News / Nationalist-socialists gaining ground in Poland [24]

An interesting article. Some obvious flaws but well worth reading to see the dangers that could lie ahead..

Something has changed in the political atmosphere in Poland. Frustration appears to be growing among Poles, especially those of the younger generation.
While 14 percent of Poles are unemployed, that figure rises to roughly 27 percent among people under the age of 25. What's worse, even when young people do find a job, their chances of receiving a proper, full-time job contract are slim. It is now the norm for companies to offer young employees temporary work contracts, which offer little social protection.

As a result, almost half of Poles aged 25-34 live with their parents, compared to the EU average of 28 percent. It is therefore hardly a surprise that the most popular party in Poland is currently Law and Justice (PiS), a nationalist party with a socialistic economic philosophy.

News / Demolish Poland's Palace of Culture? [55]

All the ugly communist style housing blocks can go though.

The apartments are fetching high prices, especially the Stalin era ones. People like them.

News / Demolish Poland's Palace of Culture? [55]

What's the view like from the top of it?

Spectacular.

Expensive to go up now, so it's better to go to the Panorama Bar at the top of the Marriott during happy hour. There's a not very good cafe at the top of PKiN, nice architecture, overpriced nescafe.

I was once alarmed that when you put a shilling in the telescop and look in the direction of my old flat, you could get such a good view of my living room that it's possible to read the headlinines of the newspaper on the coffee table.

News / Demolish Poland's Palace of Culture? [55]

I'm telling you that destroying a fellow Christian church in the name of petty nationalism is pathetic and that anyone that took part in it should have been ashamed.

It's the same issue - trying to blot out the past by destroying a building. It doesn't really work.

a clear plurality of people are against touching it.

Evidently plenty of people like it.

Off-Topic / After spending another 3-months in Europe [5]

Early fall or late spring would be best for Berlin. From mid-October until mid-March it's not a nice place - really not somewhere to visit in winter.

News / Interesting article about mess in Polish offices. [22]

A "mess" would mean that anything goes and no procedures exist.

In this case, the procedures themself are the mess. An army book is pointless, needing marriage documents to get an ID card is bizarre and th edriving licence thing is weir.

The whole thing sounds like something from Kafka.

News / Demolish Poland's Palace of Culture? [55]

I think it's only a shame that it's not used as a genuine Palace of Culture these days.

There are a couple of theatres as well as all the concerts in the Sala Kongresowa. Plus the Palace of Youth in the North-West corner. Collegium Civitas uses quite a bit of the building too.

It's really very well used.

Life / Vinyl record stores in Warsaw. [5]

It may have closed, but there was one in the passage behind Empik, ul. Marszalkowska and another edgier one in the tiny passage behind that one, reachable through the alleyway next to the old Relax cinema, basically going from ul Zlota, just after the pedestrianised bit near the fancy shops, down the back of the cinema and leading to the corner of ul. Zgoda and ul. Sienkiewicza.

Sorry it's a bit vague, and that part of town is changing fast, but the vinyl shop was definitely there in the spring.

News / Demolish Poland's Palace of Culture? [55]

Obsessing about the Palace of Culture = living in the past.

Very much so.

people do like talking about it, and I'm please that most want it to stay. It's an iconic landmark, and a symbol more of post-war reconstruction as much as anything else. More than 50 people died during its construction, and the building is still used a lot.

Personally I'm kind of fond of it in an ugly pet kind of way.

Spot on.

Life / New Life İn Poland (I'm coming from Turkey) [8]

have you asked the Polish cities and their inhabitants if they want or can receive you?

That's a lot of people to ask.

Poland's about 38 million. What will happen to Poland if a large enough number of Turks or others decides to come?

The million that went to the UK from Poland over 5 years have created plenty of space.

Real Estate / What's with the commitment for rents in Poland? [9]

Why flats rantings here require commitment contract for like 9 months or a year at least?

The owners don't want to have the flat empty several times a year with no income.

In other countries you can rent for a day, week, month, whatever as long as you pay for each period.

You can in Poland, though that type of flat has a higher rental cost.

I mean I can't guarantee that I'll stay for the period I'm signing a lease for, what happens if I rented a flat for a year, and wanted to leave after like 2 or 3 months for any reason?

No problem usually. Most rental contracts require that you give a month's notice.

If you aren't planning on staying too long, you should still say that you're looking to stay for a year at least.

News / Too much history in Poland? [7]

Too much history in Poland?

Not 'too much', but too much that tries to hard to prove points, rather than objectively facing those bits of the past that hurt.

Study / Secondary education in Poland [20]

I quite liked this, that someone (a Mrs Bernadone) sent me. I hope it's just a joke. It's in Polish, but maybe someone would like to translate:

Dostałam to w mailu i bardzo mi się spodobało. W latach 60. byłam olimpijką matematyczną na szczeblu województwa (wrocławskiego) :-)

USA, Canada / PolishAmericanReview's review of current events in America [48]

That site looks stupid and I feel like I'm hurting my eyes from browsing it.

Yes, very much so.

Any website that goes on about "Liberals" and promoting "White Supremacy" is, by nature, trash.

Just nutty stuff from America. Mediawatch's own tinfoil helmet site.

Love / I love a Polish girl, but I don't want her to drink [37]

About the Miracle of making water to wine,
People were drunk because of drinking Their wine.
When people drank the wine of Jesus they woke up and asked him what is that ?

And doubtless enjoyed themselves. Christianity does not forbid alcohol (or pork). No food or drink is forbidden. The book of Acts makes that very explicit.

the wine of Jesus is not made of humans !!!

It was made of grapes, like all wine.

In any case - there is no reason someone should give up something they like just because of their spouse's religion. If she asked you to give up salah, would you?

Love / I love a Polish girl, but I don't want her to drink [37]

The bible forbids drunkenness, it does not forbid alcohol in moderation. Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine, and at his last meal, wine was definitely served.

Love / My Polish wife went out the other night and didnt come home till the next day [22]

she told me she was going her brothers but didn't tell me she wasn't coming home I found out she was out drinking with her brother and his girlfriend in town but never let me know anything and came home the next day and give me silent treatment

So what? She's probably ****** off about something. Treat her like a princess and also don't get stressed if she wants her own life too.

News / Poland's Murky Stream Media - Rydzyk [36]

He also adds that he has no money from it and all the money is spent on the church and religious stuff

He says that - and at the same time refuses all financial transparency.

My hope is always to simply read the truth,

He is not known for being truthful.

Which explains why he's so often seen being driven in a Lexus 400h that costs PLN 300,000+....

And after all, he did lease a Maybach.

Life / Poland - royal baby bonkers? [17]

Remember it's the silly season and we also now have 24 hour news coverage and the internet.

Someone posted a very telling photo on Twitter. A comparison of two pictures taken of the crowds outside St. Mary's, Paddington. One when HRH Prince William was born, one the other day. In the older photo the pavement opposite was crowded with wellwishers, in the newer photo it was crowded with international film crews.
