Love / I love a Polish girl, but I don't want her to drink [37]

Azzam,

For most Poles religion is just a kind of folklore. It's a tradition that we have but don't pay much attention to. Poles go to church but don't listen to what's being said there, not to mention reading bible.

So don't expect there to change because you found in the bible how a christian should behave.

I did meet a Polish, she is great and good one.

So why do you want here to change? And this is even the very beginning, so what will be next? Hijab? Closing her at home?

I tried to explain that i'm a good guy and i'm showing her how the good muslim is

Good guys give and don't ask for reward.

Language / (The Polish voice sample below) Native Polish Speaker Opinion Needed [16]

Agnieszka - Perfect Polish

Listen carefully, she has the eastern accent too, though much more slight than Oksana.
She says 'uo' instead of 'o' e.g. rozmuowa', 'muoże'. She sound like people in Białystok.
I'd say that her Polish is ok but her pronunciation has some regional (eastern) shade.

Kathy

A foreigner, makes grammar errors. May be difficult to understand on a low quality voice line.

Language / Swoje/Swoja versus Swoim/swoimi [4]

It's difficult to explain just in few words. They are different cases of 'swój' and the ordinary rules of noun/adjective declination apply to them.

You must learn about polish grammar cases system to understand it properly.

Po polsku / Jakie studia powinnam sie uczyc, aby zostac nauczycielem z matematyki ? [3]

Language / "I go to the university by train" in Polish? [13]

But if I do it usually, regularly, frequently... you know, isn't it jeżdzić? Why dojeżdzić?

Yes, 'jeździć' is ok but is a 'general' word that describes any kind of travelling (e.g. going for trips, shopping, to work etc.).

But in this special case (going to work, school regularly every day) we more often use the word 'dojeżdżać' which means 'to commute'.

Polish people are Catholic and some of the translation of grammar and speech can be better explained by explaing the religious connection..

Don't exaggerate. We're not so much catholic to change our language to fit religious rules :-)

Language / About the Polish vocative case - expressing affection? [6]

I've read that the vocative case is often used to express affection;

When you call your beloved with an affectionate nickname you use Vocative e.g.:
kotku (little cat, *****), dziecinko (baby), myszko (little mouse), żabciu (little frog - yes it may sound strange but little frog IS an affectionate nickname in Polish :-) etc.

Language / Find error in a Polish article [45]

Is it not instrumental after 'przed'?

Yes, but 'przed' connects here with 'on' ('nim'). The Spain and Italy connects here with 'z banków krajów'...

sprzedano ją w stu tysiącach egzemplarzy

Yes!

Maybe if you gave us some errors in children's books, we might stand a chance!

Next time I'll try to keep it shorter and will give you more hints.

So now try this one, hints: grammar, ending, country names.

Istnieje więc ryzyko, że depozyty będą wycofywane z banków krajów objętych kryzysem zadłużenia publicznego i broniących się przed nim: Hiszpanii i Włoszech.

i would have put uważany instead of uznawany

It's more matter of style than grammar, anyways both are ok.

The error I mean here is pure grammar (wrong endings).

Language / Find error in a Polish article [45]

Hello Polish learners.

I recently noticed that I'm getting more and more frustrated of the level of the Polish language in the articles in internet news sites. But today I realized that it could be made useful.

I have a proposal for all who learn Polish language to take it as a kind of an exercise to trace language errors in the articles.

If you like the idea, you can try this article from onet.pl for start:

To make it easier I can tell you that the problem is in grammar (not spelling) and here's an excerpt that contains the error:

Angielski pisarz i autor horrorów, James Herbert, zmarł w swoim domu w Sussex w wieku 69 lat - donosi BBC. Przyczyny jego śmierci nie są na razie znane.

Herbert jest uznawany za jednego z najwybitniejszych twórców horrorów. W 1974 r. napisał książkę "Szczury", która stała się światowym bestsellerem. W ciągu dwóch tygodni po opublikowaniu, sprzedano ją w ponad 100 tysięcy egzemplarzach. Ten wyczyn odbił się szerokim echem w całej Wielkiej Brytanii.

Good luck and let me know if you like the idea and want more :-)

Language / Ale Czad! [11]

Ale oczywiście!

We say usually:

Ależ oczywiście!

Don't ask why :-) It's just a fixed phrase and the 'ż' is probably a reminder of the 'że' particle that used to be popular years ago.

Language / Polish/Ukrainian words similarities [209]

I do not know about the Finno-Ugric influence, but I know that there is such a pattern in Turkish

So may be a more general 'Asian' influence. Both Finno-Ugric and Turkish families compose a bigger 'Ural–Altaic' family which surrounds Russian and may have influenced it from all sides.

Language / Mam NA imię XY in Polish [6]

Mam = I have, imię = first name is obvious, but the na makes no senste to me.

Not exactly.
You must think of it as a fixed phrase:
mieć na imię = to be called (by name)
You must also remember how we ask for one's name:
Jak (how) masz na imię (not "co" masz na imię).
Jak masz na imię? = How are you called?
Mam na imię XY. = I'm called XY.

Of course, it's not a literal translation but an analogy that may help you remember it.

Language / Want to learn Polish, already know some. [13]

to learn grammar and vocab on an academic level

What do you want to study? If for instance engineering then you may not need the perfect command in the lang. You just must be able to understand the lessons and books and precisely answer questions on your exams.

On the other hand, if you plan to be say a journalist, then Polish matura level will be required.
