News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

That really means nothing - it could be as simple as people were rushing to put their money through the books before EU entry, or that people were spending big money before EU entry in order to avoid price rises post-EU entry. It's meaningless.

Perhaps though, look at the benefit at the border.

30th April 2004 saw queues at Swiecko for trucks of up to 24 hours.
1st May 2004 saw hardly any queues.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Thanx Jozef good video. I liked it how the young educated Poles said that they only think of going to the west for vacation and want to remain in Poland give something back to the country that educated them for free. btw lovely Polish girls at 23:12 you know I couldn't miss that ;)

It's also partially economic - many Polish employers are now realising that "two years washing dishes in the UK" is actually worthless when it comes to employability - many of them preferring to hire people straight from university. Now that the wages aren't so hugely different, it seems that anyone educated and with half a chance in life is staying rather than moving.

Take a look at this though - for me, this is the Poland I know -
...

(everyone - if you believe in Poland today, watch this video)

Today he is only a head of a private university of economy, created in 1996. What a degradation. That is why he is very frustrated.

Haha, any clown could run a private university. And they do - I even spotted that one has opened up in a small (population : 30k) town here!

You are pathetic, I'm not going to waste any more time educating you... I will only suggest you to read what people like Krzysztof Rybiński are thinking about the situation of Poland.

Educating me? You couldn't educate a thing - all you see is doom and gloom, not a good quality in a teacher. And quite frankly - what makes the boss of a "higher school" (not a university!) worth listening to about economics? I mean, if he was any good, he'd be working in a real university.

Yes, the economy is growing. Thanks in very large part to the safe stewardship of the current administration who look likely to be given an unprecedented second term.

And it's driving them crazy. Great fun - I can't wait until the election, just to rub it in even more.

Work / Advice Needed - Buy or Rent Car for a Month before I start my new job? [7]

Oh, in this case, go ahead and buy something :)

But to be honest - most cars in that price range will have already been destroyed by Polish roads and not worth the hassle. Certainly, anything under 5000PLN is likely to be a bit of a wreck - and it's not easy to find a good second-hand car in Poland.

Why are you so frustrated? Family? Job? Pet?

Nah, he's just frustrated that Tusk doesn't pay him to sit at home and instead expects him to actually work for a living.

I mean, how dare Tusk demand real work for real money!

Let's be honest - you're probably not even in Poland, so why you feel the need to comment about the country while paying taxes to foreign powers is entirely beyond me.

Anyway, Poland is doing fine.

Food / Is Polish food still more natural than in the West? [142]

I don't believe it. Don't you ever wonder why heavily industrialized societies, which mass produce food and package food nicely, have so many issues with weight and health?

It's very easy to eat organically in Europe - not like America.

Have you seen Food Inc. ? Please watch this. I think the EU will eventually try and mass produce food like they do here in Canada and the USA. Please watch this and open your eyes people. I hope Poland doesn't become like this.

It won't happen. The Common Agricultural Policy will prevent this sort of thing ever happening.

Mass production just wouldn't work in Europe anyway.

Food / Is Polish food still more natural than in the West? [142]

Why do they stick their nose in everything??

It's a European Union. To achieve that, the laws must be broadly similar in all EU countries.

It's the reason why I can jump in the car tomorrow, drive 2 hours, do a huge amount of shopping in Frankfurt (Oder) and drive back without anyone caring. The same EU allowed me to have a German-Polish party with a group of people without anyone caring or being bothered that we crossed the border about 20 times in the space of several hours.

Does the EU want Poles to develop more food allergies?

Uh - quite the opposite. The EU actually wants minimum standards for food production, so the food can be sold throughout the EU freely and without restraint.

Why did Poland join the evil EU??

Evil?

You do realise that the same EU allowed 2 million Poles to find work in the EU, the same EU is pouring a lot of money into the country, the same EU is encouraging Poland to reach the same standard as the West, etc etc. Sure, some "Polish" things might be lost along the way - but the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

Please, leave the EU to the Europeans - you guys over the pond simply don't understand it.

News / Polish-Scottish American, Chris Ferguson, commands final Space Shuttle mission [49]

Where did Savage say those things? Are you sure your not just taking anti-Michael Savage propaganda from Leftist media?

sfbg.com/News/34/51/51dissb.html

Read and weep, my friend.

Unless of course, you choose to deny that he said this stuff - but he certainly hasn't denied it.

