Travel / I discovered Poland - a nice country [62]

@Atch: "lol"! We have already mentioned this in PF and probably reason why they are always sick. Now, it's not cold (I don't know what the temperature is but it's what it should be in Poland in October) and there are a lot of people already dressed like in the middle of the Siberia winter.

@Roger: +1

I have not seen Vegeta and sh##ts of the kind at home in years. There are a lot of commercials on Polish tv for this kind of craps and it looks like Poles use them in about everything.

@Atch: for sure, one can cook good things with limited amount of ingredients but probably more than what the normal Polish diet allows. Basically, Polish "cooking" is limited to 10 or at most 12 ingredients and as a result, recipes are most limited, repetitive and soon become boring. A few years ago, when very little food from the West, I really suffered (fortunately I love potatoes ;)). If more money available (in stores, now we can find great things), it would be better but also need to educate Poles.

As to "liver problems", that's true that on Polish tv channels there are tons of commercials with women who can't eat large slices of cakes because of their "liver" but more seriously, most Poles have trouble because they drink too much and this is so of course principally among men..

Besides too much salt, too much sugar, too much fat, don't forget the industrial craps such as Vegeta and consorts that Poles are crazy about.

It's weird but now I have started to believe that the North American diet may even be healthier than the Polish diet ;). If Poles look so old, it must have something to do too with the way of eating.

@Delph: of course, a lot of Poles now buy a lot of "Westernized" craps as such as frozen pizzas, chips and consorts, which are new in Poland, but I meant the typical Polish diet which is unhealthy and repetittive. In order to eat properly, we also need to eat a huge variety of things.

Because of a combination of many things (economics, climate, traditions..) Poles don't eat well. Of course, a few recipes are tasty but their number can be counted on the fingers of one hand and so is the number of ingredients. Not to mention too much salt, sugar, fat... Poles are on the whole unhealthy (just 1 example, a lot of them are sick the whole winter every winter) and I am sure the no.1 reason is poor food.

Have you noticed how much older do most Poles look when they reach for instance their 50's? Only the very rich look good. I'm sure bad food is the cause hereof.

@Atch; also a problem with ... money. Most Poles can only buy crap. I very rarely see people buying for instance eggplant... Most Poles have a very basic and limited diet not only because they don't know better but also (mostly?) because they cannot afford better.

As to liver problems, it's because of the booze

Not only too much salt but also too much sugar, also not enough iodine (= a lot of Poles have serious problems with thyroid gland, including very young kids), not enoug vitamins and minerals, very limited choice of vegetables and fruit, very little, if any at all, fish...

Most Poles eat garbage and their health and look can tell (past 45, they look very old).

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

PO would fit me if they stopped "worrying" only about the rich and start "worrying" about the whole Polish population. What I like though about PO is that they don't bother us with religion.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

@Whocares: I tend to agree. I really hate PiS because of their relationship with the Church, because of their homophobia and more generally because of their backwards societal positions but I also think that PO would sell Poland's a..ss. to the devil for a few extra coins.

Personally I do not care about whom shall win on 10 days as my life won't change any bit and if I were Polish, I would vote NEITHER for PiS NOR for PO. Yet, I think that after a few years in ANY country, it's good to change as people start getting fed up with status quo.

Anyhow, any local goverment has very little power in EU so no sweat ;). No need to get emotional over an election! ;)

Travel / Getting from Wrocław to Lubin [17]

@Pink: you'll have to ask people otherwise most probably impossible to find it. I won't even talk about the way it is outside of the cities, it's just a luck game and every time (fortunately not often) I need to travel this way, I seriously panick because if I cannot find stop, I miss bus and often the following bus is hours later but from the airport, you should have more ;).

Good luck!

PS: Sorry to sound "pessimistic", but this is Polish reality.

I obviously mean ZTM and not ZTP ;)

Travel / Getting from Wrocław to Lubin [17]

The problem is that it's rather difficult to find bus stops for these mini-buses. Even in Warsaw, it's terrible (it's ok if in Centrum but not anywhere else in the city) They usually do not have any particular stops and first time best to leave home very early in order to find stop ;). Even in Warsaw, I have noticed that some private (mini) buses stop at some ZTP stops and unless you know, impossible to find since NO sign whatsover. Once I had to take one of these buses to go to some 40 km away from Warsaw and by pure hazard, I found bus "stop" (no sign whatsoever) in front of a pharmacy because at the time a bus from the company I was to use was just arriving, otherwise it would have been impossible to guess....

