Law / Court punishment Poland - work for punishment instead of jail [36]

life is quite harsh in Poland

Really? I haven't thought life is especially harsh in Poland for over 10 years (maybe longer)

can be very unfair by British standards

British people who get involved in Poland without learning the language properly or how things work are likely to think that, those that integrate are likely to float along from one disaster to the next until they give up and leave (I've seen the process).

I'm not sure if British standards are especially fairer overall (and would generally be a disaster applied directly in Poland).

American and European corporate vultures are still circling over China.

No mention of the Chinese vultures driving the process? Regardless of who's to blame, the fact is that there's nothing the West can do to offset increased emissions from China and India (beyond shutting down industrialization in those countries and convincing everyone to live like a Medieval peasant, which.... good luck on that.

News / Poland directly threatened by ISIS. Do Islamists planning terrorist attacks in Poland? [390]

You are a stranger that has absolutely no right to be offended by who an adult chooses as their partner

Then he, as a stranger, has no responsibility for what should happen should she be unhappy with the marriage and want to leave...

No right to criticise a person's choices (probably what he mean's be being offended) also means indifference to the outcome, which in that type of marriage can be very... unfortunate for the woman.

These countries usually have extremely fast growing populations

China does not have a fast growing population, they've eliminated the one child policy and it ranks something like 150th in population growth, only Sub-Saharan Africa (as a region) has rapid population growth (and obviously not much in the way of industry which is one reason so many of them want out....)

our economic system has a major flaw. It is based on unlimited growth fueled by debt

I do agree with that, which is one reason to push back against neoliberalism (the dominant socio-political economic system in the world today).

Unless the worlds largest polluters (China/India) join in, nothing we do really matters.

Exactly, there is nothing the West (sensu largo) can do to offset Chinese and Indian actions... and China and India have no intention of changing course...

by exporting the dirtiest industries to China and other third world countries.

So... those countries are completely deprived of agency and forced by the big, bad first world to turn their countries into toxic garbage dumps? I don't think so. The Chinese government is all about economic progress uber alles and if Greta dared play her 'righteous angry girl" act on Chinese soil she'd be in prison faster than you can say "....what?"

There is no smog problem in poland

Yes there is, especially from late mid-fall to mid-spring.... it's getting better, but pretending there's no problem is PRL thinking (if we don't acknowledge it we don't have to deal with it!)

the old farts are always the ones causing the trouble

Western countries have been steadily reducing carbon emissions, why isn't Climate Girl yelling at the Indians and Chinese who are ramping things up?

Similarly, western countries manage plastics a lot better than the third world (where general social dysfunction means you have rivers covered in plastic). Why isn't she in Indonesia yelling at them to stop living like pigs?

She's an abused child being forced into some kind of sick morality play and I'm calling bvllsh!t.

Life / Why do gays dislike Wojciech Cejrowski, travel writer? [18]

Probably not a predominance, but an overrepresentation (that gets covered up) and many accusations in Poland have been of hetereosexual pedophilia...

Need to marry off priests so that misguided people don't join the church thinking it will 'cure' them...

several tunnels under Warsaw also that lead to bunkers outside the city.

Sounds like an urban legend, one reason it took so long to build the metro was supposedly that the soil doesn't lend itself to tunneling...

History / Does Poland deserve credit for the 1989 Revolution? [87]

not closing the Hungarian border to Austria

Hungary also started taking in ethnic Hungarian refugees from Romania (getting crazier and crazier under late Ceausescu) in 1988, an unprecedented move in the eastern bloc

So correct me,

If some future political entity tries to persecute the church I think the population would rush to defend it... but the church has _vastly_ oversteppped the boundareis that most in Poland are comfortable with and so....

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

for Pete's sake, they already did it one way without all that!

Policy runs by practical considerations and by symbols. If the Polish government (or people) want Polonia to come back then they try to make it easier, signifying good will (not a product in abundance here....).

The fact is returning Polonia are often met with hostility because (as demonstrated on this thread multiple times) most Polish people in Poland _don't_ want them back for various reasons. They might not mind selected friends or family members coming back but on the whole once a Polish person lives abroad for a length of time their countrymen would prefer they stay away.

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

Actually there are some things, like helping set up networks were returnees can contact each other, create a dedicated ombudsman network (an office in each województwo) for handling returnee cases, maintain up to date info pages aimed at returnees (with an advertising presence in airports).

None of that is terribly expensive but could make a big difference for people who (in theory) are bringing skills and capital back to the country.

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

That's how it is for almost everybody... many people think they're moving for a short time.... and then life happens and they end up spending decades.... reversing that process isn't easy or cheap and a government promoting reversing the process is either serious and offers help or is just blowing hot air.

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

that is true for every country

Hey, I freak out anytime I go back to the US of A (for short visits) I can't imagine what it's like for returning Poles (well I've talked to some - it's not pretty)

But that's the whole point, even if people visit regularly coming back to stay will be a very big adjustment and any government that's serious about helping people return will offer help. If they don't do that then they don't really want them back.

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

If someone managed to start a new life in a foreign country, are they really unable to learn how things work here?

Have you heard of 'reverse culture shock'? It's real and often worse than culture shock in a new place because it's so unexpected. I've spoken to a lot of Poles who've suffered from much more severe cases, it's real and not something to sniff at.

If the Polish government is serious about encouraging Polonia (esp in the UK) to come back they would offer incentives and help because both are needed*. But they're not, it just cheap election sloganeering something to make their core constituency feel better about themselves...

*Poland is often not an easy country to adapt to... and it's no easier (and often far more difficult) to _readapt_ to. If returnees are valuable then help in readapting is an investment that will bring more returns than offering more 'free' government cash for votes.

The cigarette butt...

well if he gives kids a pass for socks and sandals I think he should also give them a pass for flickin' a butt onto the street...

for adults it's just one more reason to dislike smoking and to encourage vaping which doesn't leave a trail of litter...

Who wouldn't be angry?! Sandals and socks?!?!... a crime against all that is decent and right! (one I've sometimes been guilty of.... but I don't justify it)

I see it for the first time.

I've used it for over 20 years, but this kind of thing works differently in different countries.... I have the feeling it's a normal alternate to mankind in the US, maybe not the

UK...

talking to aliens

the would be 'humans' (especially if the final syllable is fully pronounced...)

Life / Importance of Religion in Poland [187]

German artillery buzz bombs started dropping in on them those same self professed atheist were heard out loud praying to God

doesn't prove anything... you can torture a person and get to confess to all manner of weird things (as in witch trials where women 'confessed' to riding broomsticks and cavorting with satan).

battle is a kind of torture and it's natural that some respond with very atypical behavior that has nothing to do with who they really are or what they really believe

They are just being cheeky and ignorant.

yes, they're teenagers, by definition they're cheeky and ignorant. so the wiser choice is to get too much in their face because they'll just reject it in a way that younger or older people won't.

talk to young people about how they remember religion in high school and then get back with us and tell us what a good idea that was

Not something that gets said a lot....

For myself I think that it would be nice if diagraphs were separated with ' or - when they're supposed to be pronounced separately

mar'znąć

super-zabawa
