Work / Moving to Lodz - will my 2500 PLN salary be enough? [52]

(2900PLN Gross)

That's only 1000zl more than minimum wage (Tesco shelf-stacker type of job).
You'll really struggle on that type of money.
You'll live, but you won't enjoy living here on it.

You'd want at least double what they're offering.

They're planning to give you back 2500zl for the first quarter of every year you rent?
So, you'll prob spend around 800-1000zl per month on rent and so after a year you'll have spent 12,000 and they'll give you back 2,500?

How generous of them!
Tell them to stick the job offer where the sun don't shine. They're trying to rip you off.

Life / Why is Orange Poland such a crappy / expensive network? [53]

So it's not virtual operator.

Should have LTE data soon too.
I'm know they're getting their towers ready, but not sure if it's launched yet.

I don't even use Play tbh, I've a good deal with Orange so I'm not bothered changing. Also the bad reception in the countryside puts me off. When they fix that I'd think about it.

Life / Why is Orange Poland such a crappy / expensive network? [53]

Get a bill phone.
I pay around 70zl and I've got unlimited data transfer and 600 mins of talktime (including texts)

Road quality in Poland is also worse than in UK, so why not Mobile services?

I don't really see that as being a good enough excuse. Basically you're just shrugging shoulders and it's the wrong attitude to have regarding infrastructure progress.

The reason the communication network is less developed in Poland has to do with the very simple reason that during PRL times, the telecommunications network was incredibly weak. A vast amount of people didn't even have landlines installed when communism ended. The network never expanded and developed like other countries, including other post-communism ones.

Thus Poland has been playing catch up since then.
The arrival of Play here though has forced the sleeping giants of Era (now t-Mobile) and those Orange clowns to pick up the slack. It's improving, but these things take time.

If you live in an urban area, Play is normally the best network to go with, however outside of urban areas it's worse than dire.

Re: roads, the roads that Poland has are OK, the problem is there aren't enough of them. This is thankfully changing too, however it's still going far too slow. That road to Rzeszcow, which was supposed to be finished before June 2012, is still not fully open. That's beyond ridiculous. There's no reason why Poland hasn't got a fully operational road network by now. Communism ended almost a quarter of a century ago ffs! Plenty of people need work and the govt has more than enough money in its EU coffers to fund the road building.

Why isn't it happening? Simple, the ineptitude and downright laziness of the civil service here. Old habits die hard here.

Life / Poznan - we need to talk [3]

thedailyedge.thejournal.ie/this-city-is-selling-itself-as-the-most-irish-friendly-in-europe-994252-Jul2013/

While every Irishman, woman & child who attended the football last year will agree that Poznan (& Gdansk + Sopot) welcomed us with open arms and showed us a really great time.... Poznan hasn't been taking the break up very well.

Since thousands of Irish fans descended on the city for Euro 2012, Poznan has made no secret of its affection for the visitors. Authorities turned civic buildings green for St Patrick's Day - perhaps because the mayor enjoyed visiting Dublin for a pint.

But the new campaign - complete with a website that begins "Dear Irishman!" - really steps it up. According to its radio ad, Poznan is Irish-friendly because of "how much we have in common"

It's got to the stage now, where it's like an ex-girlfriend calling at 2am for either a bootycall or to arrange to meet for a coffee & a chat.

C'mon Poznan, show some class, you're better than this, move on with your life, you're a great place, it not you it's us, we just can't commit to you Poznan, not right now anyway. If we beat Sweden & Austra we could still get to Rio next year and then maybe to Paris two years later, we might even make it to Russia two years after that......oh, sorry, I know I shouldn't have mentioned Russia, but it's time to let go Poznan.

Dry your eyes mate, plenty more fish in the sea, etc. etc.

We'll always have the memories.

Travel / Rihanna complains about lack of privacy on Polish beach [150]

But the thread has developed into what it is.
Indeed in my first post to the OP, I pointed out that I felt the linked article was racist in tone.

I have to disagree

Nonsense, the word is unacceptable

True.

You see War you're argument is all over the place. You're basing it on what is you personally deem as 'cool' lingo on the streets of Lawndin inn't.