Travelling in Poland is "easy" in theory but pretty difficult in reality.

News / Is it honourbale for ex-presidents to commercialise themselves? [12]

@Delph: the "nouveaux riches" are for sure obsessed with money but their social class represents a very small % of the Polish society. When I talk about Poles, I refer to the "average Pole" and not to tiny minorities. Yes, most Poles are modest, not greedy and can be shocked...

@Polsyr: We are not talking about notorious crooks such as ... Berl...usc..ni and Sar...kozy but of former Polish presidents who mean to make extra money. I am just saying that in a country like Poland, it is shocking because it does not correspond to the way most people are. I am sure most Poles shall regard that as pure greed. Poland is a conservative and religious country.

News / Is it honourbale for ex-presidents to commercialise themselves? [12]

@Polsyr: Poland (and more largely Europe) is not to be confused with the USA. In Europe we don't do things the way they do in the US. Charitative work is most important in the US whereas in Europe we expect States to take care of all welfare programs. The article posted by Pol3 does not reflect Polish and even European reality and therefore can shock. This has nothing to do with charity, they just want to make money. Sorry, but in a country like Poland this is shocking. Komorowski and Wałęsa, as former presidents are more than well taken care of by the tax payers so it's a little bit.. .. deplaced. I am sure most Poles will be shocked.

Whoever they may be, greedy politicians and those only concerned about their image are sickening. When they choose politics, their only concern should be to serve the people they represent. I know I am naive .... ;)

News / Polish people's criticism of European Union [104]

As a matter of fact, in Germany things are getting worse than I had thought: the Bavarian goverment want to take Merkel to court....(Gazeta Wyborcza, among others). The way it seems to be going bezirk first of all in Germany but in all the other 27 countries, I would not be suprised that EU shall take in NO refugee but instead install camps in 3rd countries, just like H. Clinton had come up with until German Mama came up with her "brilliant" idea. No country can afford the cost be economically, socially and politically (several local elections these next months in the EU: today in Vienna and the extreme right wing is supposed to do very well (if not more ....) as the refugee issue was the no.1 topic in the campaign, then in December parliamentary elections in Spain and regional elections in France where Front National is to win 1 or 2 regions).....

Of course, a lot of people are to be protected from war and dictatorships but obviously the merkelian bs way is the worst solution.

As to Poland, I seriously doubt that PiS goverment are going to be as obedient as Tusk and EW on the matter. I am sure that PO's position is going to cost them a lot of votes on 25th.

Once more, Germany mean to destroy Europe! ....

News / Polish people's criticism of European Union [104]

@Maf: it's not a German-Polish problem but a German-27 EU countries problem. Not only Poland, no country -including Germany -can afford to accommodate millions of newcomers who will need to be spoonfed.

Germany has never been against Poland (it's high time for Poles to stop being paranoid) considering Germany's okS to give Poland billions of Euros and if Tusk got his job, it was only because of Merkel and of his lack of charisma (EU needs obedient little doggies)

As to Poland, since PiS are to come in office in 2 weeks and are against taking in migrants, I suppose that they will cancel EK's deal with Merkel. It makes sense to me but is it legally possible?

News / Polish people's criticism of European Union [104]

I have just read that Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote that Merkel and EU's commission are considering a "Soli-Zuschlag" in EU in order to help financing migrants. The tax would be on gas or on VAT throughout EU, including of course Poland.

As I have often said, OK to help true war refugees and to help them in a coherent manner but I am against millions of people (most often not controlled) coming from all over the 3rd world. Merkel is completely insane and I hope the Germans are going to get rid of her very soon. According to medias, Germans are not too happy with situation. Who the h... does the woman think she is? A new führer? Enough with das ... Reich!

No, EU canNOT accommodate millions of newcomers and anybody saying the opposite is mentally sick. No country can afford to.

Germany want them so they need to be sent to Germany and I doubt that EU citizens would agree on a "migrant tax".

PS: @Maf; of course no migrant wants to come to Poland (I don't blame them) but as Mama Merkel has decided that all the 27 other countries shall, all the puppet governments will obey. Why do you think Tusk got his job if not because he's Merkel's little chihuahua....

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

@Pol: it's clear as to PiS's and PO's % but in most polls, they expect ZL, Kukiz, PSL and 1 or 2 other(s) to make it. What strikes me is poor score to be expected from PO or does it mean that most Poles are fed up of them and will vote AGAINST PO?

