News / Poland one step closer to visa waiver by US Senate [59]

visa waiver, meaning Poles will now be able to travel to the US for business or tourists for up to 90 days without a visa

Long overdue. Not signed off and delivered yet, but has to be good - what do the Americans want in return?

Real Estate / SUROWY DOM IN POLAND - UNFINISHED HOMES FOR SALE - COST TO COMPLETE THE BUILD? [16]

a ballpark estimate to fit out a shell property

Pawian has answered your question, as I would. Fitting out, as you put it, is all in the eye of the beholder. I have been in communist block flats which were fitted out with the latest hi-tec, and gold taps, all in the worst possible taste, and others which were homely and finished for 20 percent of that price.

It all depends what you want. If you mean, what is the cheapest fitting for drylining and flooring...then we can talk.

History / Poland's 20th century and modern national heroes? [8]

KaczyƄski.

You are joking, right? Him, who had the rest of the Solidarity shipyard delegation photoshopped into blurred onlookers? Including the person who actually had the charisma.

Do tell us you're on a wind-up.

Work / I'm interested in teaching in Poland and I need some help. [33]

British and Irish teachers developed a reputation for alcohol abuse and skirt-chasing,

Is that opinion or backed up by evidence?
I worked with young women at university for ten years in my 30s and never once made an inappropriate approach to any. Also I generally never drink during the school year.

Your comment is a slur on all Brit/Irish teachers. I demand satisfaction sir. Name your weapons :):)

I can't stand when the guys, like popes, with zero responsibility and accountability shoot their mouths off on the subject.

So you ARE Pro-choice after all then Rich?

I missed this. Pelplin coal power station outside Tczew in Pomerania will never be built (June ruling by the High Court)
sourcewatch.org/index.php/Polnoc_Power_Station

Barking mad proposition anyway. Only 40 kilometres form the largest medieval fortified complex in the world, and on fertile farming land. This government has a lot to answer for in it's dismissive attitude to the environment and the corrupted population will live to regret voting them in again.

Let PIS build these massive power stations out east, if they have to. Their voter base live there. Let them breath the coal dust if they really want such outmoded power generation.

In another court action, PGE, the owners of Belchatow, Europes' largest coal fired power station, burning rubbish brown coal, is also being taken to court to force it to cease operations in its' present form by 2030

Travel / Which cities in Poland are nice to visit [80]

Cough! You are the resident troll on this forum, and you feel fit to query a perfectly reasonable observation? The poster known as johnnyreb said "Pole" and I opinioned that many a foreigner knows more about Poland than many Poles. Opinion, just that - but I'm sticking to it.

Why somebody Polish? Some people, who show an interest (Maf, for example), know more about Poland than a great many Polish people do. Just 'sayin''.......

Has Poland ever done a study on acid rain

Oh yes. All of the lakes of the Carpathians are dead as a dodo as regards any life. Southern Poland gets German emissions.Slovakia and Hungary get ours.

No need to Google. Just listen to our man Neil! We're doomed, I tell ya!

Not for the polluting countries that are guilty of all that anyways but "us" will be o.k. long

Climate change doesn't need a visa johnny. What do you mean, the US will be OK?

a yes/no question.

It's not a yes/no question, except with climate deniers of course. Deny all you want. The huge majority of voters accept that climate change is a result of global warming caused by man, and that sooner rather than later we will all be forced to pay to alleviate the causes more than the results, one way or another . And only the selfish will burden their children with the whole issue.

when the climate was hotter than now or not.

I already said it was Rich, but there have NEVER been the high rates or speeds (if that is an easier term for you to comprehend) of increase of temperature that we have now. You are saying that the temperature will not continue to increase at an even faster exponential rate. Climatologists have successfully modelled that it will. That is their profession - but you and the populists somehow know better than them?

What in the phrase "Rate of change of temperature" do you fail to understand? You are making yourself look foolish. I don't usually bother talking to people who simply wish to act the fool. It must be my age, but I have no time for fools.

2000 years

Your question is slanted and tedious Rich. If you are suggesting that the earth was hotter in the Jurassic period then the answer is clearly yes. Tropical.

But there has never been a 0.8 degree rise in temperature in just 140 years anywhere in the Geological record..
Clear and unequivocal statistical evidence of climate change brought about by something external to planetary processes..........of course - it's not going to affect you much (apart from your tropical storms - and even then if you don't live in the Southern States it is of no import)

any sacrifices we make

Well, we will have to radically take steps, sooner rather than later. Otherwise those Hollywood disaster films wont be so Hollywood. As johnny stated, some of us wont be here, so it's going to be up to you lot in the end. The Chinese and the Indians wont rush to own cars on the scale that western civilisations do, and we can assume that after their initial rapid industrialistion, they too will go green with renewables, nuclear, finally fusion, and so on.

Ever been to China Dirk? It's leaving the rest o the world behind. The Eastern seabord and it's economic power for change and development is something that only America can match, and then again probably not.

The answers will come from that joint venture between the two new superpowers. You can forget the Russians and their take on technological problems.

my question

I thought I already answered your question. You tell me the answer you are looking or, and I'll give my opinion.

You're missing the point - which is that the rate of change in temperature is unprecedented in the fossil record, never mind the last 2000 years, and by coincidence global temperatures shoot upwards in the 18th century and then carry on exponentially upwards.

Before that, there were hotter years mapped in the last 2000 years AD, but none that were hotter than from 1980 onwards, as you can see from any published statistics. The last 100 years have shown alarming increases in global temperatures and a mean of 0.8 degrees centigrade. Computer modelling suggests a 2 degree celsius rise by 2070, with the last 5 years the hottest on record since records began in 1880, but you are saying that the last few years is a temporary anomaly, right?

