Life / Will Polish people be accepting that im only half polish? [63]

Sir, The reason i want to come to Poland is because Canada is getting to Multicultural

As I said - stay in Canada, we don't need any more half-literate racists - we only just got rid of a lot of them!

Poles are very interested in the Polish expat community and even half-Poles. You'll be quite popular, especially among the ladies.

Hahaha, perhaps he'll be popular with Magda from the village (who doesn't speak a word of English) - but with anyone worth knowing - they'll shun a Canadian racist. I can tell you that from all my female friends, none of them would give the time of day to such a person.

I suspect his real reason for wanting to escape to a country he has no real connection with is a bit more complicated.

There's probably nothing for him there - hence the racism.

History / Polabia back to Slavs? [113]

Very sad. As Santayana said, "those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it".

It's a big problem right now with the teaching of modern history in Polish schools - the PRL is almost totally ignored, due to the idiotic way that history is taught. Yay for obscure 11th century kings, boo to something that the kids can relate to!

UK, Ireland / Is UK the new cradle of antipolonism? [161]

The largest anti-polonism i've heard was from the jewish/israeli expat community. Many have not lived among or met Poles, yet are fiercely hateful of Poles and anything Polish. They teach this hate from generation to generation. It's really shocking.

I imagine it was all in your head.

Incidentally, hatred for Jewish people is passed from generation to generation too. We even have several examples on this very website.

News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

the issue was 1. mistrust of Jews - it was not that obvious Jews were working for a better Poland for everyone 2. economical advantage that Jews had ('wasze ulice, nasze kamienice')

That's pretty much how I understand it too - given the wave of hate towards the Jewish people at the time, it's really no surprise that people would've believed the propaganda that Jews weren't interested in Poland. I suppose they didn't really help themselves by keeping themselves to themselves too - that would've undeniably aroused suspicion in such a hostile climate.

I wouldn't like such a situation in Poland

I dunno, you see some very strange stuff coming out of the Polish courts too, and no Jews in sight (as far as I know?).

ever heard that universities have certain capacities of how many people they can teach? - if you are letting more Jews you are letting less Poles pretty simple

All Polish citizens at the end of the day though - and in times when emigration between countries (except to the US) was pretty difficult.

An interesting sidenote - I believe that access to education in the II RP was based more on ability to pay than anything else? I don't recall where I read it, but it seems that one of the successes of the Communists was to introduce comprehensive education for all - as previously, there was no great tradition in Poland of free education. I seem to also recall that the Jesuits had a stranglehold on a lot of education - though the details escape me.

Fascism.

What I don't understand is why certain Poles seem to deny it so much - I mean, why? The rest of Europe has admitted it and moved on - heck, even Britain fully admits what Mosley was upto.

They were Polish though - as citizens of Poland, what would it matter if they were Jewish, Ukrainian, Polish, Kashubian, Lemko, whatever? As long as they were Polish citizens and working to better Poland - what's the issue? After all - I thought Poland was dead against such manipulation of university entry - hence the massive criticism of peasants getting into universities ahead of the educated classes post-WW2.

Is there really such a thing as "too many educated people" in a country? Come on, gumishu - you and I both know that it was just a typical post-Pilsudski policy. But - I stress - Poland was hardly unique.

do you think there have never been Jew/Black quotas in british schools and universities? A hell of alot more recently than pre war
Hard to get a view from your big horse I suppose.

Who said anything about Britain

History / Polabia back to Slavs? [113]

in essence this actually like my English - they learn Gaelic as a foreign language and use it as such (save for people from a couple of more traditional regions)

Pretty much, although Hiberno-English (the name for their version of English :P) is heavily influenced by Irish - although to what extent they're aware of this is debatable ;)

Still, the political leaders are all able to speak in Irish, as can the President - and most people, even if they don't speak as such, are perfectly able to follow Irish news or to watch something on the national Irish-language TV channel. Quite a lot of them will use Irish names too - I have a friend who switched from her "English" name to her Irish name.

btw. numerus clausus is not a complete ban (someone mentioned here that at the same time some American universities (private) were not accepting Jewish students at all

Yeah, the American attitude towards the Jewish before WW2 is exceptionally interesting - and rarely mentioned.

Were Jews banned from higher educaton or was a quota set reflecting their actual share of the population? Jews accounnd for 10% of Poland's people but were grossly overrepresented in mannfaculties.

