Life / Who's Leaving Poland? [138]

Enjoy, a bit of shopping therapy too?

I wish. This is a budget holiday- we will check out the Vancouver Canucks skills game and go skiing on Grouse mountain- I don't need to shop- I just need to have a dose of my world and get my head right so that I can be productive....I am kind of dragging at the moment.

I think a no snow winter is starting to get to me.

Love / Confused about a Pole in the closet? [17]

The common thread with him is 'family commitments', and at 35, I don't totally understand it.

it doesn't get better. I don't understand it either, but then again I am not Polish.

Love / Confused about a Pole in the closet? [17]

I think he is probably nervous -being gay in Poland is not widely accepted. There is a pretty big closet over here.

I am really interested in your move. At this moment I am very homesick and I think daily about moving back to Canada- and if we would be able to maintain our same standard of living? (we don't live extravagantly but we do pay for private school, mortgage...etc)

Will you be able to find work that pays the same or is this not an issue?
What about leaving your life behind?

I am a military kid and we moved every two years- for me it is no big deal, but my kids- not so sure. My daughters best friend is switching schools at the end of this year and even with knowing now she is still devastated.

We will have lived in Poland for 10 years this summer- I think that is a good chunk of time.

keep us updated with your decisions.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

Poland will never be home to its foreign contingent.

this is true. we didn't go to Canada last year, normally we go for summer holiday- and I have a feeling it is starting to take its toll. even two weeks to recharge the batteries, so to speak, is enough and by the end of it I am ready to return to Warsaw.

sorry to tell you moania.....your dress is fine..its the naked shoulders, the bottle blonde and the pleading doggy look. It's really not attractive and I can assure you I am not jealous...;)

i will second that.
the funny thing is that this person never misses a chance to tell everybody how beautiful and smart she is- funny, I just see an aging prostitute with too much botox.

This is getting too personal, and you may get suspended if you carry on with these personal attacks. You might get this thread moved to the off topic as well and closed.

there are a few but they are so crowded that the ice is hacked to bits within the first half hour. my kids were playing hockey last year but this year they wanted a break, it wasn't very organized.

i do like living in Poland- i am not whining, but every once in a while....I am homesick- like right now.

well, lets see- today in Warsaw it is probably above zero, dreary, rainy and grey. what can I do outdoors today? **** all. If I were in my home town I would be able to go skating on an outdoor rink and treat my kids to a hot chocolate, we could go cross country skiing at a national park, there is a ski hill about 40 minutes drive from my old house or just even go play in the snow.

what does a family of four do outside when the weather is rainy, dreary and muddy in Warsaw?
In Canada we have learned to deal with the cold- dress for it and you can still have fun. In Poland people hide from it. My idea of fun for my family involves an outdoor activity- can't do much of that in this weather.

"Living in Poland can be a real huge pain in the ass. "

wait a sec- his assessment is pretty accurate.
Canada is bilingual- those that work in the public sector speak two languages.
he is doing fine- he just voicing his frustrations now everybody back off.

like Poland has never seen obnoxious americans, brits, germans, russians, french etc etc. Poland can be frustrating- stop stoning him

no she knows everything about canada as she stayed for two weeks with her auntie in toronto.
i have noticed the days are getting longer. just a few weeks ago it was dark when i closed my shop at 4 pm, now it is still light out. i really enjoy the long daylight hours in the summer- particularly on the baltic.

Life / What is wrong with Poznan? [197]

hold on. having a student in the hospital is the best thing. they are being taught so the teacher will want to do everything by the book.

stop attacking him. Poland can be frustrating and all of you know it.- you have probably all felt the same way at one point or another. he is right- dog shiit, crap drivers, and i can add a few more- men that blow their nose with no tissue while walking around (i almost died when i first saw this) drunks that hang out at the bus stop, poczta, rude sales clerks and my favourite- people that save a place in line while continuing to shop.

I was just in the hospital at the beginning of dec. i was asked if it would be ok to have a student observe at any point, of course i agreed- big deal. but they are required to ask first.

there is a whole band of Norwegian students at medical schools in Poland- it is the same thing as in Canada, difficult to get accepted into schools and shortage of dr.'s. Perhaps Americans are looking for an easy way to become a dr to then get a kick back from a drug company. not in canada- drug companies cannot advertise in canada and dr.'s cant push a specific drug legally and salaries are not the same as in the u.s.

Law / Poland's Zloty 43% undervalued [30]

osiedles have guards, office buildings, parking lots, construction sites, some stores, some bars, mall cops, apartment buildings, grocery stores--there are loads of pensioners that "double dip" and work long boring hours in order to supplement their meagre pensions-they don't do much -stand around mostly.

like Harry said- perhaps you should visit before you comment.

yes. Torontonians are the worst.

