Travel / Taxi Fare - WAW to Międzylesie [18]

60-80 Zlotys

Remember that the place he's going is several miles into the second zone. This will put the fair up.

Mind you, airport taxis are better than they were. The one I got yesterday was 30zl to Rondo de Gaulle'a (from the ELE stand outside arrivals). I got one a bit later from Volfra (they really are the cheapest, but you always have to order - now they take orders online or by SMS) and it was 32 from Rondo De Gaulle'a to the very furthest bit of Bielany.

Life / Polish natural remedies and homeopathey better than English [84]

You are most definitely a Richard Dawkins advocate.

Your views on homeopathy and religion are carbon copy of RD.

I haven't read any of his stuff, but I do believe there's a role for faith healing, herbs etc. Just a complementary role - modern medicine is there to save and improve lives, not just make money for those who distribute the product.

Life / Polish natural remedies and homeopathey better than English [84]

Less often than you'd think, especially if the remedy has plant extracts

The big problem with homeopathic 'remedies' is that they don't have any extracts at all, plant or otherwise. They're diluted so much that they're just water. Bach flower 'remedies' are another bit of pseudo-science.

If people believe things like homeopathy, bach remedies, hopi candles, reiki etc are good for them - there's no problem in using them. People might feel better after them - and that is always good.

After all, they don't harm anyone just as they don't cure anything. The important thing is that in the case of serious illness they are never, ever, used instead of real medicine prescribed by a qualified doctor.

Life / Polish natural remedies and homeopathey better than English [84]

If the company that supplies homeopathic remedies is reliable and reputable there's no reason why many of the remedies they sell should be any less effective than many of the pharmaceutical ones

Perhaps because it's quackery.

Herbal medicines (St John's Wort is a fair example) have their place, but they are no substitute for real medicine. And homeopathy just doesn't work any better than a placebo.

play it safe and listen to doctors and take the pills that will probably work .

Very sensible.

Another issue is those people who won't have their kids vaccinated and thereby put others at risk.

Work / Average IT salary in Poland [60]

Only a few are. Saudi is mostly empty space and at least half of those living in Saudi aren't Arabs. Not many Saudis or gulf Arabs (Emirati, Qatari, etc) in Poland, but plenty of people from Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt - including in Bydgoszcz.

Love / Are Polish girls better cooks? [45]

There are some very good ready made things now - in warsaw the bigger supermarkets have a good selection. Also, cooking in Poland is especially easy in summer.

Ooooh. Now that's understandable. I live at work alternate months and have every other month free to potter about at home (starts tomorrow, yipee). So plenty of time to cook. I think the way work/life balance has changed has affected people's cooking habits - it must have been very tempting to eat at a works' canteen if you had a long bus journey home and had to make things from scratch after you got back.

Do you know if there are any Arab or Egyptian people living there Bydgoszcz, Poland

There are certainly a few. You may notice a few shops (especially fast food) run by Arab people and there are muslim prayers at this address:

85-141 Bydgoszcz, ul. Emilianowska 5.

And are a right pain to make, too - you have to get the oil to be just hot enough, peel a bunch of spuds, drain the excess oil off of them.

Again, lots of people know how to cook, but can't be bothered to cook on a daily basis because they're tired and / or don't have the time. Heck, I can cook quite well but I actually cook about once a week, otherwise I just throw some stuff together and use convenience foods. Life is too short to spend it in the kitchen.

But such a good way to wind down after a hard day.

I've never seen fresh potatoes being used in fish and chip shops either. They just open a plastic bag of the stuff and throw it in the fryer

That comment smells of the south of England up where I'm from, if a chippie used frozen ones we'd put a brick through their window ;-)

but I wouldn't say this was proof of any special culinary skills,

This much I agree with - but they do taste a thousand times nicer than frozen.

I think the improvement of city kitchens and the availability of exotic ingredients has a lot to do with it. Making your own sushi is apparently quite popular now. I know a few people in PL who pride themselves at their skills in traditional cooking - oddly enough they are all older married men.

Travel / Taxi Fare - WAW to Międzylesie [18]

At the airport, they start the meter when you get in - no waiting. Better to walk outside and use the one at the head of the taxi stand rather than get one from the guys who approach you by the door.

I wouldn't trust any on that list, especially if you're from out of town. I'm a very heavy taxi user and I don't recognise any of those names. BTW, the prices also seem dodgily low. Damel, Bayer and Volfra are cheap, however there are occasionally 'issues' with the first two, and Volfra generally need plenty of notice since they're busy.

One issue that just occured to me is that you'll be travelling to Miedzylesie outside the first taxi zone which can make it much more expensive. From the airport cab rank, it will probably cost around ($32 Canadian), much more after 10pm or on a Sunday. You can however be sure they're insured, sober and probably decent.

