USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

Downturns are good in the long run because it gets the country back to real productivity.

BINGO! It's what keeps the US at the top of the heap...haven't had a good cleaning for a while...

Please tell me you’re drunk, Polish, on drugs or something...

Two out of three ain't bad, eh?

what will the world do when all of us middle class american taxpayers finally exit the system and sit here waiting for handouts from them.

Dunno, the world is loaning them money at the moment...I guess they'll continue to do that.

the govt cannot just print money out of thin air to pay everyone off forever.

Not least of which being the buyers of US debt.

Oh, Well that's not good. Once you go work in another country you should pay taxes in that country and not the country you are a citizen of unless you somehow do business in it.

Yup. The IRS exclusion is a fairly low amount of total income :(

Please, some of us have spent quite a while sleeping on couches, in squats, even camped for a while!...and relying on others kindness. You get tired of it, bust your ass, and get out of it, and...AND pay that kindness back every single day. That's how it works.

Real Estate / Buying a flat in Krakow; prices are still falling? [200]

If I recall rightly, the Zloty and Euro (and before that, the DM) have always been rather stable in relation to each other.

Did this exercise with SeanBM a while back :)

The Zloty is at the exact same rate against the Euro as it was 10 years ago.

The zloty is weakening big time ATM. Wonder why?

Good question. Seems to be pretty much the same it was at the beginning of summer, and much stronger than it was at the start of the year.

So two NGOs provided guaranteed loans to Polish businesses?

Do you read what you post? You're talking about loans vs grants.

We can even see to this day that Poland is buying American - F-16's instead of Eurofighters, anyone?

Because the US provided enough offsets to make them basically free?

indeed, like dumping a billion dollars into the Polish economy. But that's nothing.. Israel is REALLY expensive.

Stupid call, I don't recall any recent charity by the US in Poland....

actually, I think most of it these days just goes to the debt. they are talking about raiding SS to cover the debt at this very monent. Doubtful you'll see any of it after that coffer is robbed.

Read up on the budget, it's not a secret. There is nothing to raid from the social security trust fund. This is the first year that SS paid out more than it took in. There is no stockpile of money, and never was. The way the SS administration describes it, it's a bit "toilet paper roll through which money flows".

I always also keep in mind that there are numerous Russians in Poland today who masquerade as Poles. so a lot of conversations here do not truly reflect Polish ideas or ideals, but rather the opinions often reflect those who robbed the rich Poles half a century ago.

You also don't seem to know your history very well. Poland was an agricultural backwater 65 years ago. The transformation is well on its way...

We owe no one anything. The world owes us. It's your turn to step up to the plate.

Uh, the US gave to the wrong people and borrowed from the wrong people. Vote people into power that don't hand out money if that's a worry to you.

You need to build your own missile defense system too.

Just a little reminder, the missile defense system did/does nothing to protect Europe.

Like I said, I have issues with my tax dollars going to foreign interests who do not have my best interests at heart. People just like you have helped me and many more Americans establish that view.

Mandatory spending (SS, Medicare, interest) eats up ALL tax revenue generated in the US.

The US doesn't have 11 carrier strike groups for the benefit of the rest of the world, and they're definitely not there for the benefit of Europe. It's expensive power projection for which you and I are now paying the price, and will continue to pay the price for a long time to come.

On $13/hour, students wages in your part, you should be living with someone... In Oklahoma, you could afford a place, but then again, it's a decent starting salary in OK.

What's your friend do career wise?

I truly hope you get a nasty toothache and a big $$ dentist bill.

I had one pulled in Austin a couple of years ago, paid cash, was under $100.

jollyvilledental.com

They come highly recommended. That's about the price of private care at the same level over here.

What do you mean "make it"? Some people are quite successful in one country and decide to move to another for a variety of reasons. Falling in love, new business opportunities, experiencing a new culture, to be close to family... The good majority of us live here by choice, we weren't exiled to Poland...I'd take that a step further and say that it takes quite a bit more effort to "make it" in a new country than in your home country.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

What I found out of interest is that there are bylaws which state that if a place is 100 metres or over, you can introduce a segregation policy like what was seen in Pizza Hut here 4 years ago. The law appears black/white but there are loopholes to be circumvented.

Any comments on unfair competitive advantage to large establishments?

Is it actually being enforced? I've had a ridiculous teaching schedule for the last two days and haven't even had the chance to drop into pubs to look :(

Yesterday it was business as usual, with the addition of no smoking signs taped up. Ashtrays on every table :)

What difference does that make? The US has no need for violent guests, there are enough there already, imports and homegrown.

Anyway, the good majority of people that come from America are relatively rich. It's right for Poles to assume that people coming from a land where it's that easy to money, that the person would be relatively rich compared to Poles who have to work harder (and more importantly smarter), to be able to consume at the same level.

It's all too late for you and I hope that one day you'll be able to either start a new life in Poland or make your way back home somehow.

On a side note, I thought that you were vehemently against violent immigrants in the the US?

And again, regarding the thread title. "Rich" is relative...

I expect some people that aren't naturally gifted in the art of making money or who don't possess the necessary skills or education will probably find making money not all that easy.

With any initiative whatsoever, it's easy to get a job with plenty of disposable income. Most people take that disposable income and use it for conspicuous consumption instead of investments. Lots of $100 jeans and $200 shoes being sold. I remember talking to a buddy of mine back home who worked at the local cable company who showed me a market penetration map, they had the city broken off into about 50 different areas. Amazing phenomenon, the rich neighborhoods and the poor neighborhoods had about the same subscription rate to the premium packages, and about the same monthly bill (averaged in the $80s), Strange world huh?

The only thing poles don't understand is that you have to work hard to get financially well off in the US

Heh, you don't even have to work particularly hard.

Life in the US is certainly much easier than in Poland.

Have no idea how people don't manage to make money over there. Of course buying power is dropping, so it might not look too hot in the future...but right now, still a massive gravy train...

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

Free market Monetarist Economic policy is a fantasy

Successful fiat currency is a fantasy.

The USA market is more important than you presume.

I've already given you the numbers. It was make or break 5 years ago, and even more so 10 years ago. In 5 years, it will no longer be an issue. Most countries are getting out of the dollar, the only people buying US bonds are the US government and the Fed. Meanwhile, China is still diversifying and more and more entities are issuing Euro, Yen, and Renminbi denominated bonds. Full gas, right over the cliff. The world is addicted to cheap goods.

He will put Poland on the map for Americans to work out where it is.

Poland will still not mean enough for most Americans to care much past knowing that it's in Europe.

Life / Any treatment centres for homos in Poland? [455]

Are you on drugs today? No, I said troops should vote on it. Same as above.

So you're saying that we should respect the results of the survey?

Seems like most soldiers and their families, as expected, don't care...
