Life / Homosexuality in Polish Culture [231]

If anyone other than kondzior wants/is able to help him make his point

You'll be waiting a long time.

There isn't a point - just someone working through their neurosis.

UK, Ireland / Learning Polish - Polish shops in England? [34]

This is what the OP should look for in their town - there are probably several shops and some will be more friendly than others.

Law / Getting a Visa to Poland, really that hard? [19]

For visas worldwide, age is a big factor in making their decisions. 'Strong ties' by the way, mean kids, a mortgage and a career.

It's a nuisance, but unfortunately that's the way it is.

Maybe your best option would be to go to Poland, rather than her going to the US.

Law / Getting a Visa to Poland, really that hard? [19]

attending university

a bank account with about 3,000 PLN

live with parents

This sounds like somebody really young, i.e. the demographic group most likely to overstay their visa.

It also depends on the country. You say 'congressman' which suggests the US, who do have issues with people arriving on visit visas and not returning. The UK used to allow Polish citizens to visit if they had a letter of invitation from a respectable person. Is it not the same there?

Travel / Airline tickets from LOT... changing flights. [29]

That's true. You always need to call them to cash in a ticket and have a new one issued, assuming it's possible for the ticket type.

When you buy the ticket, you choose either a more expensive flexi one or a cheaper one that you can't easily change.

UK, Ireland / Learning Polish - Polish shops in England? [34]

Or would the Poles running the shop be a little bit reluctant to have an English person learning Polish in their shop?

It's the Parisian waiter syndrome - you may have learnt enough to order, but they are busy and not generally in the mood for it. Is there a Polish Club anywhere near you?

News / Premier says no recession for Poland [148]

Who are those people? There are very few posters on here living in Poland who don't have at least a reasonable command of the Polish language

Some with even an excellent command of Polish.

I'm also not sure why you're abusing ESL teachers when you are a French teacher yourself and therefore could be called an FSL teacher. (Mods, she has posted it in public before - I'll supply a link if you want)

Now the French community in Warsaw is even more Ghettoised than the Brits or Shermans.

Travel / Can anyone help me find the cheapest way to get from Warsaw to Vienna? [13]

I'd like to go now to Vienna, I did checked the prices for air flights and they are way out of my budget (like $1000) per ticket

Try here: momondo.co.uk
Cheapest is $254

Or here: rozklad-pkp.pl
Much cheaper. They don't give prices, but certainly under $100

News / Premier says no recession for Poland [148]

That's maybe true.

Remember that there are people who've assimilated to whatever degree and are as qualified to give a good opinion on Poland as, say, a person born in Poland who's lived in the UK or US for 20 something years speaking about their adopted home.

I was once lucky enough to meet a lady born in the UK who'd lived in Poland since 1947 - much longer than most here who would describe themselves as Poles have lived there!

News / Premier says no recession for Poland [148]

Those foreigners in Poland, 99% either expats or ESL "teachers" first of all because of their limited (if not any) knowledge of the Polish language are very restricted in their socialization.

Quite a generalisation. There are some people who've don't fit either category and have been here for decades, some living out in the sticks often in quite isolated places and some of us, when we're in Poland, speak only Polish because we don't mix with people who can speak English.

Genealogy / Slavs are descendants of Sarmatians? [600]

Old Picts were old Sarmatians, ie old Slavs >>>

Erm, you do realise the Picts were around long before then?

Speaking as someone whose roots are exactly in that region.

Genealogy / Slavs are descendants of Sarmatians? [600]

Not to mention geographical distance between Britain and Caucasus

Britain contained a frontier of the Roman Empire. Their soldiers came from all over and in those days did not usually return home.

Study / AFRICAN STUDENTS INVASION in Krakow [197]

If you want to move foreign people out of Poland, then logically you'll have to move Polish people out of other countries.

Hey, why not go the whole hog and restrict people to their own village?

USA, Canada / Polonia picket BBC office in New York [15]

the BBC is showing that German series

I'm surprised they don't picket the Polish Embassy then, since Polish state TV showed the same series.

Travel / Is Warsaw dangerous nightly ? [14]

I'll check it when I'll arrive, to see if it fits my 'standards' :)

There's a list here. Worth mentioning that "dla mężczyzn" means "for men" and "dla kobiet" means "for women". "Dla kobiet i mężczyzn" is obviously mixed. The "Jadłodajnie" listed here are very low cost or free canteens. The city centre in Warsaw is referred to as "Śródmieście" on these lists.

Good luck!

Travel / Is Warsaw dangerous nightly ? [14]

If anyone has money to pay for a plane ticket to Warsaw, what's the problem to take a hotel room? This beats me.

Indeed.

Some people sleep at the top of stairwells in apartment buildings and there is (or more probably used to be) an internet cafe in Dw. Centralny which was 10 or 15zl for allnight and had cubicles - most if not all the customers were homeless.

There are also a few outside bin stores by apartment buildings - you sometimes see homeless people using them. Plus some people sleep on the night buses - the longer routes are the most popular.

And of course the network of night shelters for the homeless. I wouldn't imagine they're very nice, however they're fairly well spread out through the city - there's a list of them by the back door of the main hall of the railways station.

And Dworzec Centralny has now removed the seats in the main hall, to discourage rough sleepers.

Law / Rada Gminy - idea to stand as a councilor in Poland [7]

I'm not sure if you can stand as an independent, though certain political parties do not have nationality restrictions and any such restriction could be easily challenged although of course that would alienate the part in question. To form your own party would not be easy.

Life / Why Polish people are fat ? [81]

It may be increasing,

I wouldn't trust any 'official' figures about that - there are plenty of very overweight people in PL and it does seem to be increasing as car use and processed foods are on the rise.

Travel / Is Warsaw dangerous nightly ? [14]

I will come in Warsaw soon and I wonder if the city is dangerous nightly.

At night it is safer than most capital cities.

Is there a big risk to sleep on a bench, or to camp in a public park?

Mostly the police (Warsaw is very heavily policed) and other tramps.

If you really must do this, the bushes by the far side of the river are probably your best bet, however they are not the safest place in town.

Travel / Warsaw Chopin Airport Exchange [7]

Airports give really low exchange rates.

Always and everywhere.

Here is a link showing the ones in Warsaw

Most are good, however a rule of thumb is that ones in railway stations, airports and very touristy areas (like the old town in Warsaw) aren't so good to change money. Having said that, there are two in the main railway station (the bit thet goes under the Marriott) that are OK.In Warsaw, the ones in shopping centres also tend to give poor rates for certain currencies.

Language / pronounce "Kocham Cię" [57]

It isn't wrong, but it isn't universal either. It certainly sounds eloquent. Nowadays it depends on the person speaking.
