News / Polish-American soldier and his wife murdered by four marines [163]

Gee, don't be so defensive. It's an isolated incident. As I said, we don't know the full picture and have no right to assume that we know the circumstances. We know that a wrong was committed and will be duly punished, nuff said

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

It depends on a consideration of many factors. He was subjected to a very 'Germanic' environment as a child. However, he was born in Torun. It may be interesting to note that authoritative encyclopaedias regard him as Polish.

However, international regard is no guarantee of fixed status. There'd have to be an in-depth debate along modern international law lines. It just wasn't as significant back then.

Spot on APU Arien. Instead of praising the praiseworthy, we try to belittle their achievements.

In today's climate of information sharing, we place too much emphasis on patenting and other such claims. We take too much for granted.

When I give lessons on inventions, students are shell-shocked when I tell them the contributions many Scots have made. They automatically get defensive and say, 'well, we've done this and this'. Immediately, they try to turn it into some kind of competition and that's where it all goes wrong.

Now, where's that peace-pipe?

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

Yeah, I know 2 Polish-Americans here, born to a Thai mother. They look like they are from Thailand and speak English as they lived in the States for a long time. So, with us, they spoke English and they often heard others insult them. They are fluent in Polish.

Kitajce, or sth like that, was what they were called. Not nice.

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

True enough. U know, I've even had chats with Polish people with coloured skin and they have been victims of racism. It's very rare, but some even have a go at me for being Scottish. I find it amusing tbh that many Poles can describe Scots as stingy rather than thrifty. Taxi drives and waiters are taken aback by the tips I give. They say Poles rarely do. What simpletons really take stereotypes so seriously as to offend other country's people? The answer is unfortunately many. And, yes, this isn't only a Polish thing.

If I ever hear 'my jesteśmy lepiej', I will put the smack down ;)

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

My GF often gets racists coming into her travel agency, Greg. Kurwa jebany Arabów, brudasy, she hears all sorts of unsavoury comments when she proposes deals to Asian, Arabic or African countries. OK, this isn't broadly representative of Polish culture but she said that such attitudes were prevalent.

As a teacher, I've conducted many classes into racism over my 4 year stay here. There seems to be a consensus, AMONGST POLES, that they are rather racist as a country. That seems to be quite relevant to the thread, wouldn't u say?

What I think at this moment in time is neither here nor there. I've only lived here for 4 years, they have lived here all their lives.

Well, change the title of the thread then. If u want to enter into comparative studies, furnish some stats.

OK, since we have so many resident experts here, which country emerged top of a recent poll (by quite far) as the most racist European country, as perceived by their fellow Europeans?

Thanks Justysia. I'm just trying to be objective based on what I hear and read. My own personal take is that Poland is no worse than Spain, Italy and Germany and is (highly) probably less racist than Northern Ireland and Israel.

Britain also has strong, lingering BNP types

Yeah, that's true. However, there may never be a monopoly on racism. We are discussing proportions and deflection doesn't serve a useful purpose here.

Eh, maybe because we have soldiers from different European countries there. How many Pakistani soldiers do u c in Poland or any other European country for that matter?

I agree gtd, there is an inbuilt defensiveness here which limits the potential for rational debate.

Filios, u know what we mean. If an in-depth study were to be conducted into the incidence of racism across the world, I bet my life savings that Poland would be in the top 25%.

Greg, I could disagree with it if I wanted to. I'm not gonna conduct any empirical research to go validating my opinion. It wasn't meant as an attack. We have many racist people in Scotland.

Deal with it, I know that Poland is less racially tolerant than many other countries. Why is it so hard to accept?

Greg, most honest Poles will tell u as much. Grab some amyl nitrate and crack it open, it may help

News / Poland's fight against paedophilia [277]

What triggered their interest in the first place? Genuine concern? Hmm....

I have a dim view of many professors. Many are just opinionated wan*ers

Some are, some aren't. Poland is more racist than ur 'average' country I'd say.

Yeah, I have neither hairs standing on end, nor boxing gloves on, ready to crack sb. That's why we're here folks, to learn from others who have more knowledge than we have (inter alia. The problem is, we have too many defensive Prof types or religious fanatics who ram nonsense down ur throat. And, hey, I'm just one more person in this HUGE world of ours. To errrr (sic) is human after all.

Thanks gtd, I try to rise above the chance for a scrap.

I'm fed up of being called "nice". It's not a compliment to me in this dog-eat-dog world of ours. I'm starting to agree with u more but be brutal if u must.

I'm from Aberdeen, Scotland originally. I live in Gliwice, Poland.

Hmm...I think it's ok. It is more of a character assessment, true, but it's not so out of place. He made some really valid comments.
