News / Poland's atheist loonies have had their 5 minutes [239]

is it being implied that all atheists are loonies

Yes, the op has a special way about him.

All this talk about logic, proof and the church being anti religious is just silly.
Science doesnt work that way, good old Popper and later the Hungarian Lakatos is the view most have of science, where each piece of knowledge is placed on top of the previous bit of knowledge to form a thing called a paradigm. That is good for teaching purposes but what happens when a scientific explanation cannot be refuted.

Evolution cannot be falsified, in fact it is not a scientific theory as understood in the classical sense. What evolution does is produce better results than religion but it is essentially a belief and it is justified by going to probability. ie science using an art to provide foundations for universal laws.

In short its just as illogical to say there is no God as it is to say there is a God.

News / Poland's atheist loonies have had their 5 minutes [239]

Facts change and understanding changes. I can't see the difference between believing in God and believing in love and almost everyone knows that experiencing love is a great thing. You cannot define it measure it or prove it but we all know for certain that it exists and is very powerful.

Yeah I know but I didnt intend big time offence.

Pastafarians

These guys really stick together, I'm happy enough to let them do their thing.

FSM

A Catholic FSM or a Protestant FSM? We need to be told, I'm sure there is a massive difference between the two involving big words like marmalade and sausage.

News / Poland's atheist loonies have had their 5 minutes [239]

this is nothing unique to christianity

I dont mean this to sound bad but.....way to go Einstein.

All churches say the same playground things..dont kill, be nice, dont steal, dont shag the neighbours wife etc. Not one of them has anything original to say.

What I find interesting in watching the creation of a religion (Scientology) is listening to people compare beliefs, its as relevant as saying that Potatoes are better than Pasta.

"Atheist loonies" reject the compare and contrast pointlessness that gives a point to others pointlessness.

News / EU won't legislate on Poland's communist crimes [19]

there was also genocide during the Stalin years

Yes, in soviet central Asia genocide happened. Stratocide could be described as such. These phrases were all coined to describe horrific events. The attempt to have Stalinist crimes in Eastern Europe made the same as Nazi crimes especially the Jewish genocide is an attempt to downplay the genocide and to forge an identity. What better way to form an identity than to have a captain evil trying to destroy you. In the Jewish case this was true in other cases Stratocide describes very well what happened.

EU won't legislate on communist crimes
The EU refused to draw equivalence between the two. An attempt to draw up a hierarchy of victimhood by clambering to the top was rejected. Poland to its credit didnt join this charade nor did Poland legislate to down play the uniqueness of the holocaust. The Lithuanian academic Leonidas Donskis coined the phrase stratocide to explain the difference. Stalinist crimes were not genocide.

Life / A frozen then burst pipe in Poland - what to do. [18]

I would just like to add to this cos it happened to me at 3.30pm today.

I had just enough time to get to the hardware shop to find they had no 22mm compression joints have to wait till monday.

The problem that I had was that the burst pipe was part of the heating system. You have to drain all water so find out how to drain your heating system. It turned out that

1 My water tanks dont have shut off cocks so I had tie the ball cocks up to stop the tanks refilling leaving us with mains water to the kitchen.

2. The heating system didnt have a draining point of its own and couldnt be isolated so had to drain it via the hot water tank ie the taps.

The net result is that we now have no heating system and no water in the house. Thankfully I have a fire without a back boiler so there is heat in one room.

Polish houses have water tanks? or do they operate without.

Life / Why Poland is "surprised" by winter and snow every year? [192]

Dealing with the wood becomes a messy big hassle. And your house and everything in it stinks like smoke.

There is an old Punk friend of mine who doesn’t burn a fire for those reasons, I have always found that strange. Well managed, an open fire though not terribly efficient is an asset to any home. I have considered getting a wood burning stove but the kids are against it. Last winter the fire was a godsend, the oil fired central heating froze overnight busting the water pump and it was a few days before I could get a new one.