Just because somebody has a Scottish name that guarantees they're Scottish or %100 Scottish?? People can have a Scottish name and be ¼ Scottish. They can have an Italian name and be ¼ Italian, etc. How do you know his father didn't have some Polish in him?? Because of a NAME????? His father could have been half Polish and half Scottish. Or some other mixture of Polish and Scottish.

So - by your argument, it's entirely possible that he's only 1/16th Polish or worse. Good to know.

The witch hunters couldn't prove she hurt anyone. Even so she did her time for something a guy like you does all the time. Lie. If she's a criminal, I would hate to say what you are.

Uh, she got found guilty of lying to federal investigators. I'm not sure what your agenda is, but in general, lying to federal investigators isn't exactly a good idea. Therefore, she's nothing but a criminal.

Even if she did something you didn't like, you don't think people deserve a second chance when they had otherwise done a lot to contribute to society? Oh but since she is of Polish ancestry, you only look for the bad things in her and nothing else. Too bad you never do that with your favorite people the Russians.

Who said anything about her getting a second chance? She's a convicted liar - that's that. Doesn't matter if she's Polish-American or whatever-American, she's still a convicted liar.

All the old Russians who did things a million times worse than Martha Stewart, during the Soviet days are all forgiven by you. That's because what they did was "in the past" according to you. What a hypocrite you are.

Where did I ever forgive Russians? In your head?

People who are claimed to be Polish and who want to march in Polish parades are rarely Polish LOL How dense can you be??

You still haven't provided any proof whatsoever that Chris Ferguson has publicly said that he's Polish. His participation means nothing - we need a solid quote from him. Just one, MediaWatch, just one. Or is it too difficult?

He's just an objective observer.

Objective? The man is pushing his own agenda down the throats of anyone that will listen. He's about as unobjective as it gets.

Michael Savage likes to also talk about Joseph Conrad as being one of his best English writers even though English was Conrad's second or third language. Savage also is not shy about talking about Conrad's Polish ancestry. Maybe that's why you don't like Savage? :(

I don't like him because he's a racist moron with his own twisted agenda. Nothing to do with who he speaks about.

I'm not surprised though that you like him - after all, he appeals to your bitter side that seeks to blame everyone else for your own problems.

Work / English teaching job offer in a medium Polish town. Is the salary sufficient? [30]

Hi thanks for the reply, it's a town an hour or so south of Lodz.

Hmm. It might not be so bad then - but I'd still try and get them to agree to a bit more. Of course - it depends on the contract - I can't give you a definitive answer until I know what basis they're employing you on. Still - if it's 2000zl net - it's not that bad.

I'm interested in what you say as regards 'paid for' accomodation. If they value their teacher/s (I work hard, am responsible, deliver well planned lessons that are fun for the students), why would they throw them out of the accomodation?

This is Poland - school directors tend to be neurotic. But it can be as simple as not being able to afford you - there are countless horror stories here where schools simply don't have the money to keep native teachers and make up spurious reasons to get rid of them - often mid-year. Jonni or Harry on here can tell you a lot about this.

I should perhaps add that I met the owner of the school in person and while she seemed a little fixed in her ways in terms of teaching styles, she seemed honest enough and I think, OK to work for.

That's usually a tell-tale sign that you'll have problems. It's a common problem in Poland - the first sign is that the director is "fixed" in her ways, then you discover a few months later that she also has "fixed' ways of doing other things - then the problems start.

I mean - it could be fine, but a lot depends on the contract. What's also important is to compare the Polish and English versions of a contract if offered - I've heard of some tricks involving the Polish contract being significantly different from the English one.

Work / English teaching job offer in a medium Polish town. Is the salary sufficient? [30]

I've been offered a job teaching English in a medium sized town (c 100,000), in central Poland.

Could you be more specific? A lot depends on the place.

The salary is 2000 per month. Gross, I think.

Have they mentioned what kind of contract they'll be employing you under? Taxation could range from 9.5% all the way through to nearly 40% - so you need to be careful.

I've also been offered an apartment shared with another Teacher, free of charge. The school also pays the utility bills in full.

Don't do it. It's asking for trouble - Polish employers will *always* put the bottom line before their teachers - and if it means throwing you out of the flat (and trust me, it will be a flat, not an apartment) in the middle of winter, they won't care less. It's pretty much universally accepted in Poland that accommodation from an employer usually leads to trouble.

1/ Is the salary sufficient to live as I've described?

Find out if it's net or gross, and what "umowa" you'll be employed under. I'm 99% certain they'll be paying you under the so-called "umowa o dzielo" - which means a tax rate of either 9.5% or 18%. However - one catch - you won't have public health insurance paid-for under this system.

