History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

No, Kaprys, it definitely isn't OK. Racism (or any other sort of discrimination) is never OK.

Poland and Poles are mentioned here bcause that's the topic of the forum. Doubtless on a foreign-language forum about the UK, people are posting about racism there. It wouldn't be towards Jewish people though - more likely about other groups.

I'd say though that there is much more anti-semitism in PL than in English-speaking countries. I say that from my experience, and can't help thinking about that CBOS poll about who people would be happy living next to. I think the result relating to Jewish people would be different in the UK. There, the bete noir group would probably be Pakistanis. It would be interesting to speculate what the result would be if they were on the CBOS list.

Work / Studies In Poland, is it easy to survive on part-time jobs? [259]

the only reasons that people have for not learning the language of the country they live in are stupidity and laziness,

Indeed. This does happen, and of course there are Poles in the UK (for a decade or more, not just for the duration of a degree or a training programme) who can't ring for a taxi. Not everyone has the same aptitude for language learning.

ethno-racial and religious mix

Not a consideration.

Good that the increasing number of studenty jobs in Poland is attracting young people who want to study and perhaps settle.

So? The common language and language of inter-ethnic communication should be Polish

'Should be' but isn't. People studying oin a degree course in a language that isn't their own (English) are generally too busy to study a Slavonic language at the same time, unless they're going to stay, in which case they do of course learn Polish.

a tool of economic oppression.... and/or a vehicle of chain migration

'Economic oppression' is hardly unusual for students, especially while capitalism is unfortunately allowed to persist, and 'chain migration' is the way the world works - thousands of Poles have done this over the last century or so..

Fortunately, the number of courses offered by Polish universities in English, as well as the growing number of part-time jobs available to overseas students will hopefully attract more interest.

Poland is a great place to study, and also to settle down afterwards.

Would be a pity if none of them have opened restaurants here

I think there are a number of Ethiopian restaurants, and of course Arab food like Shwarma is popular in PL - the skills for making that aren't huge, and quite a few kebab shops and other takeaways employ students in PL, just as they do in the UK.

So don't speak dumb. The thing you raised isn't an issue for highly specialised postgraduate courses.

Hopefully, quite a few of the current cohort will settle down in Warsaw and other Popliush cities, creating a much needed diaspora community.

sorted out.

Evidently you mean:

exterminate

Someone tried that, and it didn't end well for him. He also

exterminated

disabled people, didn't he Ironside.

Anyway, how do your fantasies about 'exterminating' your fellow humans relate to ingrained anti-semitism in Eastern and Central Europe?

That doesn't make much sense now, does it I-S.

Does the thought of 'exterminating' people turn you on?

Not so far as I know, however one is the father of a celebrity, and there are some families who have opened businesses and brought relatives.

Of those who are studying in Warsaw, Krakow and Wroclaw now, I'd estimate that about half work, some in tutoring.

What's the graduation rate?

They're all postgraduate.

What's the return to home country after studies rate?

Give them time to settle in and decide their future!

A small number of graduate students have been coming to PL from this country since the 60s. Most return or go elsewhere, some marry and settle down. A good thing either way.

But not enough opportunities to support themselves while studying

Plenty of students do that - they need the cash, and the chance to study in Europe is worth the privations for many (who don't usually live in luxury at home).

The students I send to Poland from Africa don't need to work - they get funding from their government and another source. Nevertheless many choose to work, to have a better life and to save a little money for if/when they want to stay in PL and settle down.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

I'm just sick and tired of hearing all over again about Polish antisemitism

It does exist in PL more than a lot of places (yes, Russia and other parts of the Slavic world too). Over the years I've heard some shocking and frankly nutty things, from throwaway comments that don't make much sense, to people feeling the need to give a full homily on the perceived evils of that group.

I'm talking of course about real life - and that is mirrored by some of the vile stuff that appears here.

And yes, of course not all Poles are anti-semitic fascists - some are liberally minded, outward looking decent people - most are not haters. And some Poles are of course Jewish themselves.

No worries Kaprys.

