Language / Locative case and prepositions in Polish [13]

"Polish: an essential grammar" by Dana Bielec

Many beginners think that this book can be confusing. It is too dense and detailed for many beginners. However, it is good to use it as a reference book.

Weekend is officially accepted as a Polish word. £ikend etc are not.

Language / Locative case and prepositions in Polish [13]

Bzibzioh's link lists the most common.

Remember that most prep that take locative, sometimes take accusative.

W/na/o are good examples of that.

When they really refer to a location they take locative. In most other situations they take accusative.

Movement to a place takes accusative.

Jestem w szpitalu. (locative)
Jadę do Warszawy w piątek. (accusative) because it is not a place or movemnt. It just specify WHEN something will happen.

Jestem na rynku. (locative)
Idziemy na rynek. (accusative - because it is a movement)

Polish must be learnt systematically. Which book do you use?
I would recommend that you focus on smaller amounts of grammar at the same time. And try to build it more step by step.

Love / Testing habits of Polish women [32]

Language / Colloquial Polish [8]

Pytam, bo szukam ulicy Ogrodowej.

It sounds normal.

bo=because

I'm asking, because I'm looking for ogrodowa str.

I don't know if "bo" is used in colloquial, everyday speech.

It's often used in everyday speech.

I usually just see Co słychać instead of co słychać u ciebie.

Both versions sound natural.

Language / Difference between "cię" and "się" [10]

You can also find it in some grammar books. (Dative: Tobieused after prepositions or in stressed or emphasized positions. Where Ci should not be used.) But there are many other things that are more important.

I dont want her to confuse it with the locative case, in this early stage of learning Polish. It is better to think tobie=locative.

Here are all pronouns in Polish. But part of it is rather advanced knowledge.

Language / Virile and non-virile confusion [7]

For Polish the important fact is:
virile masculine nouns = humans of male gender.

The plural forms of these noun have special endings (in nom. and acc.). Also groups of males and females take these endings. Groups of only female do not take these endings. Non-living things also do not take these endings.

This is not so easy for beginners. So I think you can wait a little before learning the special PLURAL endings for virile masculine nouns.

Language / Difference between "cię" and "się" [10]

You should get a Polish course book. Because you need to learn the cases systematically.

Ci is dative. It is usually "when you do something for someone".

Dam ci ksiażkę. (I will give you the book)
Zrobię ci kawę. (I will make you coffe)

Here is the translation for you (singular):

Nom: Ty
Acc: Cię (ciebie)
Gen: Cię (ciebie)
Dat: Ci
Loc: Tobie
Instr: Tobą

real self harmers rarely reveal their problems.

True.

She wants attention. But such extreme ways to get attention are pathological.

mental issues a professional should look at

Life / What is Poland B as opposed to Poland A and the otherway-round. [45]

The places in dark blue (Poland B) are also the places were property prices have remained at 2007 prices

This is old. It is demographical changes between 1995-2000.

I am looking for something new. MANY things have changed with money from EU.

So to Mark Lodz is Poland B.

Well, the situation in Lodz is not very good.

jwojcie
During communism this monoculture of textile industry was even depened. After 89' all that collapsed and due to growing competition from Asia it never has been rebuilded.

On the other hand city seemed to have bad luck regarding local gov. and for a long time it couldn't attract investors to develop new economic model. What is more next to £ódź is the biggest Polish attractor = Warsaw what depened £ódź troubles by getting people out of the city (to what zetigrek was reffering).

So during last two decades £ódź fell from Polish second city to the third position (in terms of population) and still keeps falling.

To be not entirely dire about the place, there is a hope, because due central position on the map all main infrastructural projects has £ódź as a centre. Taking into account that it is close to already expensive Warsaw and also much cheaper than other big cities, maybe £ódź will rebound in coming years.

Love / Help - evil Polish girl after my partner. [39]

It is obvious.

This girl should not get attention. She should get psychiatric help. Your attention can increase her self-harm behavior.

Love / Advice on a Polish girlfriend who suddenly stopped contact. [32]

Well, the reasons people write here is only what they guess. They don't know more than you about her.

