News / Premier says no recession for Poland [148]

As for escaping recession, well what I believe he said was that he PREDICTS 3% growth next year. I guess it all depends on how much you believe in his predictions.

More interesting summaries which I can easily grasp, thanks TU5K and cms

News / Premier says no recession for Poland [148]

Personally I've seen zero signs of recession. I no absolutely nobody here who isn't working.

Thank you, Smurf

I am surprised that this thread has had such very little interest -- perhaps Poland doing well is no surprise to most, or others think it is too early to say that no recession or slump is likely.

News / Premier says no recession for Poland [148]

Was watching TV Trwam (yes, alright!!) this evening and on the News programme Mr T apparently said that the pessimists were wrong and Poland is to escape recession and any slow-down in the economy and growth etc.

Isn't this in stark contrast to what various news reports were saying a few months ago, or even more recently than that?

What are people's thoughts about this and the prospect of Poland continuing to experience growth, assuming it has? (I base this on Wrocław, which seems very busy, lots of new cars around, shopping malls busy again etc, except the electrical shops). That said, some people tell me they can't get work, etc etc.

What's the real situation -- as Tusk says, or does it vary from city to city and region to region? If it's all going well, why are PiS ahead in the polls, or is that a regular mid-term thing which has no significance when it comes to ballot day?

Life / Homosexuality in Polish Culture [231]

I am not a gay man but have noticed an increasing number of males and females in this city who probably are. Far fewer than the UK, but more are evident when I travel around than when I first came here 3 years ago. I have no issue at all with anyone's sexuality, by the way, it's not my business, but from a sociological point of view it is interesting to see the changes taking place in some Polish cities. For example, more gay people are evident (gay women too), and many more members of ethnic groups (in Wrocław, with a very marked increase in people who are of Oriental appearance).

I assume Oriental is still an inoffensive word to use!

Law / What banks are people using in Poland? [50]

Thanks, but I am getting increasingly curious as to the legality of declining me at the other banks so far. I probably will pop into ING, they haven't had a chance to decline me yet :o)

Law / What banks are people using in Poland? [50]

If you mean do I have a blue card, yes. I also have a reg address here. But, I don't really want to bother with complaints paperwork or arguing with branch managers. I was just wondering whether they're breaking any laws. It's not like I've been declined on a creditworthiness basis, it appears to be solely "Poles only" from the moment I inquire.

Law / What banks are people using in Poland? [50]

Post Office bank (Bank Pocsztowy) said nie to a Brit opening an account today. "Got to have a Polish ID card," said they lady at the counter, adding helpfully "he should go to another bank if he wants an account."

I was attracted to their account as it seemed to have no fees, unless I misunderstood the leaflet.

Is it legal under discrimination laws to turn away Brits/EU members who ask to open an account simply because they are not Polish (as was the stated reason today, yet again)? Serious question, not asked to provoke any rows or accusations of trolling. I just would like to know.

If anyone could check my Polish here and correct as necessary, thank you (original English below)

Due to the noise as discussed (please see administration letter attached for your records) I must now give notice that I will end the tenancy and vacate by the end of the month. I will forward meter readings to you, and at your earliest convenience please send me the final accounts to pay or deduct from the security deposit.

The advice I have received suggests a court action would take too long to process, and the lack of sleep and damage to my work and routine cannot wait several months. I hope you will understand.

Show them your certificate of residence as an EU citizen, that's all they need. If they don't understand it (most don't, to be fair) - tell them to get on the phone. For what it's worth, ING are well recommended.

Thank you, will probably pop in to ING. I have an ING account in the UK, but from a long time back when savings rates were good and pre-Barclays.

Very true. I've opened several personal and business accounts over the years without using any of those things. Just choose the right bank.

I will probably go for ING.

I went to the same bank some days later and another person was in charge and I got an account opened in 5 minutes.

Yes you're probably right. If I don't go for ING, I'll go to another branch of the bank I got the coffee (but no biscuits!) at. I won't bother complaining about the chap who told me "Poles only" as life's too short and he was probably just scared his English wasn't up to it perhaps. Whatever the reason, I find it more amusing than anything.

Well, might as well have a free coffee whilst receiving confirmation my foreign ar*e and custom is unwelcome, eh. A biscuit wouldn't have gone amiss either, but ho hum.

I agree, but I won't grass on him, he gave me a free coffee when I pointed to the machine, so maybe he was just having a silly half-hour, I'll let it go and just try another branch where they're more au fait (I hope!).

Law / What banks are people using in Poland? [50]

never have I known a EU resident refused a bank account in Poland, if you are registered in Poland you open a residents account, if you are not registered in Poland you open a non residents account.

I already have an account with one bank, but I want another. The first bank only wanted to see a passport (2010 that was).

I went into today's bank and simply asked to open an account. The very nice chap said to me "You can't open it here, you have to go to the around [he meant roundabout/rondo] and open there, there is BZWBK." To which I replied, "I don't want to open an account with them, I want to open an account here with your bank!"

"You cannot sorry, for Polish people only." was his reply. I asked him if he was sure and he said yes, and I'm not going to repeat myself as already posted above. Should I try another branch of 'E' or phone their HQ?

inwroclaw i have heard of this happening in a British bank with one of my students who was Spanish.it was purely down to the ignorance of the bank clerk and was in no way bank policy.

