UK, Ireland / wife wants to have baby in poland not ireland [52]

buddy

Unless the baby miscarries, buddy.

about Ireland but UK is awful

Comparing Ireland to UK is like someone comparing Poland to Belarus/Czech/Slovakia/Germany/Ukraine.
Ireland is a sovereign republic and not part of the UK so comparing their different health systems is quite ludicrous really.

Travel / What to do in Katowice? (short journey) [9]

first weekend of November

Oh Matt, that's the single worst, most miserable weekend to be in Poland ;(
The 1st of November is All Saint's Day and 95% of Poles spend the day visiting graveyards to remember their dead. So most people aren't really in a party mood I'm afraid,

All shops are closed, most pubs and restaurants too.

I live in Kato and the place is as dead as disco that time of year.......however, look up ul. Mariacka (Mariacka Street) that's where all the best pubs/clubs are.

The large park in Chorzow is cool too, although some things might be closed at that time of year.....

Check out Katowice in your Pocket (inyourpocket.com/poland/Katowice), it's a free tourist guide for Kato.

Plus if ya get bored in Kato, Krakow is a only 45min drive away
Oh and bring warm clothes ;)

Hope you have a nice time.

Life / Why foreigners in Poland do not respect Poland's culture and traditions? [68]

Plenty

Iron, Torq whoever ya are.

I've nothing but respect for my new home. And the opinion of some keyboard warrior too cowardly to even register properly on a website means about as much to me as a snot's opinion.

Have a great day!

cloaks itself in self-righteousness.

News / Premier says no recession for Poland [148]

Is it land situated next to villages, fields?
Or do you mean land in the middle of nowhere or between cities where noone lives?

Both.

national parks

Naw, then it's marked quite clearly.

is under protection

That is quite possible, but if that's the case then the govt will be paying some fee to the landowner and everyone's a winner :)

would be any different lol

That's true, I had mused on that already....I think for the govt, developing agriculture is pretty low on their to-do list. I think it should be higher personally, as the potential is quite grand.

many young people move to towns and cities

Indeed so, I left my countryside life behind for bright city lights, and I certainly wouldn't have tolerated becoming a farmer back then.....now? Well, ya never know ;)

easy to buy out lands

That's true too, but if it's state owned then I think it should be leased out to stimulate growth.....or even bought back by the state, under purchase orders where the owners are given its value.

are too complicated and unclear regulations, bureaucratic constraints and too few marketplaces

It's like everything in this wonderful land we call home ;)
Marketplaces I don't however agree with, there are plenty of farmer's markets popping up around the place and like I tabled before, the idea of local farmers coming together and former a co-op should certainly be considered before dismissed.

And that's a good question, too

It is, but I'm a farmer's son, I know fallow land when I see it ;)

As said, I think it's low on the priorities, but I imagine than in years to come it will become more important. However, I think now would be a good time to buy up surrounding land and turn them into larger fields, land is quite cheap in agricultural areas and if I was a larger French/German farmer with money to spare I'd be in the process of landgrabbing as we speak and turning the land to make a consistent profit.

the business owner pockets the 20% social insurance contributions

What? No way!
So, if I ran a dodgy language school and 'hired' a teacher, by making them sign a barely legal contract I'd get to pocket some money myself?

So that's why so many morally corrupt people are attracted to setting up school.

And here's me thinking they just want to spread knowledge of the language.
Silly me.

Well, will you look at that.

Mr. Keyboard Warrior using derogatory, racist language against a poster.
You don't seem to have mastered the skill of debating while on your self-inflicted hiatus, have you?

A master debater you are not, but you are something that rhymes with it.

It's certainly one of the more despicable practices

If there was a 'like' button it would be pressed right now.

+1 Delph and from what I'm seeing it's a practice that's spreading, unfortunately.

What really drings my gears though is the practice of pregnant women taking almost two years off work just to drop a sprog. I'm crucified on Zus, because women ain't working while preggers. Wtf is up with that, back home women work up until pretty much the last month or thereabouts. No so here...as soon as they fall pregnant they get a 'sick note' for some BS reason and then don't return to work until about a year after they've had the child.

I think the govt should hounding out these benefit frauds and putting them back to work. (I mean before they deliver of course - I wouldn't expect a woman to return to work before 6 months after delivering)

But yea, it's so good to have you back on this forum, making quality contributions, full of insight and facts, all of which delivered with complete and utter objectivity.