Life / What is wrong with Poznan? [197]

I just think as compared to other Polish cities the pride I see in Poznan citizens is well undeserved.

I could say the same for Warsaw- it is for the most part an ugly city and many that live here think they are above the rest of the country- but this happens everywhere.

People in Toronto think they are better than everywhere- the entire province of Quebec feels as though something is owed to them and they should be "distinct"...

France has its Paris and the UK has its London. This is nothing new.
I get your frustration. Living in Canada is pretty easy- try not to compare the two and you will fare a lot better. I have lived in Poland for 9 year and I get asked at least once a week why do you live in Poland instead of Canada and which do I think is better. Honestly both have their good and bad points- they are very different- but both countries are excellent places to live and raise a family.

stupid North Americans

could you take away the north part of this. Every country has its tools who think they are entitled. It is the flock of sheep mentality. no thinking on ones own and entitled because of country of birth. it is a virus that spreads.

it is still cheaper than in North America. It is possible to get student loans to study abroad as long as you intend to return and work in your home country. (in Canada)

funny- if I had to pick the most infuriating thing about Poland it wouldn't be the traffic lights. Maybe he should visit the post office- that would be my number one. I too am homesick.

we have a guard at our osiedle. he is a retired police officer so he gets a pension as well as income from the "security" job he does. He is nice enough but as far as I can see he really just collects my deliveries- which is ok because I will pay 10,000 pln to not go to the poczta polska.

Listen, as a fellow Canadian- this is not directed at you specifically- but Canadians have become fat and lazy just like our cousins to the south. Why should everything be handed to you because you are Canadian. Yes, some things about living in Poland are frustrating, specifically the roads and stupid drivers, but Canada is not perfect either.

Yes, getting into medical school in Canada is difficult and then once you are there it is hard work.--do you want to be a 60% average or a 90% average dr.?

Are Poles rude- hell yes but no more than any European country- and definitely not as rude as Americans.
Living and learning abroad with give you first hand experience when you work in Canada with so many immigrants- you will be better prepared.
Stop whining- you are acting like an over entitled American who thinks that the world owes them something because you have that nationality.
You are Canadian, proud and humble- start acting Canadian.

Food / PIZZA & KETCHUP served only in Poland? [159]

You talk sh1te

These are my favorite Pizza places in Warsaw, try them one day when you finally get round to visiting Poland:

You are right- nonsolo is good- looks like they have renovated since I was last there- the other two....I will have to try them.

If you are ever in the Jozefoslaw area of Warsaw, tucked away is an amazing place called Numero uno. The chef lived in Australia for a number of years working at a pizza place- the Australian owner gave him the secret to the crust when he moved back to Poland.

trattorianumerouno.pl

the anitpasti and foccacia are amazing.

depends where you go. I have found a few excellent places that have chefs that have been trained abroad or are Italian. In Warsaw there is Numero Uno and Casa Mia- just to name two- there are a few more but I can't remember the names. Pomodory as well.

Americans have ruined food. Where else in the world would a coissant be modified into something called the coissandwich- a lovely little breakfast number by burger king. revolting.

American bread is disgusting- the meats are so full of gmo and also corn and other grains have been modified beyond recognition. American milk and dairy is so full of growth hormones that little girls are growing up faster than ever- I mean the whole puberty thing.

Polish food is good. There are better genre's of food but generally speaking it is pretty decent. Not like the gmo, hormone modified slop that is so heavily processed that 60% of the population is obese.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

Even in Canada where the wind chill can reach -45 C it is easier to deal with because the daylight hours are longer there in the winter than in Poland. The sun will still be shining at -20 C. In Poland at around November it gets really grey and dark and dreary and the sun doesn't shine til March.

Law / Starting a daycare in Poland, possible? [15]

Yeah, I know. It's the "The sooner the better" mantra. Unfortunately, it only works in a total-immersion-type natural setting. From my experience, the best age for kids to start learning a foreign language in a formal or semi-formal setting is approx. 8-9 years old. They learn much faster and are way more motivated.

unfortunately there is no way to prove this. the school my kids go to is half polish half english- 75% of the students are Polish and only speak Polish at home but learn English and often French with no problems.

Children are able to assimilate up to 6 languages by the age of 6. This doesn't mean there will not be problems along the way- but ultimately who gives a rats' if a child is slower at spelling or reading when the ultimate outcome is speaking more than one language.

For example, my 7 year old has been having a hard time with her reading. We read each night for 20 minutes and her reading has improved. I don't care if her reading is poor at 7 when she speaks two languages and is learning how to read and write- ultimately by the time she reaches middle school is she is still having problems then I would be worried. If a child speaks more than one language there is bound to be problems compared to a child that is unilingual.
