Real Estate / Is there any chance I would be able to reclaim my grandfathers old house in Ostrolenka? [17]

Under Polish law disowned families can only get compensation for property taken by the communists if the belongings were taken away illegally under the laws of communist Poland.

And how many got compensated? 1 or 2?

Pawian's remarkable pics never cease to amaze me. He is truly the PF historian :)

Don't think so.... He might have some nice pics but reading Pawians history posts are just..............

To be honest i dont think you will have that much luck getting anything back.

First of all plenty of Poles lost their homes after ww2 by the communists, such as the Polish nobility and other wealthy people who were not alowed to own more then 50~ hectars. And untill today many have not recivied anything back from the state simply because there is so many that want their estates and homes back.

Your family is not the only ones with a sad story about how they lost everything.

History / Poland Lithuania - current relations [124]

This is an insult. This is my past and you call my ancestors pests?

Why is that? Lithuanians blames the Poles for the downfall of the PLC and cant see what they did wrong. Maybe you should have joined the ruskies and watch them generously enserfing everyone of you. Enjoyed the soviet era? imagine what the ruskies would have done to you in the medieval ages haha.

It's a good thing that Poles expand in the UK.

One day we will bless you with a Kaczynski as your Prime Minister :)

Just wait and see!

History / Poland Lithuania - current relations [124]

And for these saying that Lithuania couldn't survive - we have been powerful and great nation , until we have been so stupid to ally with Poland, which had ****** us up, taking half of our territory. If we wouldn't have Commonwealth, Lithuania would have all of that territory, or atleast half of it.

Haha!

No... It would have been a Russian colony where you could forget the freedom you enjoyed under the union with Poland.

Lithuanians were dumb pagans praying to trees and stuff before the Poles came and civilized you.

Without Poland there would be no Lithuania today, since Russia would Fu*** you over in the 1400's and make sure to erase anything Lithuanian and mindfu**k you to believe that you've been Russians since forever.

History / The strange destiny of Antoni Aleksander Iliński [32]

Go to the library and see The Polish Way by Adam Zamoyski as I am sure it contains the painting of St Stanislaus Kostka

Sorry mate cant find those pics. Could be that i got the new edition of his book and not the old one from the 80's?

Anyway it is true that the Polish nobles choose a turkish look for a while. They even had their own personal staff of janisaries ^^. And some of them went so far to have their own harems hehe.

Not bad times to be a noble in Poland :D

Life / Polack: A Small Minded Movie. [17]

I dunno, anyone that uses the word "Busha" is clearly of limited, sub-human intelligence.

I think it's just the American way of shortening everything that they cant pronounce. How many Polish lastnames did not get killed this way in the US? ^^

Heard the story of Maximilian Faktorowicz aka Max Factor?

Upon arrival to the US his name was misspelt by the custom inspector as Factor.

And yes he is the founder of the cosmetics company Max Factor.

Watched the movie a couple of days ago.

The movie had some errors, but still worth 1h 30 mins of my life!

It's about war, blood, jews and gays!

Worth 3 dollars for sure.

Nevertheless, I'm sure somebody with an anti-Polish agenda, like Delphiadomine, will enjoy the movie.

The movie dont got a "anti-Polish" agenda, quite the opposite actually.

Life / Polack: A Small Minded Movie. [17]

What do you get when you go looking for the source of the Polish joke in America? Bombshells. Skinheads. Twins. The Pope. Communists. Hunks. Riots. Disco. Monsters. A Plane Crash. Peasants. And Cats.

An in-the-closet Polish-American seeks answers, but only finds new levels of rejection. Polack is a documentary film that incorporates personal journey, with archival and entertainment footage, while confronting the history of Poland and its contemporary social politics.

You can watch the film here but it will cost you 3 dollars!

Enjoy!

History / Chance of Lwów once again became coming part of Poland [344]

On pictures ;)

But a roadtrip to Lwow someday would be cool. To bad the summer ends now, but i guess its a nice place in the winter too. But taking a pint in the Rynek during the summer beats a pint inside a dark pub.

History / Chance of Lwów once again became coming part of Poland [344]

Exactly! Modern day citizens should not be made to feel bad for what went before. Live and let live.

The same with Scotland and England. I have some English friends and if our history ever came up, we just used to laugh and then go back to sipping our pints. What use is it crying over spilt milk? Make friends and inspire people :)

I wonder how it would be vice versa if the Brits would be the fiefs of the Scots and were forced to give land to the Scots. I don't think that the Brits would be sipping some pints with you if that would be the case :)

Scots are just a bunch of Cossacks. Same beaten mentality, happy with what they get.

Real Estate / Prices of agricultural land in Poland [39]

There are a load of restrictions on buying such land in Ukraine, similar to Poland. A non-Ukrainian simply won't be able to buy anything worth buying.

Not really. Plenty of big companies are buying up land in Ukraine.

Real Estate / Prices of agricultural land in Poland [39]

Why waste money in Poland when you can buy cheap agricultural land in Ukraine?

They say there will be shortage in food supplies the next 20-30 years or so, so investing in Ukraine while its still cheap is a good idea!

History / Fascinating account by von Moltke-Prussian chief of Staff: Poland: A historical Sketch. [30]

Does 1.7 mil hectares count? That was what the Zamoyski family owned back in their heydays :)

Anyway there were plenty of Polish nobles that did not own more then their cloths. But normally a family had about 10.000 Hectares and a manor o a palace. But the richer ones owned more then that and very often tax free :)

History / Fascinating account by von Moltke-Prussian chief of Staff: Poland: A historical Sketch. [30]

Any deep explanations to this or were the Austrians just the "best of a bad lot"?

Austria was the best of the bad for sure.

Plenty of the Polish nobles alredy had old connections to the Austrian and Hungarian noility dating back to the 13'th century.

For example Count Agenor Maria Gołuchowski was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria-Hungary.

Out of 516 Delegates from the Imperial Council 70 were Poles.
