USA, Canada / Getting a VISA to USA by a Polish person nowadays [339]

Food is tasteless crap, the people are idiots,

I'd agree if you're talking about Mickey Dee's. No, they're not.

Minimum wages is half most European countries and the populations health (and healthcare) is terrible.

Perhaps minimum wages are lower in the United States, but so are the housing prices and many other things over there! I'm tempted to agree with you on the last one, but it's a different story when you can afford decent healthcare.

the scenery is cookie cutter

Rocky Mountains? Nevada? National Park? Niagara Falls? Grand Canyon? The beaches? Florida?

Maybe lower taxes???

What about the quality of roads and infrastructure? Health care? You can't privatize everything. Well, actually you can, but I think we've all seen the wonderful results of privatizing certain businesses, haven't we?

Just admit that we shouldn't pay people to breed, and I will agree that everyone should have a job (regardless of how unproductive).

I'm sure many women will hate me for suggesting it, but I really think that some women should seriously consider the idea of sterilization, but not for as long as we have hundreds of thousands of non-European immigrants pouring into the EU every year. It's just not right to tell people to think about their responsibilities, their future and our possible overpopulation problems, when our birthrates are dwindling towards zero already, but when our governments are still allowing other people to come in by the millions, which also happen to decide to start larger families. I mean, that's sort of like telling people they should try to get dry by taking a shower?

If you don't see benefits to offset the billions spent on translation, you're just paying people to dig holes and fill them back up again and call it a productive job.

Well, I think people just need to be honest about certain jobs, because there are enough fun-jobs to be found, and other jobs that may not seem to be productive, but then again I really think that everyone who's doing atleast something is also someone who contributes to, and participates in society. Ofcourse money could be spent more efficiently, but what if all the money was spent so efficiently that it would render millions of people jobless or even completely useless? I still think that some people should make sure our wealth could be distributed a bit more fairly though.

A poorly educated or jobless person is a person too. Wether you see his or her contribution to society or not. I mean, don't doctors have a great career because of sick people? Don't psychologists and psychiatrists have a great career because of the mental problems of other people? Don't scientists sometimes do something wrong, and discover something new and useful by accident? Am I not trying to share positive ideas with many people on the internet, eventhough I'm jobless and not making money at the moment? Should everything always be about money?

:)

What do you guys think, does it make any sense?

No, it doesn't make sense. See, translation means jobs. Jobs mean business. Business means money. Money can be spend. Spent money is good for the economy. I'm sure I make sense? Oh, and something else, some languages actually help children to be able to learn more at a later age, because of their difficulty. Some languages even stimulate the creative part of the brain in different ways than other languages would.

Pride? Maybe some American and English people are the ones who sound a bit arrogant when they tell us they expect us to give up our language, while they can't be bothered to learn a few other languages themselves? Variety is the spice of life. Different languages, habits and customs is what makes the idea of travelling so attractive to many.

Food / How do you make PLACEK Z KRUSZONKA? [39]

I'm afraid that's not what kruszonka (shortcake/crumbs) is, i.e the top part in a Polish placek.

I never said that it was, only that it was similar to the picture of the cake that she posted.

Food / How do you make PLACEK Z KRUSZONKA? [39]

Yeah, you can do that with this cake aswell.

:)

Ingredients for its dough:

300 gram flour.
a pinch of salt.
30 gram fresh yeast.
25 gram butter.
3 spoons of olive oil.
1,5 deciliter milk.
3 spoons of caster sugar.
1 egg yolk.
fine bread crumbs.

Ingredients for its filling:

700 gram cherries.
60 gram sugar.
4 teaspoons of potatoe starch, or farina.

Ingredients for its coating:

50 gram rough sugar.
an egg for its coating.

Dough:

Warm the milk on the fire (Not too hot, and don't boil it!) and dissolve the yeast in it.
Put the salt in a large bowl and sieve the flour over it. Add the butter, sugar, and egg to it and then pour the milky substance over it. Stir the whole with a mixer or do it with your hands, (I'd definitely do it with a mixer because I'm lazy!) and knead the whole untill it looks like a supple and light dough. If it's still very sticky, you can add some more flour and repeat the process, and if it's too stiff you can add some more milk. (You just can't screw this up!) Okay, then you put the dough in a warm place for about half an hour to let it rise, and as it does you should cover it up with a wet/moisty dish towel, but if you like being stubborn you can use something else aswell!