It's a complicated issue that has become (deliberately) confused in this thread. For some reason (mostly crapmongers like Bieggyboy) it's become a bit of a Poland v. UK thing. It shouldn't, not least because the history, geography, econony and demogtraphics are so radically different. Both countries have a very rich, complicated and often tragic part of their histories that are inexorably linked witrh the Jewish experience, however we should be careful of comparing two situations that are so different.

And studenty jobs are meant to provide pocket and/or beer money.

Many have to use that cash more wisely.

pay for said studies

If someone's unfortunate enough to have to actually pay to study, the costs would be more than one person's wage could run to.

Nevertheless, there are opportunities for overseas students to work in Poland - many do.

Poland is a very attractive place to study, and an even more attractive place to settle down afterwards.

Life / Driving Offences in Poland - How Fast can you go without being arrested? ;) [56]

More Police, more camera's,

Damn right. When someone's propelling a ton of metal through public space, the rest of the public have a right to be absolutely sure they're doing it safely.

eah, there are idiots on many roads throughout the world (including one's that cause accidents

So there you go - there's a reason for road traffic laws and for enforcing them without exception.

but I tend not to complain

A bit like saying that murder shouldn't be on the statute book because you yourself don't go around strangling people.

STOP complaining

I only see one rant, and that's from you.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Not the whole country, though

As far as I know, everywhere in pre-partition Poland.

Until Cromwell invited them back, round about the mid-17th century

1655. It was actually a Dutch Jew who mooted the idea, and Cromwell agreed. The main influx came post-1688 under the Orange regime.

Life / Costs of living in Bialystok [17]

Not with a free standing house that fits that lifestyle

Quite easily. half that amount is still four times the average salary for Bialystok.

will be earning Dutch wages while in Poland, and that he is at least middle management.

No problem at all, in that case.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

There were no Jews in England for several centuries.

Until 1655 when the Jewish community started to return.

What do you mean when you say that you have no anti-semitic laws? Do we?

Poland certainly used to - in fact the only country in Europe that has never had them is Scotland, part of Britain.

Liberal good marxist trotsky corbyn labour bad, driving jews out of uk.

If that made sense...

yeah right but Britain is making up for lost time now.

In what way? we still don't have anti-semitic laws on the statute book.

Interesting to see you quote from such a liberal publication, however have you considered that the rise may be in reporting a particular crime, not least because people believe that it will be taken seriously...

Life / Costs of living in Bialystok [17]

Half that would pay for the sort of lifestyle he talks about in his original post and many people would say they can do it for less. Very few jobs in Bialystok pay that.

Though some do...

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

There was antisemitism before WW2

It isn't unique to Poland, it's an issue across the whole Slavic world and not only. Nevertheless it certainly exists more in Poland than in most places I've lived - over the years I've heard people say some awful and bizarre things.

Just to mention Spain or Britain

In fact, part of Britain (the northern part) is the only country in Europe never to have any anti-semitic laws on the statute book.

Work / Studies In Poland, is it easy to survive on part-time jobs? [259]

I want to know about Poland and part time job for foreign students there .

There are more and more opportunities for students, particularly in Warsaw - you'll do better to look at a forum for overseas students in Poland. Ignore some of the sillier comments in this thread - a quick look at the search function will show you that the usual suspects (who are Americans and don't live in Poland) just spam such threads to deter immigration.

Work / Loan / Credit in Poland (on 1600-2000 PLN income) [10]

Not huge - in fact lower than average for Warsaw, but possible to get a small loan if you have had your account for some time. Is it all provably regular and backed up with paperwork?

There are over 100 thousand Ukrainians alone in Wroclaw.

As I thought. The number of Brits is growing quite healthily now - a lot of families, plus there are burgeoning communities of people from other places.

include?

Have a look at the thread title. Always a good idea before feeling the need to post.

So it's more than doubled - although your figure is high and probably includes Ukrainian citizens, Czechs etc...

It's an attractive place to settle, wherever you're from.

There is no British "community" in Wrocław. There are scattered Brits of various sorts, but nothing that resembles a community. I

There's quite a thriving British community in Wroclaw.
