Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

So earning 4000 PLN net wouldn't be enough to save almost anything if i read well.

No, though some people manage it.

I know of people who live 4+ to a room in order to have some disposable income. Not just twentysomethings either.

Law / Jobs and Economic Status in Poland [64]

spend

That's how it works. Not salting money away. Our country is not nor ever will be Switzerland.

That's just terribly simplistic analysis.

Hard to describe the economic analyses quoted above as simplistic.

For economic illiterates.

I wouldn't describe the OECD as that. Perhaps you feel you can do their economists' jobs better. Or maybe you'd like to be the manager of Man U because you once watched a football match.

Have you been in touch with HSBC, E&Y, OCED etc yet to offer them your top-level economic knowledge (at a cut price) yet?

He could save them some of the millions they pay for the world's best economists. Hey, a saving.

The best example that you guys simply have no clue what you are talking about.

I think you mean you disagree. The expert opinion (three were posted above at your request) does not support your ramblings.

Law / Jobs and Economic Status in Poland [64]

the articles you are coming up with clearly state that "the only economy to avoid recession" was due to massive public spendings

The issue isn't what something "is due to" - it's what the state of the economy is now. The experts say that it's weathered the global recession rather well so far.

As some of us said all along.

people whose country is collapsing

Our country has never had it so good.

Life / Immigration in Poland and being surrounded by a monoculture? [134]

Regarding the First Nations, what you've described does unfortunately exist and much of it is due to internal corruption.

Very sad really. It's happened in Australia, Greenland, parts of the Americas and Russia too. It's a brutal thing to uproot someone from their traditional way of life and give them a weekly check instead.

LOL ! Please quote 3 economists, who agree with that.

LOL as much as you like - and eat humble pie:

Poland has been the OECD's best real GDP growth performer through the crisis. The priority in terms of macroeconomic policies is to steadily reduce the public deficit.

oecd.org/poland

Over the past decade, Poland's economy has consistently expanded at one of the fastest rates in Europe. It was the only country to avoid a recession during the 2008 crash and the ensuing financial crisis.

Poland's enduring economic health is beyond dispute, as Ernst & Young noted in its 2012 European Attractiveness Survey,

Law / Opening "Budke Gastronomiczna" [37]

If it gives huge portions and decent sized cups of tea etc, plus stuff that will appeal to international drivers who probably won't have a packed lunch, it could do very well.

a kebab shop. EU money

It's hard to imagine a roadside kebab stall attracting EU funding. The road maybe, but not the chuck wagon in the layby.

Real Estate / Buying a flat in Krakow; prices are still falling? [200]

5k pln is not a large salary.

So far 3 banks have turned us down, one has agreed but we have to have a Polish resident on the application.

Perhaps they were asking for such a ridiculous offer to discourage him?

It looks like this is the case.

Exactly - Poland is doing rather well at the moment.

How long it will last, and what would happen if there was a regime change is a different matter, however at the moment things are good.

Work / Salary tax in Wroclaw - is it 30% for 15,000 PLN income? [16]

More or less yes. The tax calculator that Monitor posted a link to will give an exact amount, but yes, it includes those things. Assuming you're on a full-time contract (affects the tax/Social + Health Insurance), you'll be left with 10,000 which is enough to live fairly well, rent a decent flat, pay for kindergarten and save some money.

You should ask if they include Medicover - most jobs in that salary range give it.

I don't think so either - perhaps a lack of savoire-vivre ;-) - though worth mentioning that outside the eurozone banking regulations are national rather than EU-wide and the regulations for non-residents getting credit can be more stringent, not to say awkward in PL.

I wonder if he meant Norwegian Krone? 10k of those would only be 1272 EUR or 5516 PLN per month...

the desert

I was thinking of Poland actually - land of baseball caps, sportswear and crap pop music.

You are in an all-male compound in the middle of the desert: name a female which would not be very very popular where you are.

Anything with a crack really. last year's Olympic Beach Volleyball was making some of them go dizzy.

a loan from PKO for a flat in Krakow with 35% paid upfront.

