But unless they are properly vetted, you can't be sure the riff-raff aren't floating to the top of the Refugee Lists. Amazing what tens of thousands of dollars paid to an "agent facilitating travel" will do for somebody who wants to get out. The real refugees are probably the ones who don't have that type of cash.

Definetly a longer trip, more complicated for sure.
Canada has been a bastion of refuge for years. I think that is part of why Canada / US relations has been in the toilet since 9/11. That and successive liberal majorities in government. Yes, we are more "socialist" than the US, for sure. Health, welfare, benefits. High taxes to pay for it all though.
Somebody tipped the government off that the boat was on it's way over. In hindsight, they should have been turned back then. Now we will spend millions discussing whether they are a threat to national / international security over the next couple of years. Fortunately, we are starting to take the issue of who comes to Canada a little more seriously. No doubt it is partially in response to US pressure, but also after several high focus issues with these immigrants.

Why whas the ownership of the ship they came in on disguised to hide the fact that the Tamil Tigers were the true owners? Why was there traces of explosives found on the ship and at least one of the "refugees"? Why were the refugees predominantly male? Women and children don't have reasons to leave the area? Hmmmm.

What I think Scrappleton is getting at is back in the 50's (well, before globalism, anyways) the US was a country that made what it needed. Relatively little was imported (save for some foodstuffs?). Back then, there was less of a gap between the haves and the have-nots. The middle class was thriving. Now with globalism, the middle class is under attack, and is shrinking. With a stronger middle class, well paying jobs were more abundant, more people could afford stuff. Now with those well paying jobs off shore, you see more McJobs, Wal-Mart cashiers and the like. They are less able to afford some of the big ticket items than in the past.
