UK, Ireland / How many Poles in London in 2011? [6]

No. And nothing like them either. They don't sound even remotely English.

There's a Bispebjerg in Denmark, but frankly both places sound American.

Polonia / Looking for Polish Teacher in Abu Dhabi [6]

Try the embassy in Dubai - they have a mailing list of all the Polish residents of UAE who have registered with them. They are sure to know someone in Abu Dhabi.

News / Poland -- an Indonesian's eye view [7]

Do you think it objectively sums up present-day Poland?

It isn't meant to - it's a tourism piece about certain key aspects of Warsaw's past.

News / Madonna to be discussed at Polish exorcists meeting [27]

Precisely. Which is more of a threat to Poland: Madge or the rise of the far right? Rather dire music or violent racism? But then perhaps it's expecting a bit much to hope that the RCC speaks out against Nazis and anti-semitism.

One brings pleasure, the other tries its hardest to bring misery.

News / Madonna to be discussed at Polish exorcists meeting [27]

I still think she does it to attract attention. Until it will bore her to death, and then she will "discover" another conviction :)

There's quite a lot of truth in that. The group she's involved with is basically a New Age sect who make their money selling lucky blue string and overpriced mineral water. The true Kabala/Qabala is hugely complicated and a life's work for some - the thing she does takes some of the concepts, restates them in a way that's devoid of the esoteric meaning and then sells it as a package to the gullible.

Probably harmless, definitely a scam.

Travel / Rihanna complains about lack of privacy on Polish beach [150]

I remember some years ago Bruce Springsteen was in Antwerp for a concert, and afterwards he slipped away and with some members of his band hit the pub-life in Antwerp Old Town, on their own.

I was sat next to a guy in a restaurant once and after he left people were going on and on about him being someone called Roger Waters. It didn't mean much to me and I'm still not sure what the difference is between him and Roger Whittaker. I didn't leave with any particular impression of the guy. He certainly didn't have minders or PR people in evidence.

Performers who live and die by publicity (Rihanna is one of them if she travels with an entourage and pretends to complain about privacy) live and die by getting their face in trashy publications and on the television - it's how they make their living. Nobody would buy this trashy stuff if it wasn't marketed heavily. What do those Kardashiam people really do except pose in front of news cameras? All smoke and mirrors.

Travel / Rihanna complains about lack of privacy on Polish beach [150]

Omg how can you not know her songs even if you don't like her. And umbrella is an old song lol. But she does we found love, what's my name.

Easy. I don't have a TV, don't listen to pop music radio and go to bars that play older music. Though I listen to an awful lot of music, mostly classical, go to the opera. the ballet and the Filharmonia every couple of weeks plus other classical performances, sometimes go to jazz concerts and quite possibly hear more live music than anyone here. If I'm somewhere that pop music is playing, it tends to go in one ear and out of the other. No pop tune is original, (there is a finite combination of notes on the tonal scale they use) the lyrics are hard to hear and the production methods they use make them very easy to ignore.

Rihanna is undoubtedly successful, however if she pitched up in a lot of places she'd be ignored. She chose the town beach at Sopot accompanied by her very successful PR team and crammed with the type of people who buy her product. No accident.

News / Madonna to be discussed at Polish exorcists meeting [27]

They are focused on the YOLO culture and its negative effect on youth

I had to look up YOLO and it is indeed true - hedonism is nothing new.

Doesnt that witch Madonna read the Satanic Jewish Kabbalah?

Nothing wrong with the Kabala.

You are thinking of the Hermetic Qabalah,

Madonna practises a very watered down version of it.

History / Polish archaeologists unearth 'vampire grave' [18]

Is witchcraft illegal in PL? And did she float?
Illegal enough to arrest someone for it apparently. It was in a village down in Podhale. The prosecutors didn't pursue the case because of the obvious lack of proof. That and ridicule from the media.

Poland was quite a hotbed of witchcraft (and witch hunts). Doruchów was of course the most famous case but there were hundreds of others.

An update on the Polish 'vampires':

Legends of vampires roaming rural areas of Eastern Europe may have actually been the result of untimely deaths of cholera victims, according to scientists.
Suspected vampires were buried in bizarre rituals during the 17th and 18th centuries to ward off evil and prevent them from rising again from the grave.
But rather than being blood-sucking monsters, tests have revealed they were in fact early victims of cholera and were viewed suspiciously because they died so suddenly.
Archaeologists discovered skeletons in a Polish cemetery that had rocks and sickles placed across their necks in these strange funerals, known as apotropaic burials.