It's an odd one, isn't it. Perhaps it's because he doesn't live here and the mortgage was arranged through something like Oppenheim Kredit (where the actual mortgager can be any bank). either that or he's mixing up his currencies. That or he's either adding or omitting part of the story.

You're forgetting that not all mortgages are sold by banks and also that the capital for a broker mortgage may come from a bank, a subsidiary of a bank or another source altogether, especially for larger mortgages or those where the client's profile or requirements don't fit a bank's offer.

Real Estate / Buying a flat in Krakow; prices are still falling? [200]

hmmm are you sure you aren't mixing currencies there? 10 thousand Euros per month? Unless you're a football player you'll struggle making that even in London.

You'd be surprised. There are people based in PL who get more than that.

You're honestly telling me a Bank in Poland is demanding 17x (!!) the net average wage in order to grant you (or someone else) a loan for a flat? Something's not right there.

That would depend on the mortgage broker, the mortgagee's personal circumstances and the length of the mortgage.

And why would anyone taking home 120 thousand Euros (more than half a million zlotys) per annum need to get a loan for a flat in Krakow in the first place? o_O

I can think of a few people who get mortgages for flats in PL with that sort of income. Some of us even choose to rent our home, often for tax purposes.

Travel / Rihanna complains about lack of privacy on Polish beach [150]

What is the Arabic word for mixed blood, Jon?

There is one, however it's rarely used due to being perjorative

Here is a list of offensive words, many people still use on PF,

a certain type of right-winger loves nothing more than to offend, the adult equivalent of smearing **** all over the pushchair

the term is unacceptable and not in common usage in English

This is true.

Professor of African History at Cornell University, John Clarke. He very clearly thought that using the word mulatto was perfectly acceptable

It is certainly acceptable in a historical context - perhaps to refer to Mary Seacole, Pablo Fanques, or others from a certain part of the world during a certain time period. Providing this is done sensibly and tactfully.

There is nothing "leftist"

Nothing leftist at all. Just good manners to avoid deliberately using a term about somebody that they find offensive. Then again, a certain type of right-winger loves nothing more than to offend, the adult equivalent of smearing **** all over the pushchair (a few of those on here), so perhaps it is leftist in the very best sense.

Life / Immigration in Poland and being surrounded by a monoculture? [134]

In some cases, people that have no credible achievements in life tend to puff themselves up with things that they were born with, such as ethnicity, skin color and citizenship, or with achievements of other persons, like hypothetical distant ancestors or people of similar ethnicity and skin color etc.

This is absolutely spot on. Feeling some sort of misplaced pride about a person half the world away because they have a similar amount of melatonin in their skin or because their surname is similar is frankly bizarre.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to get DrPepper in Poland? If so where, thanks

Some branches of Żabka are selling it now.

Would you really like to go for a walk with a beer in your hand in Saudi?

I have done this. Also very frequently strolled through town with a J, though that is rather more acceptable there.

I wonder if many Saudis have ever seen Rihanna. I can't imagine that many photos of her can be printed there.

They drool over her on YouTube.

Na, Harry is right. Her music sucks but I'd definitely plow her.

That's what it's all about.

I don't see being white as anything important. Why should I care about the colour of mine or somebody's else skin?

Exactly. Most people don't care about skin tone - and those who do generally have all sorts of problems.

Work / Living in Lublin (as a teacher)!? [36]

I will come there with an EU project, called Comenius and I will be working in a government school. My money is totally net and guaranteed by EU. I will have permit for 11 months. :) and I will work only 12 hours/week.

As Delph says, it isn't a bad deal if it's net and comes with a permit. Don't expect to save much if anything on that and you should see if they'll help you find accommodation. You'll have plenty of time for private lessons however you won't be able to charge much for them unless you're prepared to wait a long time - there will be less competition in Chełm for that, however it's worth mentioning that the whole region is quite poor. But not at all unpleasant.

It sounds very worth doing.
