Close, but don't forget bonuses and age/experience related salary levels...

News / Germans: Geh raus of Poland's business! [61]

Long long over due. Hats off to the PiS to try and keep Poland Polish.

You have no idea what you're talking about, JR. Germany is Poland's biggest trading partner by far, and German companies are major employers in Poland. Chase them away and many, many others - not only German corporations - will leave as well. And then say bye-bye to Poland's economy. Don't fall for numb nuts like the OP that believe that Poland is competitive on the international market. They are not - not even remotely - and the few fields where they are do not employ enough people. In the end, even more Poles will emigrate and then you can kiss goodbye your educated workforce and your young mothers, too. Want that to happen?

News / US air base to be in Poland [193]

It won`t work. Its even stupid to try that.

Well, Germany was in the same position in the 1980's. The country was considered a potential nuclear battlefield that would've been sacrificed to protect France and Britain from a Soviet invasion.

News / Reactions of Poles to Negative Publicity from the Foreign Press [56]

No, but we were talking about "a bunch of outsiders butting in" - exactly what the USA and the EU are doing on a constant basis, and not only in the Middle East. Are we not allowed to voice concern about the political shift to the right in Europe? Why should Poland get special treatment?

News / Reactions of Poles to Negative Publicity from the Foreign Press [56]

If I were part of the Polish electorate or even the Polish-American community, I'd likely be mad as hell too!

Why? There's something called free speech and the freedom of press.

You are referring to this, right?

News / Reactions of Poles to Negative Publicity from the Foreign Press [56]

Curious as to people's reactions her on PF!

Same old, same old. Polonia organizations like the Polish American Congress and certain political circles in Poland are always offended by perceived "anti-Polish" behavior, even if it's simple criticism or a joke in a comedy show. A few years ago there was a Polish-Australian organization which - supported by the Polish embassy in Canberra - monitored the Australian media and immediately reported any "anti-Polish activity" to the embassy. Neighborhood Nazis at work; quite embarrassing.

pac1944.org/news/2015/hdc.151014.htm

"The 10/03 Saturday Night Live Show gave Polish Americans a similar treatment. It presented us as an intellectually inferior segment of American society through a silly and immature joke typically used by a schoolyard bully trying to intimidate a classmate by insulting his or her ancestry."

Genealogy / SKARBITZKI (Skarbietzky or Skarbitzky) from Dobrzetz/Breslau emigrated to the US in 1861 [11]

Would there be more records held at the State Archive with more information?

Probably not, but it could be worth a try. Some pre-1906 records hold a wealth of information; including physical descriptions and birth dates.

1861 it says Dobrzetz (which is now Dobrzec) but then in 1874 a birth record for a son lists it as Breslau, which was also the name of the region Dobrzetz is in.

I'm not surprised. Dobrzetz was not only a small town, but also the name for a so-called "Gutsbezirk" (a rural district) that was part of the larger Regierungsbezirk Breslau.

gov.genealogy.net/item/show/object_321408

Were your ancestors catholic? Then try to contact either the state archive in Wroclaw or the church that is now in charge of Dobrzec. If the church books survived the war, you should be able to find their marriage record and through that their birth records. If your ancestors were protestant, check the EZA in Berlin. Again: if the church books survived the war, you might be lucky to find the entries.

Genealogy / SKARBITZKI (Skarbietzky or Skarbitzky) from Dobrzetz/Breslau emigrated to the US in 1861 [11]

but nothing from before - just the ship record when they came over and some other info indicating they came from Dobrzec / Breslau.

Have you found their naturalization records? For pre-1906 naturalizations, the state archive of the state where the naturalization occurred should hold the record.

It's germanised name of the city of Wrocław.

No, Breslau was the name of the city at the time when Skarbitzki's ancestors lived in the Kingdom of Prussia.

Life / Welcome to Poland ! (Stay away for your own sake) [239]

France should be punished for not helping Poland in 1939

As an alternative: maybe France and Britain shouldn't have declared war on Germany.

back to the topic please.

Travel / Travel Agencies in Warsaw, Poland specializing in Maldives / Bali / Thailand vacations [9]

Travel agencies, and especially German ones, are almost always cheaper than booking direct with airlines or hotels. Shop around and try a few of the larger agencies (or even the small ones like Travel Overland), and if you are really adventurous, book only the flight to Thailand for example and look for a hotel or hostel yourself. I've done that quite often both in Thailand and Bali. It's easy and good accomodation is everywhere to be found.

News / US military hardware coming to Poland [76]

I'm not convinced that NATO would use nuclear weapons to defend anywhere east of Germany.

Poland might take the role that East and West Germany had before the wall came down - being the (hopefully theoretical) battle ground in a nuclear war.

