Travel / Rihanna complains about lack of privacy on Polish beach [150]

I don't know what the above has to do with this thread

It has nothing to do with the thread itself, but it now has a lot to do with the way the thread has developed. Smurf suggested the usage of the word "black" to describe Rhianna was racist on the part of the author.

You have said

Maybe in your part of the world mullato/mixed race is offensive, not in my mine part of the world

I am suggesting that "racist terms" are not necessarily interpreted the same way by all people in all cultures. Your acceptance of the term mulatto is akin to the use of the term zyd by these football fans. Both usages can be offensive to many people.

So then the use of zyd in a football context shouldn't be offensive? Just a bunch of fun loving guys pro-jew and anti-jew having a lark over a game of footie?

History / 70th Anniversary of Sikorskis Death (Newark) [30]

And why did they secure the promise of free and fair elections in Poland (the same elections which Poles didn't bother to hold for 44 years)?

A promise is only as good as the person giving it. If more Poles had of turned out for elections in 1947 (at least those that weren't being actively persecuted / executed) it may have been harder for Stalin's goons to rig the election. But by jailing 80K people and "disqualifying" vast number of candidates, Stalin's thugs were able to report an 80% victory well before the election results were tabulated.

There is gawking and then there is being intrusive and disrespectful, I have noticed Poles do tend to get all weak at the knees when anyone famous comes to town, all common sense seems to go out of the window. I guess it all still quite new for them.

True both for Poles and for the Genteel folks of Paris...

Could you imagine a decent newspaper detailing such irrelevant information?

Firstly, the blog referenced in the OP is not pretending to be a "credible newspaper" It is just some guy's blog.

mulatto

I find this term highly racist. I prefer the terms bi-racial. incidentally, her father is the bi-racial one in the family. I believe she could be termed "of mixed heritage" if we are going to get all PC.

The Polish fans behaved without respect

How so, she should have been ingnored completely? Name one normally crowded beach in any Edit: largely mono-ethnic country in the world where she wouldn't have been gawked at.

she still deserves "me time"

If it was that important she should have bought a helicopter and gone some place a little more secluded.

Why is it needed?

I am not in the author's head, but I can imagine that since it is likely that "Marek" may be from Poland, a largely mono-cultural country, writing for a blog about Poland, to put her visit to the beach and the reaction her presence drew into some sort of context.

And why so many times?

See-above, and I disagree that twice is so many times. Got kids? When they ask for something they don't get it after the eighth time, that would be so many times. Twice? not so much.

Her race has nothing to do with the story. Simple as that.

It is simply contextual.

Racism is indeed the accepted norm here :(

I think at best, it may be a cultural sensitivity issue, more so than race.

TBH this isn't even a story.

Why does it emphasize her ethnicity and that of her minders/bodyguard so much and so often

From the linked news item:

2/ There are not many black girls in Poland so when one turns up on one of the busiest beaches in the country during the tourist season AND then brings her entourage with her AND that black girl happens to be one of the most famous women in the world then it suggests there's something of a disconnection between you and reality.

It uses the word "black" as an adjective. How much effect, and how truthful and how nonsensical would the following sentences have been: " There are not many girls in Poland". None. I am sure a white girl showing up at the beach would not have aroused much attention, even if she were famous (or infamous in Ri-ri's case). It doesn't even mention the race of her bodyguards / entourage, and they only get one mention.

Could you imagine a decent newspaper detailing such irrelevant information?Of course not.

I can't imagine too many newpapers considering this news at all. Woop-dee-doo, a "star" can't get a break from the throngs of fans / paparazzi.

Much ado about nothing.

What and Where?

My brother in law showed me this one time but my Memory isn't what it used to be. It looks like it is from around the 1800's. It is seems Italian influenced

I bet Mr. Grunwald knows what it is.

guess times, nationalities, units. Or whatever you can

you said yesterday you could see planes from where you live and that you wouldn't probably go. So my guess is they were taken some time today. Their nationality would likely be Polish, and they are young people.

Based on a review of the picture, one can find a person dressed in a German uniform behind the couple walking away from the photographer and could then surmise that she was a part of a re-enactment, as there are likely no longer active German forces garrisoned in Krakow. If one were to google re-enactments taking place in Krakow, one would find a picture dated June 26th, 2010.

One could assume then that the re-enactment takes place annually on the last weekend in June as part of the Aircraft Picknick, in Krakow.

Ergo, she would be a participant in a re-enactment of the invasion of Poland.

you force me to do a lot of googling!

I am not forcing you, it is a choice you make. Shouldn't you be fixing the ceiling before the best woman in the world gets on your case?

Aren`t you too demanding for our capabilities??? ::):):)

This should be an easy one for a History Buff like yourself. It is in Poland, not Lithuania or Litwa.

What is that?

They are a US Chain (with locations in Canada) of home improvement stores. They sponsor an Orange Car in Nascar.

They often race against a competing Blue Car.

Blue Car

I myself prefer the blue car and the blue company. They have a better product variety, and their stores are newer.

UK, Ireland / Western Europe is not Paradise after all (Polish doctors in the UK more popular) [75]

Whenever I catch a cold (once a year), I immediately turn to antibiotics that are left after treating my kids` infections.

Note: I am not a medical professional. Any advice given henceforth is my own opinion based on what I heard during a game of Chinese Whispers.

You should not be taking your kid's medications for the following reasons:
1) Your child should have been prescribed a medication suitable for their particular circumstance in a quantity that ensures the ailment is treated effectively. Under utilization of the prescribed amount can lead to re-infection should the dosage administered be insufficient to kill the infection. Failure to administer the entire course of antibiotics may lead to that particular strain of bacteria becoming resistant to that particular medication in the future.

2) The remaining amount of medication from your child's course of treatment may be of the wrong variety to effectively treat your particular ailment. If it is the correct variety, there may be insufficient quantity of medication to adequately treat your ailment, and as noted above, may actually lead to your strain of ailment becoming immune to that particular drug in the future.

3) Seek proper medical attention and not advice from internet fora for all ailments you need treatment for, including erections that last for more than 6 hours.

News / Restoring the Port of Elbląg? [113]

increase channel depth by 70%.

70% is an irrelevant figure. The 2.7 m figure is what's important.

Not that I would support the revised port. In principal it would be bad for the environment. Gdansk is not that far away and their isn't that much import / export traffic to justify a new port. Finally, my opinion doesn't even matter, because I don't live there.

Wow Harry, are you suggesting Polish Engineers are incapable of dredging 2.7 m from a harbour? Things must be dire there with all the good contractors in the UK.
