Life / Expats/Immigrants in Poland: Needy, Greedy or contributor. Which one are you? [118]

Partly needy and partly a contributor. I believe my teaching is now at a highly advanced level and I actually say this modestly. It's simply experience, not any special talent as some say about me (I can't think of myself this way). There's my contribution. Needy? Not in the sense the OP outlined at all. I find there are many expenses to cover and I need to knuckle down, simple.

Food / What a typical Polish family eats. How do they prepare food and who cooks at home? [37]

Everything is on the net these days, mike. Not up to speed with the times, are we?

Why not talk of the food Poles eat rather than Polish food (whatever that is)? Poles tend to eat cutlettes, potatoes, soups, side salads and cabbage-based dishes. Silesians prefer beef rolls with red cabbage and a dark sauce (with tatties, of course). It's a Sunday meal which follows a light broth with noodles which resemble Japanese udon.

Love / Are polish women competative about men? [20]

Some are, some aren't. Obviously, the more mouthier types will fight their case but some of the other ones will be a bit mousier about it. Mouthier and mousier, that's about it.

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

I think we could already observe the classic foreign policy ploy of keeping an enemy alive for the future. Communism and its subsequent dismantling was always going to form a core part of foreign policy for the big players on the international scene. Giving up Poland was also not that hard to do for the Western powers. Global engineering was foremost in the minds of 'those' architects.

Life / Do Polish parents let/encourage their kids to **** outdoors? [40]

Poland is deficient in two main things in the centre of cities. Public toilets and parking facilities. The first brings about the situation where they let their kids crap away to their heart's content. It's not the nicest thing to see but I am often not that close anyway (I am short-sighted, all the better). They do it in Scotland but to a decidedly lesser extent.

Law / Benefit entitlement in Poland for foreigners [37]

Many foreigners are an unknown quantity to certain older Poles. They don't know what to expect from them sometimes. They are therefore viewed through a sceptical lens.

Law / Benefit entitlement in Poland for foreigners [37]

The scepticism is visible. Foreigners are a potential threat and it's hard for some old people here to see them as anything else. Benefits would be a joke anyway. Poland is quickly losing the plot when it comes to matching salaries with inflation and providing for those in need.

History / Effects of Living under Communism in Poland [58]

Shrugging off the residual lingering parts of communism will take quite a bit more time. As WB and Pol3 said, they are evident here. The lack of self belief was also a salient point by WB. Some people here really lack it and are little more than leaves in the breeze. They ask foreigners about their country not so much because they actually want to know but it's more about self validation/affirmation. Many are still seeking their ID here.

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

Haven't you seen how democracy is by name only, MyMom?? The views of the people count for jack. Even if you have a referendum, it's no guarantee of a voice (just look at Ireland). I bet they rigged the recount too. The British public likely couldn't have cared less.

Law / Benefit entitlement in Poland for foreigners [37]

I like the sentiment of the post, though. EU or not, they will find ways of denying you. I wouldn't expect even 1 groszy from the state here, despite me paying ZUS for the last 4 years, 2 at a higher rate. Begrudging = litote

Genealogy / Shuski-Zewski-Chuski [5]

Could it have been Huey, Luey and Duey? ;)

Chuski is the most likely of the 3, I'd say. It may be Szuski as Poles don't use Sh like this.

Work / Looking for accommodation & teaching job in KATOWICE [78]

Yeah, a little Japanese kid tried to spit on me in class and I soon fixed that by an 'accidental' knee to the head. I'm not there to take that nonsense so I made sure it didn't continue.

Life / Polish artist? Any one knows these paintings? [10]

quite a discovery was this Beksiński chap. Great song too here! I wonder if becksi is a relative ;)

I like Poles who can channel their romanticism into sth tangible like that Beksiński fellow, rather than high-faluted and floating ideals.

Food / Is chocolate popular in Poland? [52]

That's what I thought when I was 15 or so. It certainly looks Dutch or even German as they have the umlauts.

Food / Is chocolate popular in Poland? [52]

I think, like Brackie, it is from Cieszyn. I seem to recall sth to that effect. It's most definitely Polish although Princessa might be giving it a run for its money.

Food / Is chocolate popular in Poland? [52]

True, there is a lot of that around. I'm surprised that Twix is still Twix. I think it's Radar in Germany.

It's hard to say if chocolate is popularly consumed in Poland but there is enough of it :)
