Work / TEFL Teacher training from Poland? [18]

Be careful of online courses without an observed teaching component - they are OK as well as a CELTA but are not a substitute and will severely limit your employability if you have only this

Some schools and organisations don't accept on-line certificates (I think PASE is one of them, for what it's worth).

Mega huge chocolate easter eggs!
Cheap christmas cards (not the postcards, I feel cheap sending them!)
Haggis (admittedly a limited number of people might be interested)

UK, Ireland / No job unless you're Polish [201]

In the 50s people of my country elected a very conservative, pro Catholic political party. Does that mean they supported child abuse?

That would depend on if it was in the party manifesto.

Life / Polish "Mall Girl" Culture? [125]

They behave in a particular way and they have habits. But I don't think they are "cultured".

Ah, that's adifferent thing. There I agree with you.

It will be interesting to see what the Daily Mail (Ireland) make of that and the attempt to change the blasphemy law.

Jezus feckin' mother of god on a stick, what feckin' blasphemy is there in Ireland?

It will be interesting to see what the Daily Mail (Ireland)

As lonmg as he's not Polish, they'll be OK.

The next Irish president will probably be David Norris an African born openly Gay senator who speaks with an English accent.

Well, the Irish love Gay Byrne, so why not a Gay Born?

Piotr i Pawel sells it! I was mystified when I saw it...

where's that? Weget a few occasional brands in some shops here in Olsztyn, but it's generally medium, mainstream stuff. I'd kill for some Wenslydale too.

Magners or Bulmers cider

Ooooh, I can feel the hangover already!

Things like t bags, walkers crisps, gravy powder, branstons pickle, the stuff that you cant find easily in Poland. There is a site that covers this but they specialise in the whole world, if somebody concentrated on Poland you should be able to undercut them and offer a superior service.

Cheddar cheese! Cheshire cheese! marmite... ugh, did I really say that?

I also think it is a good idea.

I remember living in Glasgow there was almost one on each street corner in some places. Obviously, in Poland many people have access to a washing machine or a grandmother, but for tourists, students etc, I think it'd be good. It would probably take some time for the culture to develop, tho.

The other thing is those big dry cleaning machines (like dry-clean tumblers). Cheaper than taking two or three pairs of trousers etc to a dry-cleaning shop.

I edited, I thought it was to presumptuous of me to say what is ''correct'' for another country.

Oh Dear! That's why you're not British, Sean ;-)

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

I don't know if it is still, but certainly in 19th Century it was thought Finnish was a peasant language. This was one of the reasons why Lonrott's kalevala was so important, because it showed Finns had a long culture and the language was capable of handling an epic poem.

I bet she'd take her time signing that one, "Efter mey loooong holidey abroad!"

I was under the impression that she had the last say on everything (although rarely went against her government).

Sponsoring is not exactly prostitution.

It's a thin line. I remember hearing the argument for going to a prostitute, "What's the difference between that and buying a girl drinks all night... just that the prozzie is cheaper and you know you'll get what you want."

what????
Is church responsible for prostitution? LOL

Well, you might ask the choirboy where he got his mobile phone...

Firstly: Do the author of this thread know what does a world "culture" mean?

Do you?

Culture has three main meanings, one of which is a shared system of practices and beliefs, behaviour etc. which are charcateristic of a particular group (and arguably maintain its identity).

These girls (and boys) presumably have their own codes of practice, slang, etc. Therefore it is possible to refer to it as a culture.

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

Poland already has a much higher college graduate rate & higher literacy rate than Germany.
It is only time.

True, but you mention Ireland getting rich, don't forget that the Irish were considered "the Blacks of Europe" (If you believe the Commitments film) and there are legions of jokes about them. BUT this kind of thing arguably helped make education important in Ireland. Likewise, the hardships of Poland have arguably made education an important thing (OK, they tried to mess it up with Giertych a few years ago).

Yes, the West will get left behind becasue it often smugly sits on it's laurels and thinks the world should accept what it gives. The British had this with Japan. There were once over 50 makes of British motorcycle... and now?

BTW, Arnold Schwarzenegger made millions from real-estate deals before he became a film star. Part of the reason, he's said, was because many American businessmen just thought he was some thick meathead from the Austrian mountains, and they dropped their guard.

So let the Polack jokes continue and you'll be able to dominate the world!

Work / Average monthly salary in Poland is around 1000 PLN (few hundred bucks). [387]

- If you take into account the social insourance as well as the taxes then the taxation rate here is c.a. 40%. Which - ofcourse ought to be reduced - if the taxation made by the social insourence agency (ZUS) would be reduced by 1/2 then a lot of people would come out of the black economy..

Worth considering that in many jobs (even low paid ones) the employers want the workers to be self-employed (one-man firm) so they don't have to pay ZUS etc. That automatically costs the worker over 800 a month in ZUS.

Not one person has accepted!

Of course not, they have probably never actually thought what it means to want to, be prepared to, or feel like you have to leave the comfort of home to find work.

Where are you based?

UK, Ireland / Which country is more corrupt - Poland or the UK? [35]

I always thought Tusk lost a chance to launch a full torpedo attack on kaczynski during one of the pre-election debates.

Kaczynski laughed that he'd had the police watching LPR and Samoobrona from before they went into coalition. I thought Tusk should have asked him why he was prepared to go into coalition with people he thought were criminals and why he was prepared to let such people be in major positions in the government if this was his view.

True.

What I was thinking of was the baked bean war, a few years ago, where beans were down to about 9p a tin. People loved it. However, the reason supermarkets were able to do this was because the farms supplying them were using a huge amount of illegal labour from Eastern Europe.

UK, Ireland / Considering opening a Polish restaurant in the UK. [9]

I'd hazard a guess that Polish food isn't 'exotic' enough for the average Brit.

Apart from Bigos (which man y would run screaming from when they heard the word 'cabbage' or 'sauerkraut') and pierogi, I don't know that there's much to interest the average brit. Also, one of the beauties of polish food for me is that it is basically 'peasant food' (and I mean that in a nice way) which would traditionally be pretty cheap. Not sure cheapness is always a winner.

I remember a Slovenian resturant in Glasgow. Fantastic food but it didn't last long. I don't think as many Poles would eat there regularly for you to make a huge profit (although I could be wrong).

So if a member of the baltic states, whom had no english or polish, applied, would he get the job?

Perhaps, because he wouldn't be able to read the DM and know he shouldn't apply.

UK, Ireland / No job unless you're Polish [201]

I have never seen that tabloid taken as serious anywhere in England as it is on these forums.

It's probably because it is one of the publications on the yahoo news site these days. Almsot the first thing you see.

IF the company has broken the law, they must be brought to justice and the appropriate penalties applied. Both locals and legal foreign workers are being shafted and it is a disgrace.

Funny thing is that the sign they show doesn't say "You must speak Polish", it says "English not demanded".

Somebody needs to buy him a map of the world.

Ah, but if you're british, you know most of the world is actually British (at heart).

Most British people know about the Daily Mail and their agenda, don't they?

In the same way most Germans knew about Mein kampf and it's agenda!