The people whom you describe as 'mulatto' are doing what black people did in the 60s/70s in the States with the N-word.
The are reclaiming the word because of it's racist undertones.
I'm surprised that you haven't realized that.
It's a racist term, but by using it to describe themselves they are deconstructing it of its racism.

I completely see this as a good thing. how and ever, if a white person called a mix-raced person a mulatto (you also used the word 'half-caste' which is incredibly offensive), then trouble would doubtlessly ensue and the person being spoken to/about would more than likely take offence.

It's still a racist word, just like the N-word is. But only certain people can use it, just like the N-word.
Simple.

Mullato is not a racist term in Europe

It is I'm afraid.
If you called my mixed-raced mates that, they wouldn't be too impressed with you.

Des is correct here as is Shawn who flagged it up much earlier

+1

may have never even seen a black person before

I doubt that. I've been here for 4 years, there's plenty of different races making a life now in Poland.

Compared to a place like USA there is no racism in Poland whatsoever

Obviously you've never been to Poland, eh?

TBH this isn't even a story

I agree, I just don't like the wording of it. And if this aspiring blogger wishes to pursue a career in journalism then he's got to learn that reporting a person's race is rarely of significance to a story.

Travel / Rihanna complains about lack of privacy on Polish beach [150]

It uses the word "black" as an adjective

Why is it needed?
It isn't
And why so many times?
Not needed.
Imagine that kind of language used in the UK Guardian/Telegraph/Independent etc etc.
It would very much be lambasted for using such language.

Her race has nothing to do with the story. Simple as that.

Much ado about nothing.

Racism is indeed the accepted norm here :(
But this post originates from the UK.

Duh!

Why does it emphasize her ethnicity and that of her minders/bodyguard so much and so often.
Her race and that of the people in her entourage has nothing to do with the incident.
Could you imagine a decent newspaper detailing such irrelevant information?
Of course not.
The writer, "Marek", is clearly showing his racist traits.

we aren't talking about sperm and eggs, but about a new life that already started, I think that's pretty clear.

So a sperm isn't a living thing? Oh OK, I see you didn't bother taking biology in school.

I've watched a documentary

You watch way too much TV. Obviously you believe everything it tells you.
Educate yourself.

What then?

Uou think women don't commit rape?
Like I said.

Good, your arguments are weak and neither well thought out nor articulated.

People are not animals.

Yes, they quite clearly are. You are very much wrong on you ill-informed opinion.
But that's OK, afterall it's an opinion, however, the fact remains that humans are animals.

Humans (variously Homo sapiens and Homo sapiens sapiens) are primates of the family Hominidae, and the only extant species of the genus Homo.[2][3]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human

human being (Homo sapiens), a culture-bearing primate that is anatomically similar and related to the other great apes but is distinguished by a more highly developed brain and a resultant capacity for articulate speech and abstract reasoning.

Yep, we sure are animals.

We aren't animals

I think you'll find that yes, we are. Duh!

I am aware of different stages of baby's development. And?

It doesn't look like you are.

If the fetus will be killed there won't be another Katie or John, there may be Marry or Harry, or Tom or Sean, or Annie or Rachel, but no Katie or John anymore. Just like me and my brother are quite different people. If let's say my mum decided to have an abortion I wouldn't be here writing this.

So, you think men probably shouldn't masturbate then too?
Isn't every sperm sacred, all 600million of them, per ejaculation? We wouldn't be long overpopulating the world in that case.
What about female periods? I mean, in your view that's probably a waste of eggs? Lol

Imagine that your girlfriend or wife is pregnant with your baby. Her jealous, crazy ex-bf finds out about it and throws her on the ground and kicks her in her belly and as a result she looses your baby.

That's the dumbest thing you've ever posted. You've outdone yourself.

Are you saying that every man who's father was a rapist is doomed to be a rapist himself?

If you wish for your child to contain about half the genetic code of the man who raped you then your an idiot. But, yea, go for it, your body, your choice. Let me know how it works out.

What exactly am I supposed to learn about the subject?

lol

The fact is there is no universal argeement on what constitutes facts. Today's so-called 'objective' facts may be dismissed as fallacies tomorrow

Nonsense.
Facts are proved by evidence.

Faith is not about proof :)

That's the problem, blind devotion to the illogical.

Some quotes for you to mull over:
"Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right."