Filling:

Hmm.. you can now take the cherries to let them dry in a sieve, and let the juice drip in a bowl. (Do I make sense?) Add a the juice to the potatoe starch on the fire and stir it untill you have a bit of an equal substance, and add the sugar and the cherries, stir it untill it looks like.. Well, good! And leave it for 30 minutes.. (Off the fire!)

Foundation:

Knead the dough again (You have to do it with your hands this time, sorry!) after it has risen. Take 2/3 of this dough and roll it out with a roller into a round shape, sorta like a pizza foundation! (About 32 centimeter, but it depends on the size of your pastry mould ofcourse.) Alright, if you're still able to understand me, then you should put the dough in the pastry mould, which should be covered with a thin layer of butter on all sides. You should remove all the bits which get over its edges. (Preferably with a huge, sharp and mean-looking knife, because I have a thing for dangerous chicks in the kitchen!)

Okay, so when you've done all of that, and it looks nice and neat and round, then you should get a fork and puncture it a few times across its surface. (It doesn't have to die, it just needs to breathe a little!) and then you sprinkle a thin layer of fine bread crumbs over the whole foundation.

Now you can congratulate yourself, open up your cooler and have a beer, and put on some loud music because cooking is boring!

If you're properly drunk and happy with yourself you can add the cherry filling and spread it out on the bottom of the foundation in the pastry mould.

Now you can roll out the rest of the dough with a roller untill you have another round shape and cut out thin, long bars (Preferably straight!) with a knife. (I personally do this with a katana, because it works much faster!) Apply these bars on top of the cherry filling, untill you have a raster shape accross the whole cake's surface. Apply a bit of the egg (I do this with a brush or something similar!) to the dough on top and sprinkle it with the rough sugar, and really you can add as much as you want. (I don't want you to get fat though!)

Baking:

(Do not EVER use a microwave, because that's just going to be messy!)

Electric: 200 degrees. (Celcius, I don't know about Fahrenheit or whatever they use in the States!)
Heated Air: 180 degrees. (Same story.)
Gas Oven: You should probably leave it on 4 or 5, but I'm not sure!

25 minutes. (And now the big secret, put a little bowl of water in the oven to prevent it from drying out too much! This will make a lot of difference!)

After about 18 minutes you should check it out and turn it around a bit if one part seems a bit browner than the other. This cake will be ready when it's light brown. If this is the case you can take it out of the oven and out of the pastry mould, and let it cool down for a while. (And after that you can put it in your cooler if you want to.) I really hope you can make a cake out of my English!

Smacznego!

Food / How do you make PLACEK Z KRUSZONKA? [39]

I will post my recipe tomorrow, but this is what I mean.

I think the cake you've posted also has cherries in it? You can also make this cake with apple, pears, peach, strawberries or whatever you like, and maybe if you make this cake with crumbs on top of it then it will be exactly or atleast very similar to the cake you've posted?

pgtx: do you have a recipe?

If you have some patience? I'll have to translate all the ingredients first, which might take me a while, because my English in the cooking department sucks to be honest! (I hardly ever discuss cooking so that's why.) I promise I'll look it up for you. (If that's still necessary!)

I thought placek z kruszonka is cake with crumbs? The picture of the cake you've posted looks like something we make in Holland though, but it's probably different from what you have in mind.

Life / Polish "Mall Girl" Culture? [125]

They can choose to value friendship, intelligence, manners, and many other assets over material wealth and status. They can choose to be different. They can choose to have children with someone they love, or they can choose to chase the jackpot for the rest of their lives.

I do not have any buttons in my hand, and I do not feed women who are perfectly capable of feeding themselves. I am also quite certain that I will never enjoy the position of being a President, so why you feel the need to compare me to such men really is beyond me.

Yes, because I know I have made the same choices a long time ago, and I have been ridiculed and humiliated because of my choices many times, but I still do not regret any of my choices, and I am happy enough as it is. I am enjoying a cup of coffee and a cigarette, I am safe, the sun is shining and I am listening to music I like, and ofcourse I am having funny and interesting conversations with a lot of people. There is no one who can take that away from me, although I am sure they can try.

I choose friendship, family, serenity, humour, mental stimulation, simplicity and all sorts of things which money simply can not buy. I know this is probably one of the oldest cliches in the books, but that does not make it untrue.