I dare say daft clerks can be found anywhere, but I said to today's "I know we don't live in a perfect world, but this sounds illegal to me, I'm an EU citizen." Anyway, prawda!

Law / What banks are people using in Poland? [50]

Visited a bank today to open another account, as I want somewhere to safely deposit a fairly modest but significant lump sum from England. I was told by them that if I am not Polish I can't have an account. I told them I have a pesel but they said I must have some sort of card, I assume they meant Poland ID card. Obviously I don't have one as I'm a Briton.

Do UK banks tell Polish people they can't open accounts there as they're not British? Just wondering? Is it even legal to say someone must be Polish, by the way?

Really nice man in the bank, so I didn't argue with him, he's just the messenger.

Which bank was it? Well, their name begins with E. I don't want to name them in case the mods would prefer I don't.

Real Estate / Expired Apartment Leases in Warsaw Poland [5]

I'm a bit lost, how is this different to, for example, a one year rental on an apartment? My contract says 1 month's notice (before the end of any month) is all that's needed. Why are some 3 months? Am I misunderstanding some difference?

I usually get along fine with my landlord and hope she won't keep my deposit, she's so minted that I don't know why she'd need to cheapen herself by behaving badly, but if she did I suppose I'd have to take her to court to get it back. That's one thing I don't like about renting here.

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

I would recomend trying small breveries. There is growing market of such beers and they usually are quite good.

+1

Frankly the market is growing so fast that it's difficult to keep up. Not that I'm complaining: the quality is going up even faster. As an example, this time last year Rowing Jack was in my mind the best beer in Poland; now it isn't even in the top five !

Interesting, and making me thirsty!

Law / E (electronic) Signatures - how do I get one in Poland? [3]

Until very recently, I'd not really heard of an e-signature. I have Googled it and although there are many hits, none explain to me exactly how to get one here in Polska.

Can anyone point me in the right direction and advise on what sort of fee I can expect to pay to obtain one for use with Polish bureaucratic departments?

Thank you

Law / Poland's ZUS - how much to register and later deregister? [17]

Nothing at all - you can even do it online if you get yourself an electronic signature. It's a remarkably painless process to register and unregister the company these days.

Not too sure what an e-signature is or who issues them but will look into it and the form you mentioned, thanks again !

I can't believe this situation has been going on since August when I first asked the question! Where is the time going? Sigh.

Anyway, this is another question if anyone knows:

An accountant said that if I start a business and start paying ZUS at the introductory rate of 410PLN for 2 years, I lose that introductory rate of 410PLN if I cease the business in the first 2 years. In other words, that I get just one crack at running a business at the 'bargain' price 410PLN for ZUS. If that's correct, then it means a business owner may be inclined to keep going for a while longer so as not to lose the 'bargain' introductory rate of ZUS. But, it also means that a person can't easily start a business when they have some work lined up, then suspend it when they don't, thus saving money on ZUS and accountancy fees.

Correct or misinformation?

Anyone with knowledge on this, please post.

Law / Poland's ZUS - how much to register and later deregister? [17]

Thanks for that, appreciated.

Am I right in thinking the state itself does not charge a registration and (inevitably) deregistration fee?
Would an accountant typically charge extra for registering and degistering me in addition to their monthly fee for doing my books? I'd guess they would.

Law / Poland's ZUS - how much to register and later deregister? [17]

I have the prospect of some self-employed work for a month or two, although not sure yet if I'm going to get the green light

I will need to get a NIP and pay ZUS.

How much does Poland charge to register for ZUS and get a NIP number?
And how much do they charge to deregister ?
I think I have to file a monthly statement with ZUS, too ?

Moderator/Member Wroclaw posted a link on another thread to some figures but I was a bit lost to understand it even with a translation. Can anyone summarise it for me, please ?

Travel / Live cameras over Poland [21]

pawian,

please, write a small amount about what viewers might expect to see.

To aid the visually impaired as well as the curious, I guess.

At about this time of the evening, a few lasses hanging around giving out leaflets to Poles' pole dancing clubs, and probably a few drunk Brits from somewhere like Brentwood on a stag weekend posing by the statues. Check back in an hour for an eccentric, solitary German tourist videoing the busking musicians outside Spiz.

I might have seen them in either one of the boys' toys type of shops in one of the malls, or at Fenwick which is in Wroc's city centre (a department store).

Until I can remember for sure, maybe think about mail order -- twojbrowar.pl/prestashop/pl/ or check out Allegro online auctions

Real Estate / Stronger zloty - potential driver for Poland's property market [42]

I think most economists predict bigger growth, not recession in the future.

Quite a few commentators including one from the London School of Economics don't seem quite so cheerful about Poland's prospects.

blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2013/07/08/poland-recession/

articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-06-13/news/sns-rt-us-poland-rostowskibre95c062-20130612_1_finance-minister-jacek-rostowski-poland

Even if Poland stays out of recession, economists say it is hard to see where recovery can come from.

In previous slowdowns, exports to the European Union have restored growth, but those markets are struggling too.

Who is going to be right?