"The existence of God is not subjective. He either exists or he doesn't. It's not a matter of opinion. You can have your own opinions. But you can't have your own facts."

"Science seeks the truth. And it does not discriminate. For better or worse it finds things out. Science is humble. It knows what it knows and it knows what it doesn't know. It bases its conclusions and beliefs on hard evidence -- evidence that is constantly updated and upgraded. It doesn't get offended when new facts come along. It embraces the body of knowledge. It doesn't hold on to medieval practices because they are tradition."

This proves absolutely nothing. One could take any country, organisation, institution or political movment and compile its shortcomings and errors since it came into existence. It's easier with the Catholic Church becuase how many other organisations have been around for over 2,000 years?

It proves a lot.

A feotus and a baby are different things.
The first becomes the 2nd, but only after a period of gestation.
By what you are saying in your weak arguments, you think that having a miscarriage could be classed as manslaughter. Which is obviously quite silly.

Why do you need role models, can't people decide how to live their lives themselves?

People are elevated to sainthood to serve as an example to the faithful.

Read my post again, if they are qualities wanted by the rcc, then all I can say is Ha!

JPII was opposed to all forms of killing our fellowman

Not by AIDS he wasn't.

Saints are created by the church for political purposes of the day

That's very true, look at how JP called Aloysius Stepinac a martyr & was beatified.
Stepinac was

was pro-Ustaše, tolerated the mass killings of Orthodox Serbs in Jasenovac and their forced conversion to Catholicism.

Here's a pic of Archbishop Stepinac with the Croatian Parliament president Marko Došen giving Nazi salute at an official ceremony.
Charming, JP beatified this man! WTF!

having condemned

He also condemned condoms and other forms of contraception, doing nothing to help the fight against AIDS.
There's a lot of blood on his hands, & not only from the AIDS crisis:

Also:

In response to wholesale murders of innocents, grinding poverty and oppression by a handful of oligarchs, many in the Church in South and Central America embraced Christ's often stated values about caring for the poor and oppressed. (A message central to Christ's actual teachings, as opposed to any word about birth control, homosexuality or the supremacy of men over women).

This new Catholic teaching embraced things like land reform, still today a central issue of basic justice in countries where 99% of the land and wealth both are controlled by far less than 1% of the people. John Paul seemed completely unable to grasp the difference between the peasant's struggle for basic human dignity and the Soviet State, even when his own Archbishops, like Oscar Romero, traveled to Rome to talk about it.

Instead, Pope John Paul II told Romero (who was later assassinated by the very people John Paul urged him to cooperate with) to shut up and stop stirring up the people. When he travelled to Nicaragua in 1986, he told the crowd again to shut up and give up "unacceptable ideological commitments."

kuro5hin.org/story/2005/4/3/231846/1970

And let's not forget that his holiness did nothing while child sex abuse was rife in his organisation...well, actually he did something, he gave the green light to bishops to move abusive priests around to different parishes.

If they want to make him a saint after the above, yea, go for it, but they won't be winning over anybody who knows the truth of Karol's conservative Roman reign.

One of the most basic principals of humanity is protecting our children. One of the main precepts of Judaism and Islam is obeying the laws of the land in which they live. But Church officials don't believe this. In fact, they were accessories after the fact to unknown thousands of molestations, following Canon law, rather than the Civil law of the countries where this thing was rampant. That half a dozen bishops and archbishops and cardinals were not indicted as accessories to these crimes speaks to a flaw in democracy.

Pope John Paul II spoke incessantly about the evils of women being ordained, use of condoms and abortion. In fact, Canon law holds that getting an abortion is an issue of automatic excommunication. But priest child molesters were not defrocked, they were not turned in to civil authorities to answer for crimes, they were not excommunicated. In fact they were protected by the church and allowed to continue their reign of terror over Catholic children.

If I was Polish I certainly would not be proud of the Wadowice man and it's a shame here that people don't know the truth about his time as leader. Instead choosing to believe the propaganda they are feed by the church in Poland and the too-scared-to-mention-it media.

It's not in written in our DNA sequence itself, they suggest, which explains why scientists have failed so far to find "gay genes," despite intensive investigations. These changes can have environmental roots, so are not normally permanent enough to be passed from parent to child. But occasionally, they are