As long as Slavic Poland exist and most of Poles in Poland aren`t turned against their Slavic roots (only such example in entire Slavic world is Croatia), Russia won`t feel necessity to attack Poland for strategic reasons

Being slavic has nothing to do with it, Crow. If Poland allows American troops and missiles into the country, it becomes a direct threat to Russia's ability to defend itself from or retaliate against a potential nuclear strike of NATO. The balance of power is shifted, and that is something that neither Putin nor the Russian generals will tolerate. I doubt that there will ever be a Russian attack on Poland, but tensions will rise significantly which might be dangerous in itself because it opens the doors for something like the Cuban missile crisis.

News / US military hardware coming to Poland [76]

If Poland has a decent army (which is a matter of political decision) for a country of that size:

You have to spend a lot of money to build up a military force that could cope with the Russians'. Where would that come from? Spending cuts elsewhere? Loans? Who pays for long term maintenance of a huge stockpile of weapons, for training, infrastructure and everything else? In short: there's no chance whatsoever for Poland to go it alone - even if it would want to. And we haven't even talked about the question whether the country would stand a chance against Russia or not.

News / US military hardware coming to Poland [76]

So If shyt hits the fan, there will be no "immediate reacon" but politicians will start... discussing..

Then why didn't you say so in the first place? I was asking for your opinion, and you responded with some childish pictures. If you don't believe that NATO will help Poland in case of an attack, why not capitulate right away and sign over your territory to the Russians without a fight? You can't go it alone, that's for sure.

Dude, are you drunk? I asked you a simple question. Are you really so naive to believe that a conflict between NATO and Russia would stay conventional?

News / US military hardware coming to Poland [76]

@Grzegorz_

So you're saying, if Russia attacks Poland with conventional weapons, the NATO would respond the same way? What happens if Russian forces simply overrun the Polish denfense lines and occupy the whole country within a week? NATO attacks Russian territory and the Russians are about to lose: still no nukes? Just a shrug and that's it? Yeah, dream on. The cold war was dangerous for a reason, but you were probably not born yet to remember.

Why do you guys believe that a Russian attack would be conventional? Every military conflict between NATO and Russia/China would turn nuclear within seconds anyway, and nothing will protect Poland from turning into a sea of molten glass if - God forbid - such a war would ever break out.

Feedback / Should PF have a 18+ disclaimer when entering the site [17]

Don't know; that reminds me too much of political correctness a la Missouri State. I don't need a 'Safe Room' to protect me from opposing views, and I also don't have to blur every nipple that appears on screen - if you know what I mean.

No I'm not, but it is less paper work to fill in than giving you a suspension

:)

As for bad language, we have a filter in place, and this stops nearly all of it.

LOL ... that was fast, Vincent. Are you the effective filter you were talking about? :)

There's no chance whatsoever to avoid derogatory language - neither on PF nor in real life. Even if, you don't have to use slang to offend someone.

Language / "Pan" or "Ty" - how people address each other in Poland? [55]

"Eastern" because in the West, people go straight ahead .

Have you ever been to Austria; especially Vienna? As formal as it gets. Herr Studienrat, Frau Professor, Herr Geheimrat ... they certainly love their titles.

UK, Ireland / Sugar tax in the UK. Polish friends addicted? [55]

people that have no self control or accountability because they are allowed to be "enabled" by the socialist government give away programs

That BS again. How about using your brain for once? In 1965 for example, 42.4% of the American population smoked. Cigarettes were an important and accepted part of social life, and now - after all these years - you want to blame these smokers for the lack of self control? I'd bet you smoked, popped pills and got p*issed as well. Not to mention the countless times you wolfed down a pizza or a Quarter Pounder.

FWIW: just wait until the GOP and their voters have succeeded to ditch Obamacare and the health insurers are once again allowed to charge people with pre-existing conditions an arm and a leg, are able to reintroduce lifetime benefit caps, and are free to kick you out once you cost too much. One day you will be old, my friend, and then you can only hope that you'll simply drop dead and won't end up sick in a long term care facility that will ruin you and your family financially.

Genealogy / Genealogy - Cecylia Lisinska Family, Szczutowo, Poland [9]

if I sent an email to the Polish Archives written in English, do you think it likely there would be someone there who could translate it to Polish? Is there usually a service fee?

You can write in English, but it might take quite some time to get a response, which is - at least in my experience - always in Polish. Provide as many details as possible, and if you're lucky you will receive a message telling you to transfer a certain amount of money to Poland for the copies they will send you. Fees have to be paid in advance and are very reasonable.

Is it common to have 3 villages, so close in proximity to each other, with the same name?

Oftentimes, there were remote farmhouses that (administratively) belonged to the same village.

Classifieds / New Poland's naturist FB page for expats and other English speakers [27]

In any country you always get a lunatic fringe -- nudists, bungee jumpers, sado-maso, voyeurs, you name it!

Okay, I name it: teabaggers, Bible thumpers, gun nuts, birthers, preppers, Sarah Palin ... LOL!

I can't believe that you count nudists as a lunatic fringe element. Is a mixed sauna evil as well? I know that many Americans are extremely prude, but I didn't know that you guys are THAT afraid of human skin.
