Whenever I heard a Russian repeat what I was saying to her father, She'd always start off with "Mark govorij,,,,", lit. "Mark speaks...."

What helps me understand written Ukrainian, is my instinctive substitution of "g" for most "h" words and I come up with "govoriti" for "howoryty", "golodny" for " holodny" etc. Somehow, this principal failed me in CzechLOL
This phenomenon occurs in numerous closely related languages, e.g Spanish vs. Portuguese. In this case, most, if not ALL "h"-verbs in Spanish will be "f-verbs" in Portuguese, e.g. "hacer" / "fazer", "hablar" / "falar" etc...

A Ukrainian acquaintance once giggled slightly when I asked her in Polish "Czy mowisz po polsku?", explaining the reason for her restrained chortling that in her language, "movit" is archain or bookish, sounding I suppose like :time-warp" Ukrainian:-)

Well look at the facts, will you Vlad! Polish bares close similarity to Czech, yet has nasals which are extant in no other Slavic tongue, sees herself as more Western than Eastern European and is written in Latin rather than Cyrillic.

Nevertheless, learning a language as an adult by seeing, rather than merely hearing, what is being said, is an acknowledged invaluable aid in language acquisition!
I learned Polish primarily IN Polish (not to mention German, as my teacher was bilingual Pole of Austrian birth with scant English knowledge), aided in large part by watching classic Polish movies with Polish subtitles. This is rather like a child learning to ride a bicycle (or even a unicycle) by at first using a tricycle until they feel more confident.
Of course, as with learning any language, the quality or standard of the films being used for language training, that is, for instructional purposes, must be vetted carefully first, before the student be permitted to watch:-)

The Sinti-Roma have always borne a difficult lot over the centuries. No European country has yet to have come up with a sensible solution to the problems of vagrancy, pilfering, and unemployment.
There's presently a special office in the Federal Republic to deal with that overflow of Syrian migrants, perhaps there should be something similar in nature to dealing with the long-term plight of Europe's dwindling, if omnipresent, Sinti-Roma population.

Only one Pole out of the majority whom I know with some degree of friendly acquaintanceship is hostile to the PiS. A vast number of Poles from around the Greenpoint area remain staunchly conservative and mostly support President Duda unstintingly!

Are you from Germany, Intermarium?
German has always been a sort of lingua franca, a tongue which prior to the Fall of the Wall remained the one language, almost the adhesive, which bound East and West! Russian was scarcely neutral as it was the language of the Soviet Union. English was studied by relatively few prior to the '80s, and so the historically practical language was clearly German.
To this day, I know many middle-aged Poles, other Central and Eastern Europeans as well, whose "schoolbook" German is much better than their English:-)
Incidentally, I agree with much of what you've said, up to a point.

Come 2021 Merkel will be out of the picture anyway, so it's only a matter of time before a more Centrist figure, for example Spahn or Merz, will seize control.
The latter especially has been written up in the SPIEGEL for some time now and appears to have extensive international experience, having worked for an American-based investment banking firm.

Curious as to what advantages specifically would exist for a Pole moving to Australia... or even vice-versa for that matter.
The latter has beaches and nice weather, abundant wildlife and, I've been told, a friendly, outgoing, ultra-relaxed, populace who enjoy life
and expect others to as well.
On the other hand, Poland's nearly in the heart of Europe, for heaven's sake, is just bursting with a rich and glorious history going back almost a thousand years,
has a gorgeous countryside and lies within the bosom of Western Civilization!
Give all that up for koala bears or snorkeling on Great Barrier Reef? Seems a grossly uneven exchange, don't you think?

Here again, we've hit the nail on the head! Your sentence from Polish into English is, of course, a textbook example of my LEAST favorite of the world's "languages", translatorese, in which many out there are fluent without even knowing itLOL
Recently, I witnessed yet another Google marvel of translation, "Dziekuje z gory!" - I thank you from a mountain, instead of "Thank you in advance!".

You simply confirmed perfectly the problems with ALL machine translation I've been harranging this forum about; you've got to be ever so exact and type only in such a way as to avoid any misunderstanding.
In English, book can mean " a bound volume", "a bet" (as in "I'll make book on that.") or it can be used as a verb, meaning "o finalize a reservation."
Nearly every language with which I'm familiar, even if I don't know it, has words which can be understood in a variety of ways.

Polish is nonetheless practical. If you use speaker percentage as your yardstick, then Mandarin is the most important language on the planet. Yet how many non-Chinese speak it fluently, or even at all? Polish is at least more accessible for the average foreigner.
While most Poles don't really know English that well, the average Chinese knows even less!
