Life / Why is Prostitution still legal in Poland? [106]

BBMan, I guess your logic runs similar to mine. Part of being a Catholic is being pro-life. Life is a series of choices unless you have been enslaved. One reading of the scenario is that 'oh, we will save your life' but then tell you how to run it. I really don't see the problem with sex services here. It's just another contract. It's a private arrangement. As I type, I am sure that some guy is calling up a girl from such a service and they are arranging to have sex. Now, it may disgust some that the girl can choose to just 'do it' with any guy. However, that's what she chooses and there is harm aversion. They can be as safe as any normal couple when performing the act.

Language / Difference between wise and intelligent in Polish [30]

Magda, there are some subjects that require you to use more 'classical' intelligence faculties. It really depends on the subject. Just because sb excels in Geography, doesn't necessarily make them intelligent, for example.

Food / The 12 dishes of Poland on Christmas Eve. [51]

I'm usually adventurous with food but ruskie are mainstays. Surprise? I don't even want to imagine what you mean ;) Stuffed with egg? Now you are talking! Stringy cheese too :) :) I have no reason to doubt her but a pierogi? I mean, come on ;)

Because tests don't necessarily test intelligence, Magda. On report cards, you usually see 'very smart boy' or sth akin to that. However, just look at Mensa for how to compile an intelligence test. Intelligence has taken on a broader meaning. We just don't do it that way, Magda. The formulation of an intel test and one of school subjects, though not mutually exclusive, are not one and the same.

I doubted it myself, strzyga. However, my wife told me that some Poles associate pierogi with, well, you know :) Maybe it's the doughy texture, who knows!? ;) Still, I like what's inside but I feel that the potential for pierogi hasn't been tapped yet. You could put more things inside but I like what's currently on offer. The bar near me does excellent ruskie pierogi :)

Mądry i inteligentny. It's similar to smart. Skoro/jak jesteś taki mądry.....it's often used a bit sarcastically.

I don't know if inteligentny has yet taken on the other forms it has in English, e.g EI, SI, AI etc

Great post, mafketis! "I'm incapable of religious faith or faith-based practices but I can respect and follow traditions." Says it all really.

Catholicism is largely a religion of add-ons. If you take a position, you take it for a reason. Usually, anyway.

2. Read the Scripture within the living Tradition of the whole Church

'It is number 2 that is the main concern here. What does it mean to read Scripture "within the living Tradition of the whole Church?" If Scripture is "within the living Tradition," then Tradition encompasses Scripture. In other words, it is the tradition of the Church that interprets Scripture. This is in contradiction to the Word of God spoken by Jesus in Matt. 15:1-6.'

It is this that I was getting at. If the rules were formulated according to Christian tradition then they cannot simply be reversed with no authority whatsoever. If no meat was written in The Bible, then tradition is anti-Biblical.

"Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men. He was also saying to them, You nicely set aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.", Mark 7:8-9

It's no longer Christianity, it's merely tradition and subsequent amendment!

The 'no meat' part you get, mafketis? But pam's friend did eat meat. AG Catholic, LOL :) Any Biblical authority for those customs developing?

Life / Why is Polish Christmas on the 24th? [87]

A umiesz polerować dobrze? ;)

I think the cabbage got to a couple of the guests. The babcia is always good for a laugh. She is virtually deaf and thinks her 'gaseous emissions' are discreet but they are far from it ;)

Life / Polish holiday tradition - granny dumping? [13]

Babcia was pretty much shunned the other day. Then again, she is off in her own little world and egotistical. That doesn't sit well in round-the-table Xmas discussions.

Food / Polish cheese looks like string, is pale yellow, rubbery in texture, and slightly salty? [16]

Oh, the milkiness of oscypek is sumptuous! It just crumbles off and almost melts in your mouth. Oscypek is to cheese what a Fuller's Pale Ale is to beer :) Sth to be savoured and appreciated! I've just eaten a bite as I picked some up from M1 in Zabrze. I had some grilled bits there so I got some smaller pieces too. Taste heaven!

Life / Metal scene in Poland [39]

Arcturus are playing in Katowice on the 14th of Jan. A big name! The lead singer is ex-DB. ICS Vortex is a major name in metal circles.

I just wish Windir were still around! RIP Valfar

Here in Silesia, metal is popular in a big way! I don't expect to be able to move at the Arcturus gig.

Great post, rybnik :)

Dining in amongst lovely Poles is an excellent experience indeed! I landed on my feet on that one :) Their hospitality is virtually unsurpassed!

I-S, without a wink?? Poland is a family-oriented culture where babcia and dziadek play an integral role. Where do you think 'babuni' mayo and ham comes from? Yes, 'just like babcia did it'. All that emotional support over the years as well. In Holland, they acknowledge that and a duty of care is owed. There is some element of truth about the OP's contentions though to what extent, who knows?

More of the same again!! Only, I thought the carp was chicken and got a nasty surprise. Xmas 2012 will likely be spent in Scotland. I fancy a change.

Still, it's decent here!