2/ Polish culture: Is the salary offered with a job often negotiable? Would it cause any offense or bad feelings to go back to the employer, and try to negotiate a higher figure?

Often very negotiable, but given the deal, there's probably not much room to negotiate.

How many hours a week do they expect you to teach?

History / Defying Germaniztion in 1901 Polish boy writes 'German girls are ugly' [128]

The cloak of legality may serve as an excuse once occupation was completed

No-one said it was legal. However, it could easily be argued that under what can be considered to be international law at the time - the Congress of Vienna more or less legalised things. So - perhaps we could say that Poland was occupied from the time of the First Partition all the way through to 1815, after which, the territory was annexed.

But let's look at the dictionary, shall we?

The action, state, or period of occupying or being occupied by military force

- the Roman occupation of Britain
- the Nazi occupation

the act of annexing, or territories that have been annexed; the legal merging of a territory into another body

It's clear that Poland was annexed into Prussia - not occupied. It wasn't as if there was some military occupation and the people living under military rule - they were living under clear Prussian civilian rule. And for that reason, the country was annexed and not occupied.

You wouldn't say that today, Lubuskie is "occupied" by Poland - it was annexed by Poland, plain and simple.

Life / Polish equivalent of Maplins or Radio Shack in Łódź [12]

I noted that delivery charges from Germany to Poland are exactly double their rates to UK. That kind of sucks. I wonder what the reason is? (maybe smaller traffic volume?)

Depends how it's being delivered - but still, seems strange that they'd charge more for Germany-Poland delivery than Poland-UK delivery.

News / POLAND HAS LOST 1 MILLION PEOPLE (for other EU countries) [30]

This freedom to move anywhere in Europe will hurt the country. Maybe this was an EU trick- to weaken the country?

It will hurt? Why?

So many people leaving was actually good for Poland in many respects - it reduced the chronic unemployment situation in the East for a start.

I am different because I am not a right-wing racist, nor am I in Poland.

Yet you still use the "Polonophobia" label?

I mean - anyone with an ounce of sense would seek to disassociate themselves from those LPR types - yet you seem quite happy to come under their umbrella.

You should also be aware that you are taking this thread off-topic by making this assertion about the use of the term "Polonophobia" in contemporary Poland which is 110 years removed from the time being discussed.

The use of the term has been around for decades - and yes, it was used by right wing racists then, too.

If you don't believe Poland existed in 1901 shouldn't you on principle refuse to post upon this thread which is after all in the "History of Poland" section of this forum?

Why? Polish history includes the history of the people - unless you believe that the Polans somehow magically changed into Polish people overnight.

So you think that the world has a collective "mind" whose judgement regarding the status of Poland supercedes that of the Polish people, and that is why you are both delusional and Polonophobic.

I think you have problems with the idea of sovereignty. Not a surprise, seeing as your own country has frequently abused it.

I am neither right wing nor racist.

Yeah, yeah. The term "Polonophobia" is used exclusively by right wing racists in Poland - what makes you different?

nor do I vote in Polish elections.

Don't have citizenship, huh?

In terms of international law and recognition (and according to the usual definition of sovereignty) - they were nothing but a minority living within Prussia. Nothing more, and the land certainly wasn't occupied.

As for "defiant" - I don't call a vast amount of collaboration with them "defiant".

Certainly, they rejected the annexation and considered it occupied - but that was in their mind, not in the world's mind.

(by the way : accusing someone of polonophobia when they quote facts is the domain of the right wing racist in Poland, Des - perhaps you might want to finally admit your LPR-love)

You are wrong. 1, 2, 3, 4 ...

They are wrong - occupation and annexation are two totally different things.

If you want to split hairs, it would be more appropriate to use the Germanic "anschluss" - the country was initially occupied by military forces, then formally annexed into Prussia. But in English, as the territory was part of Prussia and Poland's claims recognised by no-one - you simply cannot use the term "occupation".

This phrase should be always used instead 'the Polish occupation'.

Why? It wasn't occupied.

It might not be what Poles want to hear, but facts are facts.

USA, Canada / Polish-American mutilation of the Polish language [75]

Actually, I never heard the word Busha or Busia before my visits to PF. My Polish origins are from the Gniezno-Poznan area and we used Babcia in my family for what a grandmother is called in Polish.

Hmm - perhaps this starts to lend credibility to the theory that it comes from the East, then?