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

I don't remember whether in GW or in tvp.pl info, I have read that there would be a 20% difference between PiS and PO (it's really huge). Anyhow, the only reliable source is the way Poles vote and not what a few expats think/hope. Although the huge majority of the people I mingle with are close to PO, they all believe in PiS's victory as it seems to them as "logical' (further to the May election). I am neither for PiS nor PO but it looks clear to me that we"ll have PiS in 2 weeks. I also believe that the current's government accepting to take in refugees shall hurt PO some more....

Work / Translation Company in Poland - would it be profitable here? [12]

True, Polsyr, and don't forget that in order to translate, high skills and relevant diplomas are demanded. A translated text should look as if it were written by a native.

True too, in Warsaw, there are a few translators who've been around for ages and who get most work and the rest of translators do translate occasionally and have to do other things in order to eat.. There is no room for newcomers.

True too re languages other than English. Also other languages since "rarer" and also more difficult are paid more than English.

Work / Translation Company in Poland - would it be profitable here? [12]

In Warsaw and I assume in all big cities in Poland there are already too many translators and only a few of them do make a living.

As to proofreading, it is necessary to be a native speaker of language to proofread in order to dare working as a proofreader and I seriously doubt OP can proofread 5 or 6 FOREIGN languages. I do occasional proofreading (in my native language) and no need to say, that it is very difficult. Sometimes I don't understand what the he..ll the translator means since no sense in target language.

A good translation must be accurate and makes sense to natives of target language and therefore if no adequate skills, no need to bother claiming to work in the field. Translating and/or proofreading is not a mere search of unknown vocabulary in Google ;) and putting words next to each other. I've seen terrible translations made by socalled professional translators in Warsaw. Translating/proofreading also implies a thorough native knowledge of culture of the target language.

Of course, almost anybody's grandma can open a translation agency but to make a living income out of it is another story ;).

News / Polish people's criticism of European Union [104]

You are da... right! To Poland and consorts! How many jobs lost in the West because companies have moved to cheaper labor countries? In the West, all media are full of examples every day and it's still going on. Companies are not stupid, better for their profits to hire a cheaper Pole, Slovak, Czech, Rumanian, .... rather than a Belgian, French, Dane, German... who demands better salaries and conditions. If anti-EU political parties are so strong (and sometimes even in office) in Western Europe, it is NO coincidence. Developing Eastern Europe IS impoverishing Western Europe and needless to say, most people in Western Europe are against EU.

Unfortunately it is not only in EU is we only consider all those American IT companies settling in Poland and hiring Indians, Pakistanis and the like instead of hiring Americans back home for salaries several times higher.

@Dgy.... ;): you are absolutely right! Only the socalled "elites" are in favor of EU but the "normal people" are almost all totally against EU. In France, for instance, in 2005, 55% of voters rejected the EU's constitution but never mind, Sarkozy got the constitution approved by the (French) Parliament in 2007. In Ireland and in the Netherlands, referenda were cancelled several times because the results did not suit ... EU. It would sound like a joke if not destroying countries and their people...

@Gregy: I have started being very busy so no time to even take a quick look at Polish media but strangely noone among the people I meet do talk about it. Do you have RELIABLE sources? Strange enough that foreign media don't talk about it (serious enough a matter for medias even abroad).

If so, PO are even dumber that I had thought.

When I have a few minutes off, I'll try to find something on the net.

News / Polish people's criticism of European Union [104]

of course EU is a total failure and I just "pray" every day that it collapses asap. A few countries pay for the others and their taxpayers are fed up. The European community, if any, should have been limited to the 6 first countries (Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg and Italy). Except for countries like Poland, Rumania and Bulgaria getting all the money (or min. 90% thereof), EU is considered a complete disaster. I also just hope there shall be a referendum held in UK some time soon and that most UK voters voice against the EU so it'll create a movement all over the west. If (or hopefully WHEN) France gets out, it'll be EU's death. In Western Europe, at least 90% of people are AGAINST EU and it's no hazard. People are fed up of paying, of having their jobs move to cheaper countries and having borders opened to all, including crooks, thieves, criminals and terrorists.

I can't wait....

@Gregy: What???? Do you have reliable sources? We cannot just accuse people of wrongdoing unless we can prove it. I personally seriously doubt it otherwise it would have been a huge scandal and everybody in Poland (and abroad) would have talked about it.
