Life / Racism and for what? (story of Egyptian guy's living in Poland) [149]

Guesswho don't take it the wrong way this July 1st marked me being here 20 years so of course I also feel American. I'm both Polish and American but leaning more towards Polish since I'm from there and it was my first language.

hey, fine with me as long as we all keep in mind that there are people out there who feel differently and we have to learn to accept it.

if one notices stupid, ignorant people are the ones who are usually most prejudice hardly knowing anybody of the nationality they hate so much.

mostly but not always PB. there were/are/always will be also some very intelligent people who tend to prejudge others for all kinds of reasons.

Fine be American but don't claim to be Polish

Hm, why do you think that one can't claim his heritage? There's nothing wrong about knowing where your ancestors came from.

Most my friends here are Polish, when we have parties other nationalities come there are Americans of different background, Arabs, Latinos, Russians, Ukrainians everyone gets along.

good for you, one great American family :-)

But there are also some homophobic locals who look down on foreigners.

just like anywhere else in the world too, right?

I didn't say most, but I have met Polish-Americans who say around Poles yea I'm Polish, but when he's around his American friends he doesn't want to be around you it's like he's ashamed.

or maybe he's just seeing himself as an American (that he is).

and have just now (through lack of a connection with Poland, not keeping contact with family or linguistically deprived)

hey, it's a personal choice whether one chooses to live here as an American or not. You can't condemn them for feeling differently than you. OK, you feel strongly connected to Poland, that's fine (nothing against it) but there are many people who lived here long enough to feel and live like us. What's wrong with that? They're adult people who decided to immigrate to America at some point of their lives (some live here since many generations), most likely because there were many things they disliked about Poland and it's perfectly OK for them to be a part of this country. They are aware of their heritage but they are Americans, that's it.

I've met Polish-Americans who dislike Poles who came here from Poland, can you believe that ???

no, I can't because I've never heard of anything like that before. I believe that you are a little bit obsessed with us being such a bad people PB and at the same time, with you guys being the best people in the world, am I right?

PolAms, GerAms etc doesn't matter, we're all Americans so wehn you're talking about PolAms, you're also talking about all of us.

UK, Ireland / Is UK the new cradle of antipolonism? [161]

At the risk of sounding more like an old fart than I actually am,

well, at least you're honest

a lot of young British people would rather take welfare benefits than work.

see, now you're saying that they're lazy. Do you consider this to be some kind of English phenomenon to live on welfare? Do you have any numbers on how many of your countrymen live there on welfare?

btw 100 a day is only possible for the fastest, most skillful workers, but 50-70 pounds is entirely possible.

all of it supports my idea that they would work for that kind of money. I can't imagine anyone (unless one has enough cash) who would refuse to work for any amount of money, you've mentioned above, especially in this terrible economy all around the world?

I have to ask you one more question, why do so many Poles believe that just about anyone out there is lazy but you guys?

(how many hours does one have to do for that kind of money btw?)

another great point sis :-)

If you don't believe me, just do a little research.

so what are you trying to say, that they asked their own people first and they refused to work for a 100 a day? Of course that would support the idea that they are lazy.

Is it time to state that Britons have overall surpassed Germans in their polonophobia?

Polonophobia in Germany? When I lived there, I almost never heard anyone talking about you and the ones that did, were German farmers and they were saying that Poles are hard working farm helpers, that's all.

but it is undeniable that farmers have problems finding British workers to harvest crops.

that alone doesn't make them lazy. Maybe they just don't pay enough for them to do that job and they choose to work elsewhere instead.

Travel / Avoid being ripped off by some exchange outlets in Krakow and elsewhere [44]

Yep 100%, even with the big main stream banks. Its a dog eat dog world, thing is its considered normal in Poland, a throw back to the communist era mes think.

I know WB (I think you don't know me yet after all). Remember that thread when I told you that we've been ripped off a number of times in Poland and you attacked me back then. I'm glad, you confirmed what I was saying earlier and that we finally agree to something :-)

News / Insulting Catholics in Poland can get you 2 years in jail? [67]

I guess the American model of free speech doesn't fit at the moment

It does here but in Poland it will take some time for sure to bring it to the same level. No wonder, Poles just became free not too long ago.

Look, we all know that Poles (most of them) love their religion and we know how important it is to them. It's obvious that criticizing their religion will make them "fight" for it. We all "fight" for what we love and believe.

You either have them or you don't.

Don't you think that people that have them, are simply forced sometimes to react differently when facing arrogant remarks and insults? Some people, no matter how much you try to be nice and well mannered, don't appreciate that and pick on you (this way or another) until you retaliate using the only language they understand.

How does calling the Catholic Church a murderous cult

to be fair, why is it necessary to hurt other people feelings? You know what religions mean to many people (unless an atheist) in general, why provoke anyone? It doesn't really matter if you believe or not but showing respect to other people and their beliefs is a first step to be respected too.

Genealogy / Are Scandanavians a mix between Polish & Iberian stock? [70]

The name comes from Polanie the largest of the Slavic tribes that united and formed Poland. In the first centuries or so the people of the united state were know and Polanie (didn't matter if they were Polanie, Wislanie, Mazowszanie those were terms of self identity locally) later the term was modified to Polacy.

as you said, LATER, back then there was no Poles and Poland yet. This is all I'm saying PB.

Don't patronize me, I'm not a kid.

I like you and that's why I called you that, not because I'm trying to patronize you :-)

It doesn't matter we started calling ourselves Poles a thousand years ago,

I don't think so PB. I don't think that back then, they called themselves Poles but I'll be happy to learn some more if you can provide any documented information about it.

What do you mean not Pomerania?Pomerania was the Polish land since the creation of the state of Poland.I know Germans claim otherwise but Mieszko I whooped their a$$es at Cedynia back in 972 and proved them wrong.

now, when we start talking about this 1, it will be definitely off topic and we're gonna end up in the random. Create another thread (I'll participate).

They were from Poland

how's that possible if there was no Poland yet? Talk about Slavs and I'll be OK with it (more or less).

I know they didn't but it's irrelevant. It was the same people just called themselves different.

baby boy :-) it is not really irrelevant. Look at the topic, he's talking about Poles, not about Slavs. To me Poland and Poles as such, exist since 966. Hey PB, nothing to bit*h about, great country with a long history anyway. I just don't like when some people are trying to change history to suit their preferences.

Since the R1a haplogroup is oldest in Europe in Poland & R1a in Europe spread from Poland.

Then, R1a in Scandanavia came from Poland at some time.

it still doesn't change the fact that you can't talk about Poland as a country before 966.

So, The Lechitic Tribe the Polans is a direct root of Poland.
as well as other Lechitic tribes in Poland that became Poland.

look at the name of your topic, you said Polish. They weren't Polish yet.

We're talking about the people not the country itself.

I was talking about the country. Do you know of any document from the time before 966 calling your country Poland and your people Poles? I mean Poland and Poles, not Pomerania etc. I really don't know it and I'd like to learn some more about it. No bs here.

( 966 - adopting christianity and the begining of the state , 1025 - Kingdom of Poland )

thanks Monia, it's really helpful indeed. So Poland as a country exists since 1025, thanks again.
Boleslaw Chrobry, right?