You add so much to the debate. Really, truly is awesome to have you back again.

Lesser Poland

Let's call it Małopolska :P It sounds much more appealing than "Lesser Poland" ;)

tons and ton of empty land not being utilized

It means that lots and lots of land is not being used productively.

you just drive a road from place

I travel a lot thru Mało & Bieszczady and so much of the land is fallow...who owns it? Why isn't it being used?

If it's govt. owned why can't it be leased to farmers so that crops can be grown and herds can be grazed upon it?

Farmers would make some extra money and could increase the size of their herds/the yield from the crops they grow etc.

to be run like the French system?

Exactly, it's the total inefficiency of it that I cannot understand.........well, I do I suppose. If one was to even suggest that local farmers were to form a Co-op to spread the distribution of goods & wealth you would probably be labelled a Stalinist, even though the system has been proved to work in countless areas of the Europe and the world already.

Poland, South East & East, tons and ton of empty land not being utilized. CMS had a good post about it earlier in the thread.

I'd just love to be able to live in Germany

We'd all love that.

UK, Ireland / wife wants to have baby in poland not ireland [52]

not on the extreme end?

Not really, I read somewhere that abortions like this happen 20-30 times a year. In this case the hospital got the law wrong.....it was a gray area to begin with...but new laws have been past to ensure it doesn't repeat.

you're naive

Ah, be nice.

effectively and efficiently

Exactly the same as he'd do it in Ireland........but with somebody translating. Easy-peasy

educate

Yes, I totally wanted your education......so much for inviting you for a beer in Katowice, I retract the offer since you're quite the meany and hope you enjoy living in Tychy. But you'd probably enjoy your time here more if you didn't act the hardass on an insignificant Internet forum. Sunshine.

Good day to you and yours.

UK, Ireland / wife wants to have baby in poland not ireland [52]

Do you know

most extreme cases

Not an extreme case, if you bothered to read the link provided you'd know that Irish law states that (in my own words) if there's a heartbeat the baby must be delivered.

If the father was required to make decisions on behalf of his wife and child, in which country would he better equipped to do that?

Do you honestly think he'd be the only English speaker in a hospital.....you do know that most doctors are required to learn English these days? Many courses in a medical course are even conducted in English.

Personally I've even taught hospital receptionists because they are being asked to learn the lingo too.

If the father was required to make decisions on behalf of his wife and child, how would he do that in Poland?

He would make a decision using his brain and then the synapses/neurons in his brain would tell his mouth to vocalize this idea, while this is happening his lungs would inhale some air, and then exhale it past his vocal chords to vocalize the idea.

If the mother and newborn had to stay in hospital a little while longer, in which country would that be better for them all?

Wherever she and baby would feel more comfortable, which according to OP is Poland.

UK, Ireland / wife wants to have baby in poland not ireland [52]

The facts are that she is wrong

No, the fact is she wants to have the delivery in a different country, because, if something goes wrong and her life is put in jeopardy then the baby can be aborted late term, however, in Ireland, like we seen with the disgraceful Savita Halappanavar case, Ms Halappanavar was made to deliver a dead feoutus because Ireland didn't allow abortions.

The hospital told them the foetus was not viable, but they could not perform an abortion under Irish Law as the foetus's heart was still beating. During the next several days, Halappanavar was diagnosed with septicemia which led to multiple organ failure and her death.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Savita_Halappanavar

Would you like this to happen to your missus? I f!ckin doubt it.
And that's the reason why any foreign woman living in Ireland would be better off returning to a health system they trust to have their child

she doesnt trust our hospital system here there is no talking to her

Can you blame her?
I had a few female mates back in the auld sod before I left who were going back to their home countries for the same reason.

If I was a woman, I certainly wouldn't want to give birth in Ireland if I had the chance to give birth in a safer country.

You do remember the Savita thing???

That's why she doesn't trust the Irish health system....and rightly so.

News / Premier says no recession for Poland [148]

I am surprised that this thread

Suppose coz the average unemployed Pole may not speak English and let's not forget this forum is way, way, way down the list of the most popular forums in Poland.

I dunno man, I've starting my 5th year here now and ever since I arrived here I've been hearing 'oh, the recession is coming..... people are losing job...blah, yawn', etc.

But all I've seen is an overall improvement in infrastructure, new apartment complexes and hotels mushrooming everywhere and loads of newer cars on the roads.