Law / Lawyer in Poland did a bad job possibility of compensation? [17]

Do you have any more details about the law coming in to enforcement next year?

All I know is that they are in a rush to refurbish before this date. I have seen photographs of the work and it seems outwardly sympathetic though they are using roofing tiles that come in huge pieces. I have never seen this material before and I worked on homers a lot (my dad was a roofer).

They also put in uPVC windows which they got cheap but retained the wooden doors (exterior).

The house is on the edge of their town, its not one of those old town dwellings whose name begins with "K" but I cant remember.

I will try to find more details and mention the info you have provided.

Did the Notary tell the daughter why her POA did not work?

That I dont know.
Perhaps the Notary was too cautious as you said.

Any way it will be done tomorrow morning.

I really appreciate your replies..................now I have to listen to horror stories about the evil Notary until the next baddie reveals himself:)

Law / Lawyer in Poland did a bad job possibility of compensation? [17]

Just out of curiosity, why do they have to be here by 10 tomorrow, surely they can arrange another date?

I think the other party were going to pull out by that time. They only had three people look at the apartment since August.

The documents were all setup in July allowing the Daughter to sign for the purchase of the House and sale of two allotments. These went through smoothly, for some reason the Daughter cannot sign to sell the apartment.

An additional complication is that the house is almost 100 years old and some kind of "listed building" regulations come into force next year. They are reluctant to get a mortgage to pay for refurbishment so need this sale to avoid even greater costs. If that makes sense!!

thank goodness for my fire place, I only installed it because I like looking at a fire.

I know it's not the same extremes but I have always lived with a fire place. If all else fails you can light a fire and cook on it (We did in the 1970s).

A fire brings a house to life is good for the building re air flow and gives a special heat.

Law / Lawyer in Poland did a bad job possibility of compensation? [17]

Hi all,
My friends’ parents had to return to Poland at very short notice because the lawyer who was supposed to set up power of attorney for them screwed up.

Their Daughter signed the papers to buy their house but wasnt able to sign the papers to complete the sale of their family apartment. They have to arrive and sign by 10am tomorrow. With the weather, their flight from Dublin was cancelled now they have to fly from Belfast to Krakow and get a train to Poznan.

Does anyone know if it’s easy to take action in order to recoup their expenses?

History / Christopher Colombowicz: America's discoverer Polish not Portuguese, claim historians [60]

Isn't there a calendar written in stone in a cave somewhere in the U.S. that proves that the Irish or "Celts" were there long before the others?

I'm not sure about that but I remember either hearing or reading a report of Europeans, Including Irish speakers, encountering native Americans and one of the Natives spoke some words of Gaelic.

Travel / Vegetarian places to eat in Krakow [30]

Vegetarianism is just fine for those that choose to eat that way. I don't regard it as inherently more healthy or moral or environmentally sound than an omnivorous diet though.

Seconded.

only leaves on trees will be left...

Eats shoots and leaves?

there are quite a few Indian places, Italian places

Often better than veggie places.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

What I object to is society permitting people to become addicted ...... WE created smokers, we did

I couldnt agree more.

Come on, you don't want people to smoke in a place that sells alcohol.....because of health reasons?

A big smile at a simple truth.

The supermarket thing is important but so is the nature of the bar. Big crowded cattle market pubs are a hell hole at the best of times, with added smoke they are (for me) unbearable.

I like places with a fire and faces, where people read the paper from the back. Smoking has always been a part of bar culture and is being attacked because politicians dont like super pubs.

Man, by nature and classification is omnivorous.

Man by his nature is not simply an engine of unfettered consumption, because you can doesn’t mean you must.

I know you were joking.....I have had this for over 30 years....Carcass eaters who feel threatened by veggies.

The guy just wants a place to eat not to be judged.

Hell Yeah....emotional in their native language.

If you are gonna throw stones make sure the windows are boarded up first.
