USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

in my 20 years here I haven't seen one single instance of grape growers heating their grapes any time of the year. Not once. And I drive by those fields almost every day.

I'm suprised by that, the microclimate must be unusual.

The gulf stream keeps us supplied with rain all year round.

Winter -6.50C (avg)
Summer 25.76C (avg)
Spring 7.29C (avg)

That looks like my kind of climate. I like distinct seasons or more accuratly, the changeing of the seasons. The one thing I really dislike is wind, warm or cold I just dont like it.

I have tried and liked ice wine. There is a similar dessert wine made from Noble rot not as pricey as $40 a glass but just as good. Afro could get some of either when she goes to Berlin.

Complete and utter bullcrap.

Not quite. Heaters are often used to protect the flower buds from frost damage in spring.
But it would be silly to heat an uncovered area and as you said ruinously expensive.

The traditional heaters in France are called Smudge Pots.

News / Giant Jesus Rising in Świebodzin ( Tallest in world ) [323]

They are building a big Jesus with private money, it will probably be good for the town....its something to look at. You dont have to be Catholic or other Christian to like it. I am not of any religion but do like looking at cathedrals, churches graveyards etc.

The only question I would have is how would I feel living next to it. Provided it wasnt casting too much of a shadow on my garden and had good foundations I wouldnt care.

History / Poland - Scotland, the untold story... [75]

the guy is a really good historian

Neil Oliver Yeah, he is a good presenter. Niall Ferguson on the other hand is a revisionist prick.

UK, Ireland / The more subtle differences: Ireland/Britain v Poland [310]

I tell you something that is not brought so much to light, is the prehistory.
In Ireland the place is littered with portal dolmens, ring forts and sites like Newgrange.
In England you have Stone Henge and other megalithic structures but here it's not shown so much or maybe I just miss it, i can't deny that could be a factor but I do actively look for it...

Most of the Megalithic structures are dotted around the European coast, I wonder if the Baltic coast has many examples?

Love / 'Battered husbands' - still a taboo subject in Poland [387]

As for titillation, evidently I get mine from other means instead of watching fictional skinny women beating up men twice their size.

These scenes are meant for the Dads and nothing to do with demeaning Men.

Love / 'Battered husbands' - still a taboo subject in Poland [387]

Even movies show 90 lb women beating up 250 lb men, all for the sake of equality of course.

Or titillation, which it cant be of course as it would make a mockery of your theory.

History / Polish martyrology during WW2 - today`s monuments [54]

Time for some to grow some balls

There he sat,
preparing himself for battle,
what he was about to do was not easy,
but he was clear,
his mind made up
and without fear,
and with a steady hand,
he pressed post message.

Life / Is Poland split into two religions: catholicism and non-believers? [103]

I have already praised JPII elsewhere.

And for some unknown reason managed to drag Ian Paisley into it.

People cast aspersions on the role of the RCC with Islam but I fail to see where they are coming from

Yet you saw fit to post obvious Anti Catholic propaganda.(I'll not even go with the rest of what I'm thinking about this sentence).

Seanus I think you are at heart a good person.
If you want to explore these issues you must be extra careful. Your history of, how shall I put this, "unorthodox questioning" will always lead to dead ends.

A legalistic mind is not necessarily the best for tackling philosophical points.

People make such issues their life.

Like DariuszTelka;)

Care to quote some of that anti-Catholic propaganda?

Almost all the videos and the Swedish radio program where they said that The Catholic Church invented Islam or some such nonsense immediately spring to mind.

Are you really so defensive?

Not in the slightest, I am not a Catholic.

I dont have to be a Jew to dislike anti Semitism:)

I think that your obsession with the Catholic Church is bordering on the offensive. Using the Polish psyche as a smokescreen.

I have noted that you have recently toned down your "critique" of the Catholic Church after posting anti Catholic propaganda, this is a good thing.

I would take the same stance if you were posting about almost any other belief system.

They follow the process of contrition/penance/salvation in order to show this working.

You seem to be thinking yourself round in circles, a dog chasing its tail?

Reading the above; are you saying that Catholicism is a dynamic journey while Calvinism is a smug auto defining thing?

Obsessing about Catholics is pointless, just pick a belief system that you are comfortable with and dont worry about what others believe.

Simples.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

As a smoker I like that we have a ban in packed city bars. I do miss it on the occasional Saturday afternoon and in country pubs though. Smoking in bars is good if you are the only one doing it.

was a bartender at the time just across the river in New Jersey

Mulligans in Hoboken by any chance?

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

I have not moved to Alaska after all. It looks pretty civilized when I looked out the window;)

So what is all this talk about bears;)

Polish boots

Watch out for when the "Zubrs" are charging down the streets then you will understand that the boot thing is a necessity:)