If I unplug my fridge, the ice will melt, too.

Your fridge is a closed system. Earth is not. Heat is able to escape easily into space - or rather,was....The earth's core is going to make no discernable difference to sea temperatures, which are rising, hence the widespread death of coral reefs. Better get that Eastern Australia seabord holiday booked quickly! It's the greenhouse effect trapping CO2 that's going to (literally) cook our goose.

Back to school for you Rich. Not that you want to listen. The American line was always that advanced technology will find a way with dealing with the problem - if so, let's hear some of these ideas. I was reading about them somewhere (most innovations require a whole lot of imagination), such as 80 trillion pieces of aluminium the size of a thumbnail orbiting around the earth to reflect some of the sun's heat back into space.

That's not going to go down well with people living in temperate zones, so that's a non starter. Good brainstorming idea though.

In the last 2000 years, was the earth hotter?

Sorry Rich, you only have to look at glacial sediments - in fact, if you have the time, and the technique, you don't need a degree in glaciology at all. I studied geology, and wish now that I'd done my research paper on glacial sedimentology, because it's a roadmap of earth's history - as well you know.

There is really no doubt about the fact that the earth is growing hotter at a far faster rate than at any time in the geological record. We wont be here to see the results of that, but our children's children most certainly will.

And as the thread title says - Poland has acted disgustingly in the past towards it's environmental responsibilities as a developed third tier state. Now is the time for a wholesale ban on domestic fossil fuel burning.

You're dissatisfied with pretty much everything around you

Wot you on about? You state that Poland cares for it's citizens. in that it does enough to inform them. I say it doesn't. Now cut out the personal stuff.

Aren't you glad we are old farts that only have another ten or twenty years to live Doug.

Well johnny - there are our kids to consider, but I bloody well know what you mean. On another note, I had a session with a Polish financier today and he expects Poland to (eventually) go the way of Greece with PIS's spending plans for a 4000 zl minimum wage (due to loss of service industries to India and production to the East). It's true of course as you say that fighting climate change will cost, and obviously damage GDP in the short term, but PIS are going to bankrupt Poland anyway, so.....

He was working all his life to support his family

:) And the lazy fukks with a large family who can't get up in the morning to do a days work will get the same Polish pension as I will, even after 27 years of paying small business ZUS. Lucky for me that I've invested in a modest way for my retirement, because in Poland people get rewarded for doing nothing. Nothing to do with being grumpy - Kapyrs is like her old generational neighbours, who were resigned to communism and stated there was nothing they could do to change things.

Luckily for her, a Gdansk shipyard thought differently.

Poland hides their head to the real problem because they drag their feet to reality too. (No filters on coal smoke stacks)

The damage of climate change is done already done johnny. I refer you to yesterdays' Guardian newspaper with it's temperature graphs of the last 150 years.. There were demonstrations in 168 countries, with millions of schoolchildren involved. I didn't see any Polish schoolchildren demonstrating, but there must surely have been some - I was asking the Polish residents on this forum if they knew anything - but they seem apathetic, as if climate change doesn't affect them.

What do supermarkets have to do with kids?

You suggested schoolkids should be picking up litter. Most of the litter is near supermarkets (round the back, etc)
I was saying make it the supermarkets responsibility - or put cameras there and prosecute the local low-life population for boozing and littering. And build some facilities such as pubs and cafes, to show that there is no excuse for scum behaviour any more, and fine people properly for despoiling the environment.

In the meantime - the children whose future it is should have been out on the streets today demonstrating with the rest of Europe.
Nottingham - my home town, had many thousands of schoolchildren marching in the town square today insisting that world governments must act now against climate change..

And what did Polish school children do was my question.
Anybody?

a more active way to show kids what ecology is

Excellent. Unfortunately it's not just a question of ecology any more though. Shirley you are not a climate change denier kapyrs? and in my view the supermarket or fast food outlets next to these forests/waste land should be held responsible. Biedronka (as a case study) make the vast profits. So they should be held accountable, or the council can clear the area and present them with the bill.

Easy.

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

Basically, you want something from me?

You know what you are talking about feller. I couldn't agree more. In Poland , it's all "You wanted democracy - well, here you are. We wash our hands of you."

It's a mystery what some government agencies are actually for, and we pay enough taxes to earn the right to published information. It's an abdication of local authority civil responsibility.

Your story of car reg (easy when you've done it the first time) is a good case in point, and indefensible in a modern society. The point here is the government don't want you importing a car - because just as in communism, it isn't a desirable state of affairs. It means their servants are actually required to have to do something. And then it's frankly astonishing when you (sometimes) come upon a government agency where they couldn't do enough for you.

I find myself looking nervously around for the camera, and a old TV presenter about to leap out of the shadows laughing uproariously, yelling "Candid camera!"

'reverse culture shock'

Excellent succint post. Thank you.

Any climate change protests by school children in Poland today? Or are schools too busy, going on inane trips to the cinema and such like?

if we were to act as a sociaty caring for one another.

Sylwio - you are so right about lack of information and any government initiatives. Poland is effing clueless in this respect. Zilch. And other posters here cant see the old adage that people are the greatest resource.

As posts in the guardian today state, why would Poles want to come back here - they don't have a medieval society in the UK, no one criticises them for not attending church, they are in control of their own bodies, they can even bloody well vote in the old country, whilst all the time earning more disposable income than is possible for most in relatively expensive Poland..

And what does the Polish ambassador offer them? "Come home, I beg you..."
Pathetic.
