I don't thnk he's ever been accused of that, nor has he been accused of any criminal acts except by types who rarely care what they say.

Life / Expat, immigrant, foreigner. Not all foreigners in Poland are expats. [84]

As a wider phenomenon didn't that go out with the hippies?

The idea is centuries older than that.

A wonderful way of bringing back unused sites for the common good. Perhaps you'd prefer places locked up and full of weeds.

Not that this has much to do with the thread, since migrants to Poland rarely (as far as I know) get involved in these things. What, by the way do you think of guerrilla gardening?

News / Restoring the Port of Elbląg? [113]

More prescient than the historical reasons for establishing a port or anything else are the reasons for doing something now. And there just aren't enough reasons to carry out this particular scheme/scam in Elbląg.

Hey, at least they haven't suggested investing millions on a new pack mule route, or shipping corn down the Wisła on rafts.

I think we all remember how he promised all these things, then ran a very neo-Conservative fiscal policy that included refusing to give pay rises to some of the lowest paid public sector workers. Meanwhile, he was busy parachuting his men into positions of power.

Pure opportunism, with an unhealthy dose of Russophobia.

It wasn't a bold proposal, it was nothing but a cheap electoral bribe that Kaczynski had no intention of funding anyway. He had a distinct habit of promising things and then breaking those promises - and let's not forget about the 3 million apartments!

That's what this whole nonsense is about.

Tacheles

I liked Tacheles. It showed what people could achieve together with very little support. True grassroots initiative. The original one, Köpi, is still going, however it's less welcoming to visitors. There used to be a Tacheles style place in Powisle - a real creative gem however the people were evicted and it's now an empty site, chained up and unused.

Chrsitian Humanism

I've nothing against that philosophy, but is it any basis on which to make economic decisions about redeveloping a near useless port? If you prefer Christian Socialism as the basis for economic decisions, you'll find that the philosophy impacts on so many areas of life. As I say - when proposing spending millions on an economic development, only the economics make sense. Otherwise it's just another Potemkin Village. Better to spend the money elsewhere.

I believe I may know the answers, however it would provoke such a shetstorm that I have doubts about posting it. You may notice that cargo tonnage on PKP fell around the same time.

Everything is not only about money, tonnage and ship size.

When we're talking about redeveloping an old port, everything is about money tonnage and ship size.

As I say, pseudopatriots and thugs. A shameful display.

a red totalitarian murderer

Given that he was investigated by the IPN during the duck years and nothing was found, no charges brought, I'd be very careful about using phrases like that. For accusing someone of murder without a court verdict of murder, you could well find yourself paying for the rest of your miserable life.

Are you Bauman's fan?

He is a kind gentle person of 96.

Indeed - but where did he build that room, used for dinners and for lodge meetings?

Katerina of Anhalt-Zerbst, as she was born. Her lover was very short but apparently a hit with the ladies. He also tried to introduce lamb to Poland without much success. You may as well have a go ;-)

Personally, I've never come across a resident originally from another country who's a squatter here, nor is there really much effect on the housing market. Żoliborz used to be thought of as an area for foreign residents but nowadays there's not much evidence of that. Sadyba was always popular pre-1989 and the bottom end of Wilanów nowadays. There's also that housing estate near the American school which Americans like. Saska Kępa still has a healthy French community, Os. -elaźna Brama has plenty of Vietnamese and quite a few Arab and Turkish residents towards the top end of Jana Pawła. Expats are often in company accommodation round the Marina Mokotów development.

Best to wait a bit and give someone a chance. One clue though,is that it was built by a King, loved by his people, but hated by his rivals and today, not buried in Wawel. Famous for his German lover.

Warsaw. The circular square (sounds odd in English, doesn't it?) is plac Zbawicela. At the left of the picture is the marszałkowska dzielnica mieszkaniowa, based on several Polish architects' love of Parisian town planning.

It is Dobrycza.

The reason you gave, Pawian, is almost right. It is in the shape of a węgielnica, since the owner and architect were very keen Freemasons. It's now a museum and worth visiting.

Work / Corporate integration or blackmail in Poland's companies? [30]

My company joins cooperation with a constant competition.

Competition in what way! Surely that's all the more reason to get along well.

CNC

I used to recruit CNC Operators to go to the UK - absolutely tons of applicants.
