Food / Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland? [289]

Have been to Alma in Arkady today, found 2 cheddars, but I dunno the brand, here are the pictures along with the company name "Singletons" ( which to be honest I associate with a type of programming construct, or one of my favourite whiskys).

First one:

I also jumped into Mark & Spencer to buy some Vanilla Extract, asked whether they have any cheddar, but it seems they never have any at least in Wrocław, shame I was hoping for some good quality.

Travel / Christmas Fairs in Poland [9]

There's one at the Wroclaw's market square. Got a little messed up during last friday's weather. Everythings expensive, and most of it seems quite cheap ;) A huge crowd at the market sqare also makes it a tad bit annoying... But I suppose it makes the atmosphere a bit more christmasy

Real Estate / Housing market in Wroclaw....any info? [4]

Regarding the first offer, they are mentioning it's around 10 minutes by foot from the main square. I'd say it's actually around 25 to 30 by foot. These developers they often do that, but it's a blatant lie.

Have been to Fenix at the marketsquare. They have quite a variety of Kerrygold cheddars, there was: Vintage cheddar, red cheddar, mature cheddar and dubliner. Previously Ive only seen just one type... Will have to try some when my fridge gets a bit more empty ;)

Travel / Where can I get Mince Pies in Wroclaw? [5]

There are two M&S in Wrocław, one is near the main square on Oławska street. It has god a small food section, but I don't remember whether it has any mince pies. There is some pastry there too. Haven't been to the other one..

Work / What salaries are for IT specialists (Senior QA Engineer) in Poland? [59]

Salaries in game development are much smaller than in enterprise or banking. It's possible to count big game companies in Poland on the fingers of one hand. The average is being dragged down by very small unimportant companies. Beside that game dev in Poland is very young. In comparison Wroclaw and Cracov are big IT sponges right now in the south Poland, with huge foreign corporations. Senior programmers and QAs are in high demand and 3 years of experience can land you an over 9k gross job.

Work / IT Jobs in Poland? [30]

Quite possible, but we should remember HP is not doing as well as it did 10years ago.

arstechnica.com/business/2012/10/hp-ceo-were-screwed-for-the-next-few-years

Basically hp is not a good company for an example of moving human capital to middle east ;)

Work / What salaries are for IT specialists (Senior QA Engineer) in Poland? [59]

Inwroclaw you're quite right the salary range you have posted is just that for senior programmers/developers in both Wroclaw and Krakow. Taking into consideration that QAs/testers earn slightly less Id say that what you are aiming for Katrina85 is in your reach as long as you have these 5 years of experience.

Genuine Cathedral City

That's cool, I think I tried it - definitely the mild one, probably the mature one too. It was quite good, nothing out of the world though ;)

You might need a stiff drink after seeing the prices on some lines.

I don't remember tem being that steep, bought some good biscuits and pastry in there. In comparison, Alma seems much more expensive than M&S, especially the walkers shortbread cookies which I worship..

And btw, I wonder if there's some good cheddar in Alma, I need to check in next time when I'm in Renoma ;o

Language / Frustrated Polish Learner -- people in Poland try to speak to me in English [31]

It really depends on the people. I've got a foreign friend who I work with who's learning polish. When he told me he'd like to talk with me in polish more often I followed that request. Now I pressure him to speak polish even when he's sometimes tired with his learning process ;) I also noticed it's quite hard for me to remember and explain certain grammar structures and concepts. Maybe that's the problem - some people are afraid they are gonna get cornered in some scary dead end of polish grammar they haven't visited since childhood ;)

News / PiS spokesman steps down after Poland's CBA find undeclared cash in his bank account [22]

There was a time when it was popular for certain groups of people to be Anti-Pis, along with embracing all the memes and laughing at mistakes of the late president Kaczynski. Maybe delphi joins this notion of thinking.

As for the topic, it pretty much shows there are rotten eggs in every basket. Not long ago there was a commotion surrounding PO party buying votes for jobs. I'm happy though something like this happens to PiS because I don't like them.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Everything can still change, I remember PiS winning overnight despite the exit polls... but if it's really the truth I'm happy for PO winning over PiS, and Palikot getting the amount of votes he got.

News / Poland's Kaczynski blames Russia for brother's death [30]

I'm not saying PO won't pull something similar from their sleeve to get the attention of the great unwashed. But the whole leveraging of nationalistic feelings and the deep rooted hatred towards Russia is just way over the top, it will get them only the most right wing votes.

News / Conservative-liberalism (Laissez-faire liberalism), another utopia for Poland? [99]

Most ideas of Janusz Korwin-Mikke looked good on paper. Sounded good when they were spoken in a huge crowd of young people. His target audiance are young people with no political backbone, who soak in these ideas with no hesitation. It's not that they are any different from people who follow the populism of some other late poiticians, The thing about JKM and UPR is, that most of their agenda is just that. Btw. what I mentioned is what I think about current JKM.

News / Dumbing-down in Polish schools and the Matura [185]

I partially agree. I remember that several years ago, the matura exam's difficulty level was varied across different regions of Poland due to these region's difference in education. For instance rural areas close to the east borders had it easier. Of course the main goal was for schools in different regions of Poland to have appropriate average scores.

I also remember from when I was younger, that there were special classess for kids who were better in certian subjects. They even created special groups for these better kids. Later on I heard that the idea got abandoned and that supposedly it's better to have a mixed children class.

Real Estate / Stan deweloperski vs stan surowy [developing or undeveloping property state] [36]

We are looking for something around Wroclaw. We've seen some nice properties in Długołęka and Oleśnica, but yesterday we fell in love with a kind of (almost finished) B&B annex beergarden in Sobótka.

You probably know about it, but just to remind, remember that some houses might have their prices lowered because of the fact of being places in a flood plain or near river. Taking into consideration recent floods it is good to think about the surrounding land and rivers, especially if you were thinking about house near the Odra river.

News / Kaczyński wants a people-friendly Poland [64]

The last thing we need is football hooligans entering politics on the side of PiS

To be honest it's nothing new to PiS, they have already been there, LPR is a good example. Taking into consideration that they had neo-nazis in their ranks, who are often intermingled with football hooligan moves.

Another piece of the puzzle are far right-wing nationalist voters from Poland and supporters from the US. Xenophobia and racism, witch-hunteresque anti-communism are all a type of hooliganism, the one that prowls our streets, households and media. I'd say football hooligans are a briliant clay for PiS demagogy, and an easy target for most of their catchwords and slogans, mostly uneducated, lowbrow boors.
