Love / "going to dinner with my sis..." - approaching a Polish girl, help needed [46]

Thats what I meant by shock therapy previously but there are some retarded people in this forum who can not figure it out.

your shock therapy may well backfire straight into your face - she may get an impression that you are a womaniser and then you may get crossed out forever in her book

just a warning

Do not put all of your eggs in one basket.

this strategy is not good in a romantic relationship - perhaps only when you are looking for quick sex

UK, Ireland / Recommend a courier/transport - Poland to UK [7]

have you ever used the likes of DHL, UPS, FedEx they all have branches in Poland - my guess is they are reliable if expensive

fedex.com/pl_english/
dhl.com.pl/en.html
ups.com/content/pl/en/index.jsx

there are cheaper options that you can use at your risk - let me know if you are interested

Language / Chodzic versus Isc. When and why? [18]

from the grammatical point of view chodzić is a frequentative of iść - it means that it is used when the action of going somewhere is repeated (mostly)

are you going to school? = idziesz do szkoły?
do you go to school? = chodzisz do szkoły?

it is a bit simplistic explanation as there are some more subtleties to the topic

Life / Cheapest Way to Ship a Big Box from Krakow to Barcelona ? [11]

there used be an alternative before - I used it to ship a parcel from London to Gdańsk back in 2004 - Polish coach companies used to allow shipment of parcels that then had to be picked up by someone at the arrival of the coach

I checked that there are direct coaches from Kraków to Barcelona - maybe you should talk to the drivers - the Sindbad coach departs two times a week (saturdays and wednesdays) at 11 o'clock from here: KRAKÓW, Dworzec MDA, ul. Bosacka 18

or you can call Sindbad infoline 801 22 33 44 - they should talk English on the infoline - and ask if they accept parcel shipments

Life / Cheapest Way to Ship a Big Box from Krakow to Barcelona ? [11]

I have checked one of the parcel services - europaczka.pl - they claim to be cheap - but shipping your box according to them will cost you circa 300 PLN (they have an online calculator)

check other parcel services - DHL, UPS, FedEx

Travel / Which city is better to visit: Warsaw or Krakow? [169]

Remember to dress well for New Year's Eve - the locals certainly will.

well maybe she thinks about spending New Year's Eve outside - there is an outdoor New Year's eve concert and celebration both in Warsaw and in Kraków - however you should dress adequately to the weather (it can get pretty cold) and bring your own booze -

Law / Purchasing a Vehicle in Poland and Shipping it to the U.S. [8]

Would I 100% need Polish citizenship to purchase a vehicle in Poland for the purpose of directly shipping it overseas?

Hi Matthew, I don't know the laws in question tbh but I have some thoughts - Polish people constantly import cars from further west in Europe especially from Germany - they don't need German citizenship to do it - what you would like to do is to import a vehicle from Poland to the US - what I believe Poland has very similar law as for exporting vehicles as most European countries -

Next question - upon purchasing the vehicle (and registering it), can I put down a U.S. address on the registration form or do I need an address in Poland?

similarily Poles who buy vehicles in Germany don't need a German address to do it

my other thought is that there might be additional paperwork for the vehicles you would like to import as these might be classified as historical vehicles

Travel / Holiday in Poland - do I need to learn Polish? [26]

I don't know to be honest - never been there - I guess thought that with a little luck you will find some younger people who know English and will help you out - Lublin is not as much a touristy destination as Kraków or Warsaw to add a little caveat

UK, Ireland / Do people in Poland live "better" than here in the UK? [150]

You're talking about the ability to go somewhere illegally

walking and cycling through forest and countryside in Poland is not illegal man - I don't know where you get this from

the foot or cycle paths you seen in Poland on maps and in the countryside are meant to show people the places of some natural value

UK, Ireland / Do people in Poland live "better" than here in the UK? [150]

you don't have the right to walk through forests and farmland except on notified (scarce) trails

you are exaggerating at least if not giving outright false information - most of the forests in Poland are state-owned and you can go there on foot or cycle at your whim - however mechanical vehicles are not allowed to enter most of the forest roads (but people do it illegally anyway)

as for farmland - noone will chase you away when you wander about the roads (or cycle) in the countryside - you can even cross/walk into fields/meadows and noone will mostly pay any attention

History / Why HMG (Her Majesty's Government) abandoned Poland to the Soviets [30]

just to throw in my two cents - I don't believe the British had much say when Yalta arrangements were made - it was Americans who were leading the alliance and it was personally Roosevelt who fell for Stalin and held Stalin to be a democrat - in Teheran Churchill even insisted that the European ally front should be open in the Balkans so that the Balkan and Central European countries could be liberated by allies but Stalin strongly opposed and Roosevelt just gave in to Stalin - maybe i got something wrong so feel free to correct me

History / Why HMG (Her Majesty's Government) abandoned Poland to the Soviets [30]

Pogroms

there ware just a handful of them you hate monger and most of them happened in very specific circumstances

Poles were fighting in all armies of the states that partitioned Poland - all of them - Russia, Austro-Hungary and Kaiser Germany - it was this or an execution platoon

in 1938 Poles only took back what Czechs stolen from Poland using the fact the Poland was fighting the bolsheviks on eastern front in 1920 - the region was inhabited by vast Polish majority - after the second world war the region went through massive czechisation but there are still people there who speak Polish at home

Poles in the Nazi Party? - just as I said before - just your imagination

Language / Some suggestions for Polish soft consonants and difficult word pronunciations [17]

sounds ń, ś, ź, ć, dź.

at least ń should pose little problem - Spanish has it, French has it, Italian has it - think Espańa, chamapgne, cognac - even the word canyon in English has I am being told

ź and dź are the most difficult sounds for foreigners - even fellow Slavs often can't pronounce it

and we era told that "ć" is closer to the English "ch" in cheese.

the English ch sound is somewhere in between of Polish cz and ć the same goes to the English sh sound (and Polish sz, ś)

Life / City, County etc. structure of Poland? [3]

Voievodship (województwo) - is the largest subdivision in Poland

then there is powiat which is equivalent to German Kreis if you know what Kreis is

the thing is that in certain states counties are the size of Polish voievodships (as say Texas is the size of the whole Poland if not bigger) and in some smaller states counties are not considerably bigger than a big Polish powiat

Language / kilka vs troche ? [12]

if mam piwo is ( nomitive) why is mam troche piwa genitive ?

firstly in case of 'mam piwo' the actual case of piwo is Accusative it just happens to be the same in form as Nominative for piwo (and many neuter gender nouns) - it is because mam requires noun in Accusative

for your own use you can think trochę=some amount/number of - then you've got a sentence 'I have some amount of beer'- you should now clearly see why beer/piwo is in Genetive (of beer = Gen. of piwo = piwa)