History / Polish archaeologists unearth 'vampire grave' [18]

This method of burial is called there: 'antvampires methods' and was especially popular in the south of Poland, for example in the area of Sandomierz.

I wonder when the most recent antivampire burials were?

it strikes me very much

You're struck all too easily in that case.

And the article is not even on the front page of their website, only in the "Most ..." sections!

Which are on the front page of their website.

Hard to say what point you're trying to make.

Real Estate / Apartment damage and rental deposit in Poland [20]

The "damage" was just normal wear and tear after 9 months.

They often moan about that and really expect every cheap saucepan to look unchanged after years of daily use. They don't really have much of a concept of wear and tear (unless specified in a contract), however along with the rental agreement there is sometimes a separate bit of paper listing the furniture fittings with a vague one word description of the condition. This means very little as there's nothing to say it's the same item (yes, Polish law is this useless).

If court's so expensive, what does a tenant realistically do if a landlord refuses to return a deposit or keeps some of it unfairly? Nothing?

Nothing, really.

Update, there are pictures of the apartment's original condition that were attached to the lease.

I just noticed your update. Pointless unless the photo was witnessed by a reliable person, signed, dated and a second photo (also witnessed by a reliable person, signed, dated) was used in court to prove the present condition the moment your son left the flat with no possiblilty whatsoever that the damage occurred afterwards.

After all - the landlord did give the deposit back and the time for grumbling would be before, not after. Anything could have happened in the time since while the flat is not in your son's care.

Ask for receipts for the rent so that you can give them to the tax office as part of your yearly tax return. Watch as landlord gets frightened.

Normal enough.

In short, if the landlord actually did try to take any action (and there isn't the same small claims procedure that the UK has) they would be laughed out of court and end up out of pocket too. In Poland they often try this sort of thing on, but it is bluster. If they keep pestering, Harry's suggestion about tax will put a stop to any silliness once and for all.

History / Polish archaeologists unearth 'vampire grave' [18]

Skeletons were found with their heads removed and placed on their legs indicating they had been subjected to an execution ritual designed to ensure the dead stayed dead. Anybody accused of being a vampire in the distant past faced a grim fate. Sometimes they would be decapitated, while another punishment involved........

Grisly details here

Law / Jobs and Economic Status in Poland [64]

Are you nuts ? I'm not saying that HSBC and others you quoted are wrong on anything,

That is the diametric opposite of how you come across.

It's you who totally miss the context of what they are really talking about.

Do you realise that the three reports quoted are not raw data? They are all presented to show the context and all ramifications clearly. These do not back up your layman's opinion that the Polish economy is doing badly.

Nah. Greggy is posting this stuff because he supports the party in perpetual opposition in Poland. He's simply trying to do his part to spread their propaganda of doom, misery and gloom

Indeed.

That's very very true in Poland. The amount of idiots who seem to have put themselves in a massive amount of debt just to show off their big house and big car is astounding to me in Poland - what's the point in owning such a thing if you have to work 14-16 hour days to pay for it?

There are too many people like that. What's the point of having bits of land you can't sell or a second home you've never got time to visit just so your children can be lazy when you're dead?

Travel / Rihanna complains about lack of privacy on Polish beach [150]

Indeed.

Personally, I couldn't name even one of her songs or pick her out in an identity pareade.

The idea of a pop star pitching up in the middle of Sopot beach at the busiest time of the year and then complaining that a crowd formed is strangely amusing though.

Real Estate / Apartment damage and rental deposit in Poland [20]

It depends on what proof she has of the condition of those items before he moved in.

Worth mentioning that it's expensive and complicated to go to court in Poland and most threats of legal action are just that - only threats.

News / General strike 11th September in Poland? [26]

Getting rid of

Just as there was a massive turnout to get rid of the PiSuarzy at the earliest possible opportunity, just after their strange bedfellows, the falangist LPR and the criminal SO had left them. It was rare to see the country so united in a common goal.

This case is different - it's another in a long line of parades by Solidarity people. There isn't the same sense of urgency to change the government at all costs as there was when we had the ducks in power.

Travel / Rihanna complains about lack of privacy on Polish beach [150]

If I wanted seclusion on a Polish beach I would go to the beach just north of Jurata on the way to Hel, the sand is white and the beach is always empty, Rihanna is notorius for going walkabout, in London she jumped on the tube to go to her concert at the 02.

Most of the coastline is quite peaceful - she happened to choose the most crowded resort and no coincidence.

And nowadays it has been taken over by the PC dictatorship who use such usually poorly defined buzzwords as reproductive rights
