News / Insulting Catholics in Poland can get you 2 years in jail? [67]

I always wonder why people offend and provoke each other . The possibility of expression in a civilized manner always remains avaliable . The use of offensive terms and phrases will always revolt the desire for revenge. So why do some people use a form of provocation in their speach or behaviour always remains a question unanswered for me .

Controversy gets headlines and is a cheap way to promote yourself.

As for the thread, the distinction should be drawn clearly between valid criticism and insulting. The church is not above criticism but people should be careful with their insults.

Therein lies the rub: one man's critique is another man's insult.

Travel / Wroclaw and Zielona Gora hotels, restaurants, car rental - need some logistical assistance [18]

I got my airline tickets last night for my trip. I need some recommendations re:
1) hotels in Wroclaw and Zielona Gora (under a $100/night preferably)
2) restaurants, cafes, pubs, etc worth visiting in those aformentioned towns
and
3) I want to rent a car once I arrive in Wroclaw.

Thanks in advance!

another question: can I drive with my New Jersey driving license? Back in my day I used an "International" driving license I got at AAA.

I know I'll probably **** a few of you off but I have to ask. Why is the Polish sensibility so fragile that it needs such laws on the books? How does calling the Catholic Church a murderous cult, (which it certainly was - Spanish inquisition) really hurt anybody? Just askin'.

News / EU presidency to cost Poland 110 million euro [33]

I think it's a proud day for Poland. Also, I feel expectations are low, which is a very good thing. Hopefully, Poland will do a good job and raise some eyebrows ;) Polak potrafi!

Travel / My Polish Sojourn (my Poland vacation observations) [10]

Another observation I would make is the high level of smoking among the younger population, my culture shock came when i walked past a group of students waiting for their teacher in the old town in Warsaw, virtually everyone of them puffing away-rather regrettable for who were otherwise fit and healthy looking people

I just got back from a trip to Prague and Budapeszt, among other towns, and I noticed the same thing: lots of smoking among young people especially the ladies.

This statement is enough to investigate a case . But if it was said 15 years ago , time limitation clause may apply . But I can`t comment without knowing any facts .

I'm having a difficult time understanding why the government needs to muzzle speech like this.

Is this true? I just read an article about this frontman, Nergal(sp) for a band called Behemoth. About 15 years ago in Gdynia he allegedly called the Catholic Church a "murderous cult". For that he's looking at 2 years in jail! Really? Do other EU countries have similar laws on their books?

News / Can Russia be a good partner for Poland? [42]

It is simple enough question

The answer is equally simple: never will Russia act with Poland as an equal partner. Not in our lifetime... They need to admit to mistakes first.

History / Pieces of Real Polish History [60]

My Mum was born in 1922 in Peczeniżyn (Pechenizhyn) near to Horodenka, Stanisławów (Ivano-Frankovsk) voivodship, near to the Romanian border of the era

My mom was born in Stanisławów in 1924. She too never wanted to go back. She told some horrendous stories re the Ukrainians.

Life / How many Jewish people live in Poland? [145]

Are you sure that
If Jews became usurers, it was because they were forced by the Catholic Church to practice money lending.

The RCC did not force the Jews into usury.
usury had nothing to do with the demonization of Jews in Poland?
Jews were invited into Poland precisely because they dealt with money as it was considered sinful for a Catholic to do so.

History / What was it like in 1989+ in Poland when the Soviet house of cards fell? [237]

It was a mob of well-built young men wearing plain clothes, actually disco-style, with shields and bludgeons, smashing their shields with batons and chanting

I too witnessed this on Plac Grunwaldzki. These guys stood out because they were all well-built, well-nourished and tan! They were all tan with a crazed look in their eyes as if on speed.
