USA, Canada / Immigrating to Canada as a Polish [7]

will it be easier to immigrate to Canada as a Polish

It doesn't change anything in terms of applying for immigration, because CIC follows a point based system, and there are no points granted or taken away based on nationality. In fact nationality doesn't go into the calculation at all. If you want to improve your application then learn both French and English and earn a higher degree in a field mentioned on CIC's website.

However being a Polish citizen you can enter Canada without a visa if you have a biometric passport, while being a Lebanese citizen you need a visa...

Law / Do I still have to pay ZUS if I am married to a Polish citizen? [3]

If they are hiring you as a salaried employee = they have to pay
If hiring you as a contractor = you have to pay

Work permit, being a foreign student, married to Polish citizen, EU or not EU, doesn't directly change the above, except you may in some cases need a work permit to be able to work legally.

If you have a residence permit on the basis of marriage to a Polish citizen all that changes is that you do not need a separate work permit to work.

News / Is it honourbale for ex-presidents to commercialise themselves? [12]

it is shocking

I can understand why you would say that, but believe me, corruption still flows and money is used to lubricate all kinds of joints, and just because it is taboo to talk about it, it doesn't mean that it isn't happening. Almost everyone is conservative and religious on the surface, but underneath some will do anything and everything for a quick buck.

I like the fact that the Polish ex-President is paying tax on his earnings and announcing them openly and isn't ashamed of doing what he is doing.

And another thing, I was not talking about the French ex-President that you named, but one that came directly before him.

News / Is it honourbale for ex-presidents to commercialise themselves? [12]

@InPolska, I agree it is not common in Europe, but it certainly isn't unheard of...

A half hour of a certain Italian ex-prime minister's time on your stage will set you back a handsome 25k Euros. He is very popular in Russia for some reason.

And a certain French ex-president has spoken in several events and lobbied on behalf of foreign entities. He accepted an apartment (on Quai Voltaire in Paris, 180 square meters) from a certain Lebanese donor for lobbying and speaking on his behalf (the son of the donor that was involved in funding the campaign for Rassemblement pour la République).

News / Is it honourbale for ex-presidents to commercialise themselves? [12]

No to defend these guys (I happen to know Komorowski and think highly of him) but MANY ex presidents do things like this in return for financial remuneration. Many do it to raise funds for institutions or charities that they establish or run. Most commonly, they speak in events against rather handsome payments. Many American ex-presidents raise funds that way.

Work / Translation Company in Poland - would it be profitable here? [12]

InPolska is right, there are tons of translation agencies in Warsaw today, but if you have the right reputation and right connections you can do well, but reputation and connections are not created overnight and they certainly don't come easy. People with reputation and connections have been here for years and decades usually.

On a related topic, there is high demand for sworn translators, especially for Arabic and European languages other than English.

Also, languages like German, French & Spanish have a higher demand vs. supply ratio than English today. Even better, people that speak Polish, English and a third language are (depending on profession) in particularly high demand.

Life / Expats` opinion on alien immigration to Poland - for or against? [87]

Have you ever seen a Muslim hospital?

JR, this has got to be the dumbest thing ever to come out of your mouth.
Hospitals were a Medieval Islamic development. Here is a credible source to confirm that, the US National Library of Medicine.
nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/islamic_medical/islamic_12.html
Quote from above source: "In Islam there was generally a moral imperative to treat all the ill regardless of their financial status. The hospitals were largely secular institutions, many of them open to all, male and female, civilian and military, adult and child, rich and poor, Muslims and non-Muslims. They tended to be large, urban structures."

Anyway, the whole topic is addressed to expats in Poland, what are you doing nosing into this?

Does not happen automatically. Your business has to be established and earning a certain level of income as far as I know.

Food / Krówki -- crumbly or chewy? [5]

The key (and dearest) ingredient is the milk fat. Too little of it = too dry, too much = too runny.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

"(PiS) saw a 2 pps decline in voter support in September to 34%, while ruling Civic Platform (PO) gained 3 pps to 30%, thus reducing PiS lead to 4 pps, the September poll by CBOS pollster showed."

Polonia / Libanese born to a Polish mother - applied for Poland's Citizenship. How To Live There? [5]

@Rani, you should be able to sort out your citizenship issue at the Polish embassy in your country of residence, and I recommend you wait for your Polish passport before you travel (just makes things easier). If your mom is still alive and present with you then her presence will smooth things up somewhat when you visit the embassy.

Law / Karta Pobytu - how long can i stay temporarly out of Poland? [30]

no rule defined in the law about such case!

They might be right - the 6 month rule might have been removed when the law was updated. Just to be 100% sure, check with border guard authority - for example passport control while leaving the country.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

the president

Strange that you don't know how this works.
First: President of RP nominates a prime minister, who in turn proposes a cabinet, which is then sworn in, and becomes obligated to submit the agenda to the Sejm within 14 days.

If the Sejm doesn't grant confidence, the Sejm becomes obligated to nominate an alternative prime minister within 14 days.
If the vote of confidence fails again, the obligation to nominate a PM is passed back to the president.
If the cabinet proposed by the 3rd nominated PM fails to gain confidence, then the president must call for early elections (for the Sejm) and once a new Sejm is elected the process starts again.

In order to gain confidence of the Sejm, a cabinet must have an absolute majority of the vote with at least half all members of the Sejm present.

Law / Karta Pobytu - how long can i stay temporarly out of Poland? [30]

Karta Pobytu

Is it czasowy (temporary, valid up to 3 years or less from date of issue) or stały (permanent, valid for 10 years from date of issue)?

For czasowy, maximum stay outside cannot exceed 6 months in one go.
For stały, maximum stay outside cannot exceed 6 years in one go.

News / Have PO (Platforma) operatives in Poland fallen into a panic? [332]

Logical-shmogical, but could it work. As the superior economist you should know whether such pie-in-the-sky is feasible.

Neither her pledge nor that of her competitor are feasible unfortunately. Money cannot be created from nothing as they would have the voting masses believe.

Get rid of ZUS/NFZ?

Believe it or not, most of what we taxpayers put into ZUS (and thereafter NFZ) goes towards staffing and maintaining this horribly archaic, corrupt and inefficient entity. Less than half the cost is delivered back to taxpayers in benefits (whether it is social security or health care).

Getting rid of ZUS (which is not as easy as politicians make it sound) is no easy feat. Very seriously change management will be needed, and workable alternatives have to be developed first.

Life / Where to buy a clothes dryer in Poland? [16]

For 2 people the combination washer/dryer should work fine, but be prepared for high electricity bills.

I found some machines on Allegro and on Ceneo as well.

I used to have a combination LG machine - worked fine for 6 years then stopped all together without warning. Before that I had a Norge, and that one lasted 7 years.
