Language / Polish words that sound funny? [224]

But I can hear the difference between the English and the Polish "No".
They sound completely different to me.The Polish "No" sounds like the French "Non" to me.
But I can't hear the difference between Byc and B1tch!

Life / Any one in need of a bulldog? A dog's life in Poland [39]

Dogs in Poland are a real problem.
People living in high rise flats own huge dogs.
Many, quite violent dogs roaming the streets and dogs barking all night.
Not to mention the dogsh1t all over the place.....Poles need to sort this out.
It is probably my main dislike of Poland.

Language / Polish words that sound funny? [224]

At the risk of "setting the cats amongst the pigeons",I agree with Dirk.
I can't hear any difference between the way my family pronounce the Polish word "Byc" and the English word "B1tch"
The fact that some of you can hear a difference intrigues me.
Is the Polish word pronounced slightly differently in different regions of Poland?
My family came from Eastern and South Eastern Poland and I suspect Dirk's family did too(Deportations to Siberia).
Might this be relevant?
If not, then why can some of you hear a difference that some of us can't?

News / Polonophobia rising in Israel. [144]

My Grandmother died in The camp in Siberia from pneumonia. My Dad lost his mum when he was just 15.
My Dad,Grandad, two aunts and an uncle survived and made the trek to African refugee camps via India.
My uncle lied about his age and joined the Polish army.Did the whole North African thing up to and beyond Monte Cassino.
An older uncle was in The Polish army and fought The Russians. When all was lost he joined The AK but was later betrayed by a Pole and was sent to Siberia too.......as you say,I don't know how they coped, survived and made successful lives for themselves.

My aunt, who was in that Siberian camp, would never say a bad word against Russians. But she hated their rulers.

News / Polonophobia rising in Israel. [144]

Gotta agree with The Wizard up to a point.
Most Ukrainians I've met were Nazi or verging on it,but the rest were Commies.....no time for any of them.

Genealogy / Slavs are descendants of Sarmatians? [600]

I can't fault your Slav history,it ties in with what I've read too.But I'm no expert, maybe a true Slav historian could pick holes in your statements.

Our shared Slav history is important.
I believe that it is important to know where you came from so that you know your identity.
But in the end it is just roots and history. It is not where we are now.
Where we are now is having a shared Slav history, with many cultural similarities, but we now have different influences and interests.
Like ten siblings with the same parents.
They have roots and history that is shared.
But they might not see each other that often because they have different tastes and interests.

No worries Iron.
I read your post late last night and just thought that CPiasta was some sort of typo on your part, but I did wonder why you posted the same message in Polish and English....LOL!

You are obviously much younger than I thought!

UK, Ireland / Former minister admits UK messed up on immigration [78]

You make a good point about immigration from outside of The EU,that is in our control.
But I suspect that most of them have talents we need, doctors, nurses, computer programmers etc.....I employ unskilled workers and all of them have EU passports, even though many of The Portuguese are actually Indian and most of The Italians are from Brazil....these guys know how to work the system.....

Life / How do Polish people see homosexuality? [152]

The problem with the LGBT community is that they like to brag and show off about it.
I think most of us tolerate their behavior but we are not so happy when they loudly proclaim that they are proud of it.
Same with Muslims,Jehovah's Witnesses and a host of others.
If you have weird or unusual beliefs or preferences, keep them to yourself.
We are not interested and do not need to know.

Off-Topic / Usenet - Soc.culture.polish [5]

Over 20 years ago Usenet newsgroups were very popular and this Polish Newsgroup was very popular and very busy.
Is there anyone on here that remembers that group?

Life / How do Polish people see homosexuality? [152]

Roz,

I get your point but I still think the word "Proud" stinks.
"Glad to be Gay"?
I don't know,you are what you are.....

Life / How do Polish people see homosexuality? [152]

How in the Hell is that a comparison?
You are trying to compare someones race or nationality to a sexual preference?
Are you a total idiot??

Life / How do Polish people see homosexuality? [152]

I find myself agreeing with Dirk here.
I really can't see what there is to be proud of about being Gay.
I can't say I'm proud of being Hetero. That's just the way it is.
Why should anyone be "proud" of their sexual inclinations or preferences?

USA, Canada / Would you live in California, USA? [240]

As I've said before.
I wouldn't live in The USA,let alone California.
You Yanks go on about Europe's problems, and you're right,we do have plenty of problems.
But do you seriously believe The States are any better?
I think I prefer it here in The UK right now.
We'll just have to wait and see how it pans out.

USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

I don't think Americans and Canadians hate Poles at all.
Some idiots buy into The dumb Polish jokes just as we in England have the dumb Irish jokes.
I have yet to meet a truly stupid Irish or Polish person.
This is just more s... stiring....

Life / Is time on Poland's side? Unsustainable future. [21]

In the early sixties,my only uncle still living in Poland was allowed to come and visit us in The UK but he had to leave his wife and son behind in Poland to ensure he would return.

USA, Canada / Polish or American Education? [180]

In my experience,at the very high end,American university's are very good.
On a par with the best European universities.
But for education in general,it is very poor in The USA.
Miles behind Europe.
We Europeans are very aware of the lack of education and backwardness of many Americans.
In a nutshell,American education is much more elitist than in Europe.
We do it too
But try to give the masses a half decent education as well.
For whatever reason, many American children are not getting a proper education.

UK, Ireland / No Poles Allowed! - Latest Polonophobic Outrage Out of Britain [660]

I understand what you mean.
They are the same.
Very short hair.
Often football fans.
Enjoy a drink and a fight.
And often praise Hitler.
I knew two Polish guys who had done time in Poland for fighting.
When they said they enjoyed fighting they were smiling.