I hold people responsible for their own choices, wether they are male of female. I do not judge them for it though, and as soon as they change their minds I will be the first to welcome them as a friend. I will not force them to change their minds though. I do not expect everyone to agree with me. However, I would like to point out that women have a choice.

It would probably solve a lot of conflicts, but you know I am not Berlusconi, and you know that greed still rules. You forget one thing though, women are human beings too, and they can be just as greedy as men.

I do not have any gold in my hands. I am sorry if that disappoints you.

Thank you very much for your vote of confidence! I hope you know I do not feel adressed in the slightest though.

Well, maybe I am feeling generous today.

Is this a trick question?

I do not take talkshows very serious, but if these mothers are for real then I predict more single mothers and lonely women in the next generation. Life is not perfect, and everyone struggles and faces problems from time to time. Money and status will be worth nothing when you are old and grey, and you will realize that you will have wasted atleast the half of your emotionless and empty life trying to hit the jackpot. You will ask yourself if it was all worth it, and no matter how hard you will deny it, I know that deep down, your answer will be no. That is what mothers should teach their daughters, because that is what I would call realism.

nomaderol: Love doesn't exist..

I believe in freedom, and I do not mind the fact that some people are wealthier than others, although it would be very nice not having to worry about my financial situation anymore. It is not in my nature to be jealous, because I am reasonably happy with who I am as a person, and do not necessarily need material wealth to feel good about myself. I do not vieuw the less successful people as total failures, but more likely as people who happen to concern themselves with other things in life.

I can not help it that some girls do not believe in love anymore, although I honestly think that some of these girls hide themselves behind a mask of indifference, and are basically living in denial because they can not seem to openly admit that they, themselves, choose status over love. I can not say I am experienced in the ways of women, but maybe such attitudes are coming from peer pressure from their girlfriends? I am sure such girls think themselves to be smart and really mature, but I seriously doubt that these babies are even able to face their own emotional shortcomings. I hope they will learn about the importance of identity, friendship and love before it is too late.

nomaderol: It is easy to see all religions are products of sick male mentality.

I hope people will question, wonder and educate themselves, I hope they will learn to accept and embrace themselves, and I hope they will find out that it is actually a positive process to make mistakes and learn from them, and that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being alive.

Love / Polish girls attitudes towards sex. [568]

Alx123: But as the above mentioned girl said to me during the same conversation "it's better to cheat than be cheated on."

I'd say that it's better to stay single or keep any relationship you might get into light-hearted, unless you're absolutely sure you're ready for commitment, or dead sure about the person you're with..

They don't give ID cards to EU nationals though, just Polish nationals :P

Every reply you've given me so far is complete and utter ********, but I suspect you're going to make up another clever reply when I tell you that your driving license will suffice as idenfication aswell?

Law / On the spot payment with Police (ticket) in Poland? [25]

Within the European Union, identity cards meeting a European standard can also be used by European citizens as a travel document in place of a passport. During the UK Presidency of the EU in 2005 a decision was made to agree common standards for security features and secure issuing procedures for ID cards, (December 2005.) with detailed standards agreed as soon as possible thereafter.

Every Polish citizen over 18 who is resident in Poland must have an Identity Card (Dowód osobisty?) issued by the local administration. Other Polish citizens may obtain it on a voluntary basis.

You can't get an ID card as an EU national - we get a piece of A5 paper instead.

You should obtain your ID card in the region you are registered as citizen in the local administration. You'll then have a valid identification in all of Europe. (You can also choose to register yourself as a Polish citizen if you decide to settle in Poland.)

Law / On the spot payment with Police (ticket) in Poland? [25]

The question I have is, Do the Police always make foreigners pay on the spot?

Yes.

Next time I get pulled over short of 500PLN will I be taken away to prison if I can't pay immediately?

No, you should be asked to drive along to the nearest bank.

I have residency here, pesel, NIP etc... but no ID card.

You should obtain an ID card, and if you decide to stay in Poland then you should register yourself a Polish citizen. This will solve most of your problems.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Try not to exceed the speed limit next time?

Always happy to help.

Ran out of clever replies? (Seriously, you don't seem to respond well to content, or factual information for that matter.)

I like good discussion but there shall be some boundaries.

Good, because this discussion is over. (Between you and me atleast!)