A good bet might be a local firm - there's a list of ones from Wawer here: panoramafirm.pl/taxi/mazowieckie,,warszawa,wawer

It was actually agreeing with you, to a point. Not a rant either, and I know you read English very well so it isn't as if you've missed a nuance.

It's still sad though, that for so many people in Poland, chips mean frozen chips. have you seen how many are sold here?

Re. your canteen comments, a friend recently said they fell out of favour because (she was talking about school canteens) the cooks sometimes took the best ingredients home and served the worst. I don't know how true that is however the person who said this is generally very reliable.

You do realise that in the past, like 20-30 years ago and earlier, Polish people used to cook a lot less at home because almost every workplace and school had a cafeteria and people were only too happy to use them?

I once asked someone why chips in Poland invariably mean frozen chips. The lady told me that before 1990 they had to cut potatoes and deep fry them but now they have nice modern frozen food. Sad. A young waitress in a restaurant told me she thought all chips were frozen. Very sad.

History / Poland is a Catholic country [177]

Heck, even New Labour disciples of Tony Blair may have become Catholics in a modern act of disestablishmentarianism as well as to stay "cool like Tony" since Brown lead the party to self-destruction.

Did they? Some sources for this would be interesting.

you find parents 'converting' to Catholicism or simply 'finding' their faith just so their kids can get into such schools.

More lapsed catholics retaining some connection just to get access to the schools. Fortunately 'faith' schools are now obliged by law to take a certain number of kids from outside that sect.

History / Poland is a Catholic country [177]

Some might think a lesbian Negress who rode a Harley would make a 'cool' PM

Is there any reason why such a person would not make an excellent PM?

I never really followed Blair's political activities, but as a church-going family man with a pleasant, upbeat personality, he exuded a very positive overall ambience and was, what Poles would describe as 'sympatyczny'. Of course, not by everybody's standards

I voted for him, however his family is disfunctional and his private life complicated. Interestingly, his policies platform contained much that you criticise on here.

Travel / Taxi Fare - WAW to Międzylesie [18]

Most of those fares seem cheap. It obviously where in Miedzylesie, but 80 to 100 is a fairer guess, especially if you use MPT or ELE (who have an airport franchise).

History / Poland is a Catholic country [177]

Britain's increasing Catholicism

Declining, not increasing.

Polonization over the years

It isn't polonised.

was it Tony Blair who made it fashionable to be RC

He doesn't talk about religion and in any case is unpopular.

Zajebista (better to say zajebisty). Or better not to say it at all, since it's a very vulgar word. Translates as f*cking brilliant'.

News / Demolish Poland's Palace of Culture? [55]

I'm thinking of the area between Marszalkowska and the Palace

Building in front of the main entrance would spoil the vista.

There used to be a market hall and a markpol there - both unfortunately gone. they didn't look anything special but did bring footfall.

The few times year they put a stage up there or throw in some crappy beer gardens hardly justifies it. I

Agreed.

They should expand the summer beer gardens and hold more events there. When Metro Swietokrzyska becomes the main interchange station and Metro Centrum declines in importance, we might see a bit more happening there - I think there are plans to use it a little more.

News / Nationalist-socialists gaining ground in Poland [24]

The general strike (if it happens) will damage their support, particularly among centrists who don't like to see a breakdown in social consensus.

Exacftly - and this is absolutely spot on about the dislike social conservatives have for protestors. By getting into bed with the remnant of Solidarity, clogging up the city centre with all their banners, they are alienating their other constituency. The same goes for the pseudo-patriots that Jaro like s to court.

Unfortunately for him, the uneducated neo-nationalists put everyone off and are great for galvanising opposition to PiS. Still, I suspect we'll see more of them before we see the last of them, especially if the PiSuarzy did get in and unemployment and corruption get even worse than they are now.

It's great, a leafy park onthe north side, lawns on the south and in front of the palace there's quite a bit of space that they use well.

It was useful during Euro 2012 and lends itself well to big events. Nice to have public space in the middle of the city rather than just more offices.

Except that the voters are showing a clear desire to keep the opposition out of power.

And this is the case. The so-called 'opposition' though believe they have a right to rule.

It's simply not going to work - they won't do anything but spend money on job creation schemes.

They didn't before, and don't have any clear proposals now.

Travel / Whats your favourite Polish city and why? [132]

Best city in Poland is Cracor because we have the best parties in the country :) I recomend Base music club in main squere. Lot of fun :)

Do you really mean parties, or do you mean a nightclub with paid admission and drinks that you buy?
