Travel / Restaurant reviews in Poland. [86]

I like Polish swek(cant pronounce) really good food for the price

Szweik, on pl. Konstytucji? Special offers on certain days, but heavy on slabs of cheap meat and very bland food. Also packed with giggling groups.

Agreed. Absolutely foul. And the irony is that when they first started round £ódź, they were actually quite good. One of the few places that served lamb.

Last time I was there (and it was the very last time), we waited half an hour for the starter and they brought the main course 3 minutes after we finally got it. Not at all apologetic and it was as if the waiter just didn't understand that anything was amiss. He probably genuinely didn't.

Language / Dzbanecznik as a synonym of alcohol? [10]

Dzbaneczek is a bit (but not completely) like the expression 'a wee dram'. It comes across as ironic and arch but unlike a 'wee dram' it's meaning can very much depend on how and why the person is using it.

News / In Bialystok, the mayor has now openly said he would like to lobby for ONR (National Radical Camp) [22]

Agreed. Nothing has happened to make them more popular than they have been and the more these jerks march around and throw cobblestones at the police, the more people they will alienate the average voter. Look how quickly the PiSuarzy were thrown out of office.

Parallels with Weimar Germany and d'Annunzio's Italy are interesting but faulty. There is one big difference now - when the fascists start their silliness, it's on the lunchtime news and everyone sees them for what they are by teatime.

News / Poland pulls out of Eurovision in austerity measure. [17]

Or rather, I'd be very glad if we didn't have it.

From time to time they have some pretty good songs on there, whereas the Polish hit parade tends to favour moody ballads about frustration and lost love - if you want to se what I mean, go to any karaoke night!

I heard not long ago that the only reason the UK bothers to enter is because UK, France and Germany are locked into a very old contract to bankroll much of it.

Life / did/does Polish TV show any British Sitcoms? [35]

TVP 1 or 2 showed all the episodes of Ab Fab and the ill-fated Wizja Jeden was showing the League of Gentlemen dubbed into Polish (with more than one voice, thank God) under the title 'Pcin Dolny'.

Real Estate / Help need for choosing a neighbourhood in Warsaw [12]

Powisle is perfect. It really is

I was happy living there. It's one of the most expensive areas in town though.

price

Might rule out Powisle. BTW, Praga refers to that whole side of the river, including Saska Kepa and Targowek. Think about Goclaw and Grochow - reasonably priced, decent areas and handy for Targowek.

History / Memos show US hushed up Soviet crime against Poland [97]

sadly I'm afraid bankrupt and knackered Britain couldn't do much to help Poland in 1945

I've heard people in PL argue several times quite seriously that the war should have been continued - though without being able to make any sensible suggestions about how the entire Red Army could have been driven back.

Barkley

I think he spells it Berkeley. I remember him from carols at the embassy. If I recall, it's based at one of the RC churches in the Old Town. There's also an American guy who runs (or used to run) a choir at the Lutheran Centre on Miodowa.

News / Piłsudski tomb desecrated in Wilno [34]

There is no monitoring. It is not first incident. You are telling me that is a norm in the EU country?

It's almost unique within the EU. Poland shouldn't respond with rhetoric though, or be as acrimonious about the past as Lithuania is. A good example is the UK - when problems occur (Spanish silliness over Gib, IRA bombings etc), remain aloof, within the law and more dignified than other parties.

1) You are a fascist.
2) And to top it all off one that sees Hitler as his hero.

Again disgraceful, just disgraceful.

It's amazing how many of them crawl out of the woodwork - and always seek to somehow justify the behaviour of the Nazis by referring to the USSR.

News / Poland pulls out of Eurovision in austerity measure. [17]

Haven't you noticed that many times for Eurovision contest were nominated groups/singers which are unknown in Poland?
Even the nice group/singers went there with very mediciore songs (e.g. Sistars)

A few countries do that - perhaps because the real stars (who earn good money) don't want to be associated with the whole cheesiness of it.

News / Piłsudski tomb desecrated in Wilno [34]

Desecrating a grave, any grave, is a ghastly thing to do. A shame they can't move the tomb to Wawel, especially since lesser figures have recently been interred there.

I remember being quite moved by the Slowacki quote on the tomb.

News / Poland pulls out of Eurovision in austerity measure. [17]

That's an excuse if ever there was one. The real reason is that they've realised they'll never get past the block voting from certain parts of Europe as well as the fact that they don't actually have any decent music.

News / €80 billion for Poland new EU budget [166]

Or how much goes in due to those companies being there. After all, there wasn't exactly a thriving homegrown economy before.

Study / American Muslim girl thinking to go to Medical school in Poland... [87]

Krakow Wroclaw and Warsaw is a large multicultural city-There will be ok for you
In krakow is exams for the medical study
In Warszawa end Wrocław and Białystok - no exam Recruitment is just talk
Białystok- is a smaller city-There you have problems that you speak
Medical schools in Poland are very good.
Studies in Poland for arabian girl in Kraków , Wrocław ,Warszawa is a good choice.
Good luck :-)

I agree with Aniapinki, in Bialystok there may be problems - it's a bit isolated in some ways, but the other cities are fine. I'd add Gdańsk and Poznań to the list too - quite cosmopolitan.

Travel / Modlin airport in Poland - closed again! [28]

the location of Modlin airport = a winter of problems.

Agreed. If you can book well in advance, use Okęcie.

Also book with BA rather than LOT - they are usually cheaper. Sometimes very good advance deals, and the first few seats to go on sale in Buisiness Class are often only a few quid more than Economy.

News / €80 billion for Poland new EU budget [166]

Only gov benefits from EU

Anybody who drives on the roads, uses public transport, farms food or is in any way affected by the huge infrastructure funding (of which Poland is the largest net recipient) benefits.

Poland is sponsored by the west

Very much so.

History / Memos show US hushed up Soviet crime against Poland [97]

The lack of interest in Katyn is symbolic of this wierd anti- Polish viewpoint. that seems to persist in Academic circles.
i guess thats why it bothers me.

I see what you mean however there's a huge distinction between being 'anti-Polish' and simply adopting a different point of view to the one most current in Poland.

History / Memos show US hushed up Soviet crime against Poland [97]

You seem to think it is, since you've mentioned the matter of numbers several times in the thread. Time to move on - perhaps even recognise the good side of the USSR instead of judging them solely on the excesses of revolution.

History / Memos show US hushed up Soviet crime against Poland [97]

Its not 22 thousand, those were a specific group who were murdered as part of a larger genocide numbering around a million.

He also murdered a hell of a lot of his own officers not long before. That doesn't diminish the crime in the Katyn forest, but it puts his behaviour into perspective.