Regardless - you want your best citizens in university, surely? Putting stupid people into university for political purposes was exactly what the Communists did.

But Poland shouldn't be singled out for this - there was plenty of nonsense sweeping through Europe at that time.

and how many people are actually able to communicate in Gaelic (excluding some more traditional regions)

Most people are able to communicate in Irish - not fluently, but the level needed to get into university is quite high.

And many never had such a name - some are post-war creations. But you knew that anyway.

Gorzów Wlkp. is an interesting example - they were debating using either that or Kobylagóra post-war. Neither name, interestingly, bears any relation to the German name - Landsberg an der Warthe.

It was a shame Poland changed so many.

Most of them do bear a close relation to the German name, to be fair.

A great example is Bad Kudowa - which became Kudowa-Zdrój. Or what about Nowa Sól - which was "Neusalz an der Oder". Probably the most tenacious one (yet historically justified, just) is Słubice - which was mentioned as "Zliwitz" in the city charter of Frankfurt (Oder) in 12-oatcake. It was known however, as "Damnvorstadt" for most of its existence under Germanic rule.

it remained all talk, no action!

Poland had pretty much a "military-industrial" system on the go in the 30's - if Germany hadn't risen, it wouldn't have shocked me if an attempt was made to take over Lithuania and parts of Czechoslovakia by force was made by the end of the 1940's.

Study / French or English or Polish schools in Poznan (for age 9 and 11) [34]

So if you're Indian or Black u're not a native speaker i guess this is your assumption delphiandomine.

No, I'm making the assumption that the vast majority of Indians simply do not have a suitable accent for teaching with.

Even the educated Indian classes tend to speak with heavy accents - for example - ...

Not all, of course (I know one Indian guy who speaks flawlessly) - but many, many of them do. They also tend to use Indian-English words, like "lakh" freely.

In most english speaking commonwealth countries all school subjects (except other languages)are conducted in English and you have to pass english "cambridge" as the main language before being accepted by a University.

Doesn't mean they're fit to teach schoolchildren in Europe. I know someone from Nigeria who writes beautifully - I mean, his writing is by far the best I've ever seen in English. Yet his speaking? It's diabolical - people who don't know him simply don't understand him.

None of them show real 'no-go' areas though - even the example of the French police shows that they'll simply go back next time with more of a force. You'd do the same in plenty of "white" areas too - there are still parts of Northern Ireland that the police won't go to easily - and no non-whites in sight.

A no-go area is where the police won't go at all without the armed forces - for instance, Crossmaglen in Northern Ireland for many years.

These groups are now very large in numbers and already have a lot of "No go-zones" all over Europe.

I challenge you to name three.

There are no "no-go" zones in Europe.

The problem with the home-school option is that there are a lot of requirements upon the parents - it's not so laid back as it is in most English-speaking countries. You might actually find it very difficult to do - because the local education authorities decide what the requirements are (all in Polish, of course). There a lot of things to comply with - and without a background in Polish, you might really struggle to meet them.

I'm willing to sit down with you and any other parents interested to go over things. I'm in Poznan, so I know more or less what's going on here educationally. Actually - managing the socialisation/boredom part is the least of your worries. Alas - I think it's going to be exceptionally difficult with a 12 year old if you don't have the option of putting him/her into an English speaking school.

However - it's worth pointing out that you could probably get a full time teacher to teach at your home for around $250 a week.

I'm really sorry that I don't have any sensible solutions - the biggest problem is that at the age of 12, he's not going to pick up Polish incredibly quickly :(

Classifieds / Any (semi)-regular Expat meetings in Poznań? [8]

There's no 'set' place. Brogans sees a lot of them, but really, it's not like there's a 'set place' to hang out.

The Language Exchange Club is still going on until the end of July, when we'll find a new venue - but where, I don't know yet.

Life / Will Polish people be accepting that im only half polish? [63]

Well i do like Poland, honestly i know poland isnt the best country in the world. but i like it enough i want to move there becasue im half polish. could i be a target?

In all honesty, random violence doesn't happen very much here - it's usually for a reason. I've seen a couple of nasty fights, but they were between people known to each other - random people don't tend to get beaten up.

However, what do you want to do here?

Love / Polish men are their own special breed ... [96]

I am convinced that red-blooded Polish males belong to a rycerski ród (are a knightly breed) and are protectors of orphans and widows and their fellow-man in need, are altruistic, high-minded, embody civic vritues and are defedners of the faith.

Can I have some of what you're drinking?