For me, the low rate of Poland's growth saved it from a recession that was felt in other countries, if a 4% growth falls to 3% it's hardly noticeable and Poland's growth has been roughly the same for the past 4 years anyway. Also, it has to do on what Poland produces. From what I know it's mostly food and since everyone needs to eat it's exports have been in line year on year. As people earn more and more services become available we may see a change, but so far it looks like a conservative approach to the handling of the economy has been the right choice.

Now, with IBM, Google et all coming this may change. And with the changing tax laws regarding communications companies (i.e where every EU wide communications company has to pay tax in each different country and not just where they are based) coming into play, hopefully that money will be used properly to further bolster the infrastructure and services............ unless PiS get in and p!ss it all away :(

Law / Opening a bank account and buying a car in Poland (account in Euros, car tax, insurance) [22]

Buying in Germany??

It's easy, you will have to pay a percentage of tax, but the cars are typically better, i.e have been driver on better roads so far. I bought a car for circa 20,000zl from Germany, I think I paid about 1000zl tax.....but it's really a registration fee, i.e new plates etc.

My fully comp insurance with all the bells and whistles was 1400zl or 1200zl per year, don't remember tbh. That's full assistance anywhere in europe, fire and theft, 3rd party etc etc.

Re: Banks,
I'm with PKO, it's a business account so every time I need to call them I'm given an English speaker. re: Internet banking if you do it through Google Chrome then you have an automatic translator installed. However, as we're recently seen, Chrome isn't the most secure, Internet Explorer while by far the worst browser is actually the safest. I think ING and Alior can provide websites in English.....there's 2 previous threads on this here:

News / Premier says no recession for Poland [148]

Personally I've seen zero signs of recession. I no absolutely nobody here who isn't working.
I've a few mates that work in HR for some companies and they're constantly recruiting.

Albeit it might be bad in the countryside, but hasn't it always been bad in the countryside?
Something I don't understand about the Polish countryside though. So much land is fallow, it's just empty grassland, can anyone explain to me why this land isn't be used productively? OK, I realise most small farmers cannot afford to buy land, but if it's government land why can't they rent it to farmers for a low fee to stimulate business?

News / 23 Shale Wells Drilled This Year Alone in Poland - 41 More to Go... [50]

director of Gasland

yea, a smear campaign lead by the gas companies.
That has been shown in the follow up short sequel video.

this is the future

No, you are wrong.
It will lead to SFA money being earned for Poland, as most of the player will be foreign companies coming into Poland, since Polish companies haven't got a clue how to run this kind of 'business'. the profits will not stay in Poland, if you believe they will.......well.... just wait and see.

As a poster identified above, SFA job will actually be created.
The benefits in no way, shape or form outweigh the disadvantages of fracking.
Over 700 chemical are released into the earth during the process, you support that?
Really?
Honestly?
You are totally cool with the contamination of drinking water, the deaths of livestock and the destruction of the living environment?

While most forward-thinking countries are looking at wind, wave & solar power (Poland has a large coastal area that can be used for the first 2, while sunshine is plentiful with Poland's nice climate) to secure easy, cheap & clean energy for the long term, Poland is typically looking to make a quick buck. That's why this country will always lag behind Europe's main players; its inherent short-sightedness.

i want poland to be indepedent

Then as usual Goof, you need to research more on the topic.

Estimate put Poland's shale gas at only lasting between 50-100 years. Not exactly independence is it.
As a poster pointed about above some of this gas is 50% nitrogen.
Shale will be a complete and utter waste of money and lead to nothing but the death of livestock, wild animals, plants, rivers, trees and the complete decontamination of drinking water in fracking areas.

Educate yourself.

Watch Gaslands. Educate yourselves and stop believe every cock and bull story feed to you by a biased media, who are the b!tches (dependent on advertisement money) of powerful lobby groups and multinationals.

Learn and wake the fuq up.

Shale has decimated parts of America, ruining drinking water and killing countless animals. But the sheeple just continue to stare at their tv/computer screens safe in the knowledge that the government would neither sell them out nor their health for an injection of quick cash.

Shameful goings on, utterly disgusting.

Life / What makes a man a Pole? what does it mean to be a Pole? [187]

Don't blame God for human stupidity and greed

But he made man in his image, ergo, we are a copy of the bearded one. If we're stupid and greedy it's only because the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
