been centuries of the rich squabbling over the rich - indeed that could be a good title of a book about the First Republic.

There was little violence

You think that's a bad thing? Certainly a contrast to the failed Coup d'état in Warsaw in the same period. Some of the longer term benefits of the General Strike affect your life now.

Google the English Civil War and the Glorious Revolution. You might also like to go a bit further back and look at the Peasants' Revolt. Of fast forward to the Twentieth Century and checkout the General Strike.