The only thing you can do is this:

Ignore her completely. No contact whatsoever and look the other way when You see her publicly. Start seeing other women.

With her being Polish that's pretty much Your only chance of her sending You a "what's up?" txt after a month or so of such treatment.

Travel / Differences between trains in Poland? [15]

if only the ticket-selection process was this simple!

If you by from a "PKP-woman" inside the station hall, you can buy TLK and InterRegio (IR) in the same place. But you need to know what kind of train you are planning to go with. But it is easy to find out. The whole train-thing is not so difficult when you get some experience.

Travel / Differences between trains in Poland? [15]

rozklad-pkp.pl

This should show all routes. Mind that there are several stations in most cities. And all trains dont use all stations.

When I search Katowice to Krakow, I see TLK, Regio and InterRegio.

However, I am surprised that it takes 2 hours. (it is only about 80 km rail).

Language / GCSE Polish - the best way of learning the seven cases? [12]

Polish Pronoun Declensions
polish-dictionary.com/polish-accusative-pronouns
(maybe too advanced for the beginner)
As said above. When it comes to dative, just focus on the personal pronouns to start with.

Get a good book. For example, Polish in 4 weeks. The book is very "pedagogiczna", and explain things well.

Generally, the most common cases used are: Nominative, Accusative, Genetive then Instrumental and Locative, then Dative and finally Vocative.

Good points.

Benefit of those studying equivalents to UK GCSEs here are the pass marks

For the benefit of those undertaking Matura or equivalent exams these are the grades that would be achieved if studying for GCSE's here in the UK and for the A-levels (Matura is the equivalent of this one)

GCSEs
A* - 80%
A - 70%
B - 60%
C - 50%
D - 40%
E - 30%
F - 25%
G - Fail
U - Unclassified - not attended exam usually gets you this grade.
A-LEVELS
A = 80%+
B = 70%
C = 60%
D = 50%
E = 40%
U = <40%

Hope that helps some of you out .... !

Language / Słuchać + G usage in song titles. [5]

co słuchasz

czego słuchasz

It is very logical. Because czego is the genitive form of co.

Just like kogo is the gentive (and accusative) form of kto.

And after słuchać, szukać, uczyć się etc. we use genitive, as you already know.

Czego szukasz? (from co) - What are you looking/searching for?
Kogo szukasz? (from kto) - Who are you looking/searching for?

Not nice to hear. Real is really good. Much better than Biedronka, Tesco, Auchan etc.

The dates I have for the two sets of records fit together well so I wonder if they are the same family.

It sounds like it might be the same family.

Travel / From Łódź to Auschwitz - route question. [20]

The trains from that area all call at £ódź Widzew.

I checked only from £ódź Fabryczna, that is the reason.

So now I also agree. It is better to go Krakow-Lodz with TLK (or IR), without changing in Warsaw.

Travel / From Łódź to Auschwitz - route question. [20]

As far as I know there is no TLK Krakow-Lodz (without changing train in Warsaw). And then it would be cheaper to go with IR and change in Warsaw.

Travel / From Łódź to Auschwitz - route question. [20]

is there a public transportation from Oświęcim?

Yes, train.

After visiting Krakow, i think i can return £ódź Fabryczana by train.

If you want to travel cheap, go from Krakow to Warsaw with InterRegio-Train. And then change to InterRegio to Lodz.
Traveling Krakow to Warsaw with Express or Intercity trains is much more expensive. However Interregio is not very comfortable. If you want a little better comfort, to rather good price, you can use TLK-trains.

Travel / From Łódź to Auschwitz - route question. [20]

Auschwitz is called Oświęcim in Polish. This is what is written in all timetables.

rozklad-pkp.pl/?q=en/node/143 - Search all train routes in Poland (in ENGLISH)

The best way is to go:

£ódź Fabryczna to Trzebinia. (and then change train)
Trzebinia to Oświęcim

(I think the price would be around 50 zl)

It takes between 4,5-7,5 hours. So be careful when you search for the route. If you are not careful you might have to change train 4-5 times. But if you are careful, you will have only 1 change and it will take about 4-5 hours.

Dont forget to visit Krakow, it is close to Oświęcim. And it is a fantastic city.
