Travel / Private small pools? [Warsaw/Krakow/Olsztyn] [10]

The nudist beach in Warsaw is a great place in summer and totally free, but if he has issues about what people wear, he'll need to spend plenty of money.

Travel / Private small pools? [Warsaw/Krakow/Olsztyn] [10]

The Intercontinental one is wonderful. The Hyatt in Warsaw is classy and sometimes does good deals - but hotel pools are never that cheap. If it's in summer, there are a few places round Zalew Zegrzynski with outdoor pools - no idea how much it would cost to hire the whole thing.

Travel / Old town Krakow, is it dangerous during Night time? [42]

My aunt was robbed at her first week in LA at high noon on the junction when she was sitting in her car

That's sad to hear.

As a whole, Polish cities are safe provided you stay away from the poorest district.

Food / Which are the most frequently made Polish foods? [8]

They're a staple of many households.

Lots of salads too, though not always very nice ones, dripping in liquid.

Alsp placki, which are easy to make and a lot of hot-dog type sausages - produced in high volume and sold by the thousand.

Australia / Australian citizen wanting to go to Poland for as long as possible - needs Polish Visa [49]

Or Belgium too for that matter. But as the law stands at the moment other EU countries make their own rules. If however you have long-term residence in a Schengen state (however that is obtained) you can spend up to 3 months in any other Schengen state. And since there are no border controls, it's quite hard for the authorities to know where you actually are.

Of course working, which generates a tax liability, is a whole different matter.

Real Estate / The cost of a furnished apartment near Warsaw downtown are high? Why? [42]

I know, the same place I took a few years ago, has gone way up.

If you mean that place at the corner of Poznanska and Hoza, it's a holiday flat - short term lets only.

For normal long term rentals, the prices are very stable. Have a look on Gumtree.

Law / Moving to Poland and start a business [16]

/Doncaster

Wow. How many of us ex-Donny people are there in Poland? I can think of 3 in Warsaw.

We're colonising the place.

News / Poland Unemployment: Nobody protests, because people are leaving [30]

We have system set by commies secret police and people behind the scene pulling strings. So called elite in Poland is mostly Soviet or working in that system set up by Soviets.

That's become less and less true as the years go by.

people with their money and connections need to go

I'll wish you good luck with that one but don't get your hopes up.

Law / Bank accounts taxed by up to 10%. Can it happen in Poland? [150]

And of course the day traders made a killing out of the Europe-wide temporary drop in share prices both by shorting them quickly as soon as the news broke and from the brief bull market when things got back to normal.

The problem with jobs for young people or lack of jobs in general wasn't caused by Tusk

Indeed - they inherited a mess.

they managed to convince people here that being a politician is not about being a manager in a company called Poland but some damn messianic role

There's actually something in that.

People also do not protest when they don't believe in any possible improvement and this is the case in Poland where most people are apathic.

There's something in that - to protest, what would they actually protest to get? Something concrete and specific? No - there isn't any clear goal. Because the situation's terrible and the whole system must go? No - it isn't bad enough for that.

But Poland remains one of the quietest countries in the region. Nobody protests, because people are leaving.

Not so much because people are leaving but because the Poles (many, anyway) are essentially conformist and exercise freedom withinn constraints. That and the fact that they (some, anyway) are very loyal to their countrry but don't have quite the same concept of loyal opposition as Western European countries.

It looks like the EU has won the ' Med Gas' confrontation with Russia in CY.

Thank heavens for small mercies.

The only war is in your head. Gazprom owns a British gas company, was that a war too?

The commercial cold war is only just beginning.

News / 18 Miners trapped near Wroclaw [14]

if it appears there are any chances of obtaining energy

Remove the word 'energy' and substitute with the word 'money'. Also add extreme environmental damage that will last for generations.

But I don't understand how authorities allowed people to work and use that dangerous method somewhere at the same time.

Money.

This accident is just another reminder that rush to use some unexplored ways to produce energy is too dangerous and do not worth our efforts.

Spot on. Shale gas fracking is something that Europe does not need.

UK, Ireland / Polish Vodka, spirituous - available in the UK? [9]

Very, very bad idea

Agreed. People buy that stuff to make fruit nalewka with - that and sterilise surgical instruments. It isn't for drinking. The only people who drink it are one step away from drinking meths.

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

That's not what I hear from people who actually do recruiting.

This is true.

Indeed: Polish girls.

This is also true.

As I suspect you know, I was recruiting teachers in PL for years and hardly ever got CVs from female native speakers - they are certainly in demand not least because most learners have had plenty of male native speakers over the years.

I still strongly disagree. She would be best advised, as I have already done so, to forget about doing a CELTA

No. A CELTA opens certain doors not just now, but later in her career - a big question hangs over anyone in EFL who can't be bothered to get even a basic qualification.

A friend who has a few years' experience as a Teaching Assistant (the English term for 'teacher's aid') had to get one before working - otherwise his options would have been limited to the arse-end of the business.

Would you shell out money to send your kids to a language school where the teachers can't be bothered to do a quick and fairly cheap certification?
